Just kind of wanted to get some ideas on good PL to Canon EOS adapters out there. Since people would be mounting the PL lenses on an EOS mount that's on the Epic. There shouldn't be any problems like what the 5D2 had when mounting PL lenses on it. Like hitting the mirror or something like that. Seems like it would be a great way to keep you from having to switch mounts on Epic in the field.

I've got one on the ones from Poland if you want to check it out, I'm in Silverlake. The limit is that it works only with lenses that have thin PL mounts... Most newer Angenieux and the Duclos Tokina 11-16 will work fine.

Why don't you get the CANON mount from RED?

Not sure what you mean.

We're discussing a PL to EOS mount - PL lenses ( like a Duclos Tokina 11-16 or Angenieux Rouge ) on a Canon body - in this case an Epic with a Ti Canon mount from Red.

I guess if changing four bolts is too difficult and you don't mind risking an incorrect flange distance Plus having a relatively loose mount that eliminates the whole purpose of having a titanium mounting surface in the first place, then yeah - this is a GREAT idea!

Well there are some environments where changing from the RED Canon mount to the RED PL mount on the Epic just isn't going to happen. So it would be nice to know the options that are out there to mount PL lenses on the RED Canon mount.

Matt, I might have to check it out once I get my Canon mount for Epic.

Such adapter is not possible because of physical obstructions and back flange distance unless you use an optical relay of some sort, which would degrade image quality in one way or another. This is why there is EOS mount and PL mount. The problem solved. Why would you like to create one?

I thought I was pretty clear on what I wanted to do. I want to mount a PL lens on a Epic that has the Canon (Ti) mount installed on it, using an adapter in stead of changing the mounts on the Epic.

(just incase some of you are a little confused.)

There are several PL to Canon EOS adaptors manufactured, if you want to go that route.

This is one.

However, these days, I would double check the clearance of anything involving adaptors.

This is kind of the reason why I wanted to open a thread up so you can find out which mounts are good and which mounts are bad.

You mentioned a situation where it was impractical to change the mounts ... I'd be interested in hearing more about that circumstance.

Its a very easy and fast swap ... not at all like the PL to Nikon mount swap on Red One.

I'd be content to swap mounts anywhere I was also willing to change lenses.

To answer your actual question ... I have yet to see a PL to EOS adapter I like. I'd really much rather swap the mounts than use an adapter if at all possible.

Nikon to EOS? Sure especially for the Zeiss ZF and the older fully manual lenses. PL to EOS? Screw that.

much of the field shooting I do would qualify as this circumstance. often i barely feel comfortable pulling my Epic out of the bag, let alone changing a lens mount in some far-flung, wind-swept desert or mountain.

I know Stuart at Focus Optic make a nice one.

Please contact me if would like to know more.

Yeah, I get that. But that's also not a situation where I am gonna be happy about a lens change.

Let me say it positively, instead of snarkily: I'm comfortable changing the Epic mounts under any of the same circumstances where I am comfortable changing a lens. If I'm not comfortable changing a lens, well that makes the discussion moot. I'll pack a zoom that day. ;)

Now, I get the impression you guys differ with that point of view ... and I want to know what I haven't thought about.

I imagine there some guys or gals that have a mixed bag of lenses. Maybe they have some in EF and some in PL. Say you have a set of K35s in PL that you love, but you don't have anything wide or telephoto in that set. However, you do have 14mm Canon and a 70-200mm that are perfect for the job. If you are doing a doc or a tv show or whatever you may not have the time to switch out camera mounts every time you wanted to use that 14mm or 70-200mm. In this scenario I think it is perfectly reasonable to want a PL to EF adapter, so you can use the Epic Canon EF mount all day.

Everyone have their own reason for needing a tool.

This is great tool that Stuart has made.

Especially when you have 12 Canon lenses for the day but only one PL lens like the RUBY ;-)?

Yes, that's is why I have mine.

We had one here that worked fine. The problem is although the Flange sensor distance can be accomodated both mounts have the same throat diameter of 52mm ( I think best check, if you want it exact ) so as pointed out earlier in the thread lenses with large rear diameter behind the flange wont fit.

Yup, there some limitations of course.
