  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PL mounts for sale on eBay?

I should update this as I bought one of the mounts... it works well with regular lenses, built well... however, it does NOT work with anamorphic lenses. The pin is off and the lenses mount almost on a 30 degree angle. I went back to the rental house almost mad at them for giving me, what I thought, were bad lenses mounts but I checked them on a RED PL mount and they were perfectly lined up. Back on mine? Off to the side again. If you want anamorphic, this PL mount is useless... I might actually sell mine, if anyone's interested.

The pictures at the bottom of the Ebay page look like the key pin is in the right place - certainly no where close to being 30degrees off!

Hard to see how they could get this wrong. 90degrees I could believe as I suppose the front could be mounted 90degrees rotated with respect to the rear plate by accident.

I think this issue discussed in another thread recently...

Turns out the lens had an adjustment option for the mount which could put them 30 degree out.
Loosening the screws and turning the PL mount back was all that was needed to fix it and get the lens lining up again

That's all fine and good, but Jason is saying that they plugged directly into the official RED PL mount no problem... And presumably others that were there.

In the picture that Kem posted, they do look a little off, but I can't tell if that's because of the camera angle or not (they're different heights and the rotation collar isn't at 90degs on the 3rd party one, so it's hard to tell).

Arrived in the mail today (approx 1.5 weeks from Poland to NYC). Feels much more solid than I anticipated. No camera w/ me at the moment to test, but one funky thing - the cap has rainbow colors on it lol

I bought the dumb PL mount from Poland. The shipping was quick. He was quick to respond to my questions. All around a great deal and transaction. i still don't understand some peoples comments about the warranty. It's a dumb mount and it doesn't come in contact with anything electrical- attached it with the four screws and you are set. BTW, I took a sharpie and "painted" my cap black-no more rainbow colors :)

I've had it for about a month now and I have my Red 18-85 on it without any trouble (see link to photo). BTW, I can't get the insert image to work anymore?? All I get is the small icon below.

I used a Ceirco7 with some Lomo anamorphics last week, and they were definitely off by enough to be noticeable (not by 30deg... Maybe 5deg). I still don't understand how exactly it's possible -- the reason I think it's the mount is because all three -- 35, 50, 75 -- were tilted by pretty much the exact same amount.

To make the conclusion even more wishy-washy, the owner (who wasn't there when I was testing) said that immediately after being serviced last (before the holidays) a renter with an R1 mentioned a similar slant to the left, but no one else since then complained. More anecdotal, but spherical lenses definitely look dead on (the marks *look* level.)

Anyone with one of these mounts and anamorphics come to any conclusions?

Other than that, it's built adequately... I also used a beasty vintage Angenieux 25-250 for about 5mins and it didn't completely blow out or anything, so that's good.

I love this mount

I cannot speak for the Anamorphic lense issues , but here is my experience:

I have used the following lenses on this without ANY issues:

Focus Optics Ruby 14-24
Fujinon 19-90 (Backfocus on Lens Adjusted)
Angenieux Optimo 15-40mm
RED Pro Zoom 17-50
Zeiss UltraPrimes
Zeiss SuperSpeeds
Cooke S4

Hope this helps!

Hmm, Is it confirmed that the pin is off by degree? If so it's not built to the PL standard..The pin should be sitting it very accurately in North East. i'e 1.30 o'clock, 45 deg from straight up... If not I think the polish guys needs to do a recall as if thats not where the pin is sitting it's not really a PL mount.

If it's not 100% accurate, it's very close (too close to tell by eye). But, yes, I'd like confirmation and don't have another set of anamorphics to test with.

As the 4 screw holes are perfectly symmetrical in a square you could just put the mount on a ruler so that it lines up trough two of the holes then the stud should line up as well... if it does then it's right if it's of so you see it by eye.. well then it's bad. It can only be so and so actuate as the stud actually fits a bit lose in the slot of the lens mount. (a bad design that goes with all PL mounts if you ask me).

Yeah. It seems to be fine. Look at Kem's picture I re-posted on Page 9... it looks pretty dang close (actually the RED TI looks off because of the angle of view).

Was think of buying a PL off ebay at one point because of the price but I'm sure this will be awesome when released. Great price too.

Ha. Reduser won't let me link to Wooden_Camera.

Anyways, Wooden_Camera has a new PL mount for the Red on their site. I'd much rather go through them than ebay, and it only runs for $400!

wow - thanks for sharing this information! WC makes nice hardware.

In the US you can't void your warranty for unrelated problems. So if you somehow manage to short out the data pins RED can refuse warranty service. If your monitor stops working they can't legally void the warranty. To employ a car analogy, Toyota can't void your warranty on the drivetrain if you tint your windows.

True, and people should remember that the original bugaboo about lens mounts voiding your warranty - that created so much distress in the first couple years - wasn't so much about voiding your warranty but that it it also voided your option to trade in your Redone for the Epic.
