  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Seems to be, Jarred has just said in another thread that 6K Weapon comes first, and then the bigger one... He just mentioned that Vista Vision is not the official name... hence "bigger one"

Here is a target: 5D 22 Megapixels. My money is on Kemalettin.

thanks Joan

I think the Vista Vision is approx two Dragon sensors stacked vertically. So not new sensor "tech", just more Dragon pixels to cover Full Frame/VV/4:3.

It can't be... The Dragon sensor isn't wide enough for Vistavision or FF coverage so that wouldn't make sense. Plus that would make it a 37+ MP sensor at 12k or so in resolution and double the physical size (6144x6200 Approx). So I don't believe it's two sensors stacked, more likely a larger cut out of the sensor wafer.

Why would they do this when larger single sensors have always been on the drawing board?

What if its the arri solution and they just turn the sensors and put two or three of them there? anyway very stoked out on all this news, the real question is do i invest in full frame or medium format glass? you know, given the former road map...

For starters Matt, I think your math is off - putting 2 Dragons vertical and side by side would create a roughly 6K by 6K square-ish target.

In any case, assuming the manufacturing process follows "typical" methodology, (and assuming RED is happy with the per photo site metrics on Dragon) changing the wafer cutting pattern is the likely choice. FWIW, one of the typical impediments to developing larger sensors - especially high performance designs - is getting a decent yield of chips with 100% good pixels.

the active film area of VV is 36 wide but not 24 high - IIRC it is 18 high, so it does not match still FF 35... (please correct this if wrong)

VistaVision is slightly larger than FF35..

You're right, bad math, but the point is still valid that this is still not even close to Full Frame or VistaVision in size. Close in heaight yes, but still short of the width end. Like you say a larger cut of the wafer is far more likely.

You're thinking in terms of film though.. This is Digital so slightly different.

why would it be ?

digital sensors match the physical dimensions of film formats so that FOV/crop factor etc remains the same with given lenses... there is no difference. it's simply the physical size of the active recording area.

5D is digital FF35 sensor in exact same dimensions as the still film format: 36mmx24mm.

if active area of VV is 36 wide then u can use the format with all FF lenses, otherwise (if larger) u would need to get medium format glass to fully cover...

Is there no unrecorded look around on Dragon @6k? I presume not based upon what folks are saying, but I thought I would ask.

My hats off to Jarred and Red, giving us little peeks at what is coming. It's so much more interesting then waiting for a big announcement at NAB. This group loves to speculate, and it's great seeing what theories people come up.

I have to imagine that RED's Vista Vision format is basically Full Frame. It's soooo close already. Medium Format glass is really for 65mm, which is another lager format alltogether.
