  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

I believe Jarred has posted a video where the heat will be dissipating from... the mount!

Careful bob, someone is likely to start a thread on the optical effects of sensor heat dispersion through cinema glass and the effects on the coatings, focus and iris mechanisms, T-Stop , lens distortion and skintones in high altitude or in an underwater housing. They might go on to explain what effect the heat transfer has while passing through the OLPF and the particular effects on IR pollution. HAHAHAHA, I KID!!!

CANNED HEAT FUTURE BLUES LYRICS

Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Seem like every minute lord is sure gonna be my last,
Gonna who do ya baby, got you on my mind,
Who do ya baby, got you on my mind,
Wait a few months darlin' it will drive you right outta your mind,
'Cause your a crazy little mama and you know you can't be beat,
I got somethin' for ya baby that is awful sweet,
Come on little mama gonna knock ya right off your feet.

[Music]

See that picture baby hangin' up on your mama's shelf,
See that picture baby hangin' up on your mama's shelf,
I'm gettin' tired, tired, tired lord of sleepin' all by myself,
Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Who'll tell your future, I can't tell my past,
Seem like every minute lord is sure gonna be my last,
Tho the past was sour lord the future can be mighty sweet,
We finally found a home and our love just can't be beat,
You know it's forever and I'm never never gonna leave.

I think the MiniMags is due to smaller camera size and wanting to cut size/weight wherever possible. Also doesn't hurt their sales as now everyone will need to buy Minimags.

1.8" REDMAGs were limited to SATA 3Gbps data rates. Only the 512GB and newer 240GB are truly acceptable for Dragon, IMO. Weapon is capable of more data and RED has set the MiniMags as the base media spec. MiniMags, in their current form, are based on a 6Gbps SATA interface and presumably can be scaled to 12G and 18G.

The 65 rents for 10k a day ready to shoot...Very unaffordable for non block busters

Arri's own anti-obsolescence stance might have prevented them from introducing a higher resolution or quality sensor in their existing camera line up - as it would likely devalue their existing assets, and create a workflow headache studios wouldn't thank them for.

Arri introducing a 6k workflow in a new 65mm model would give those wishing to be on the (Arri) bleeding edge - access to it, field test the studios process around it, that would need to push 4x more data ... and when there is enough of an 'acceptance' of this - introduce a 6k sensor to replace their 35mm cameras that (speculative) might even have a backward compatible 3k output (for clients who are keen on 1080p masters).

Either way - I think some studios are going to have to tool up for 6k ARRIRAW.
I wonder how studios will regard the 6K .R3D workflow at that point?

Will Arri renters be thinking "Do I want to pay more for 6k?" ... or will they be 65mm centric?

Sounds like whatever happens will be good for RED, as however Arri promote it this time ... they are going to struggle to put RED down ...

Arri 65 :
If studios & VFX have to start processing 6k Arriraw for blockbusters ... they may be pushed into upgrading the number crunching & bandwidth side to more easily handle hi-res (ie RED) footage?
When the big-budget directors / DPs start mastering in 4k ... they may discover an 'emotionally richness' lacking from an uprezzed 3.4k image .. and seek out what the 6K Red sensor can do?

As Canon (or Sony?) have $$$ R&D ... maybe Red will see the technological competition from Japan-way @ NAB?

Hmmm… could a mechanical disc shutter conceivably be used as a fan? Maybe if there was a little lip on it to push air through?

Haha, wouldn't work at all*, but I love the out of the box thinking and image. :D

*No air intake on a lens.
*Would blow dust right onto your sensor.
*Would restrict wide shutter options.

On the plus side, it should be well sound isolated inside the body.

The lens gearing could be seen as little heat sink fins. :)

"Spent the morning getting into all sorts of trouble with our good friend Bill Paxton. Sorry you couldnt make it Shane!" - Jarred

When looking for information about Weapon it's best to get close to the fire.

RED is the fire. Jarred also happens to be the Fire Chief.

Seems that there are no ports on the camera body at all... At least on the back, or maybe there is some kind of cover for them

Hopefully that won't add EXTRA COST.

Total speculation: No current module will work with the new camera. New Modules will add all the pro connections. Red will open to third parties for said module connections.

The last one I would feel very happy about, but not nearly as happy as a non-proprietary media solution.

It's nice to have fun with a wacky idea every once in awhile ;-)

Or extra bulk. I guess standard battery plates that use lemo cables to power the camera will get obsolete then. Or will require a module which makes a camera bigger

PLEASE TELL ME I'M CORRECT:That picture is infact an iPad running a new version of the Redlink app. i.e we're seeing a streaming video feed directly from the Weapon.

Don't think the feed is from Weapon. Also, don't think that's an iPad.

It seems negligible as the camera will be 1/2" shorter and the "legacy" module with the standard ports is only 3/8" thick. Also there is no silly adapter module anymore. The camera overall will be smaller.

My guess is that this is a long awaited reincarnation of the Redmote Pro concept. Wireless feed+focus control.

It's Minion. Some kind of wireless monitor/focus system from RED?

Gavin has a thread open - it's something that he's working on, and would seem to be independent of RED.
