  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

I really think that it's

a minor bump in frame size (going from R1MX to EPIC went from 4.5K to 5K max).

If I'm right, the R1MX sensor was partially used. Epic used the full sensor.
With Dragon, sensor is 6144x0,005=30,7mm, meaning the sensor is already totally used.

True...but they could just expand the Dragon "canvas" and make it Full Frame 8K.

Meaning...you can still shoot 6K as you can now....it would identical to current 6K Epic dragon...but if you want to shoot Full Frame and 8K...that would be an option too....only on Weapon.

Same Dragon Sensor. Just more of it.

My guess is this is why Weapon can only shoot MiniMags. There's more data.

OH. And more FPS at current Epic frame rates. I'm guessing everything gets a bump. So 120fps at 6K. 200 fps 5K. 300 fps 4K.

I have not heard it referred to as Weapon Dragon yet. Just weapon. Not epic, no reference to the dragon sensor. So who knows, except RED and a few others.

I'm not to worried, I am pretty sure it will be good. RED has been delivering and progressing since their inception mostly always a bit more than incremental.

We need a judge's ruling. Did Jarred state it was a Dragon sensor or did we infer that?

I CRS.

I don't think it matters. I just think it will be better. When RED have something exciting and they want us to pay attention, it's always been worth us paying attention.

People le have said, "they're all hype", and they've been masters of generating hype while putting the money other companies put into advertising budgets inside our cameras instead. :)

ive come to love these rollouts for this very reason.

I think for sure there will be a 65mm medium format sensor announced at the same time as weapon, as yet another upgrade option along with the body upgrade... Would be huge to have a 65mm camera like Weapon that is light and small enough for gimbals, octocopters, and tight spaces. Look out industry if that is the case...

Carbon Weapon will be the bees knees. I'm hoping the non-carbon is still super bad ass, because that's all I'll be able to afford I'm sure ;)

Jarred said their upgrade cycle was: Body (REDOne), Sensor (MX), Body (DSMC), Sensor (Dragon), Body (Weapon) for their schedule. Which seemed to suggest that this is "just" a body upgrade. But REDOne MX -> Epic MX wasn't without feature upgrades as well. After all we got highspeed, better REDCode, faster boots, smaller form factor etc out of Epic.

Just got off my 3rd Amira gig in a row all from different venders two being owner ops.

The DP on this gig was German and has a buddy who works for Arri.

Rumors are out of an Alexa XXT 6K S35 camera.

This NAB is gonna be interesting.

Arri is bringing the heat lets see how Red plays the court.

How big will the .ari RAW files be and what FPS will it Max out at? Who knows...

If it wasn't for Red the digital revolution we live in today would not be present.

Red goes for RAW and the Owner OPs which I love.

Lets just hope Weapon packs a solid punch at an affordable price and a new 8K FF Sensor in the near near future to keep the revolution alive.

I have no doubt it will be better... More than "just" a body change; a new form factor. New boards with faster, more efficient processing and more data throughput could enable the system to take better advantage of all the current sensor has to offer, when compared to that which the current system is capable. That could certainly mean much more than boosts in frame rates. I expect nothing less. :-)

When Jarred mentioned a while back that Red Engineers had a breakthrough I was thinking about heat. Heat really is a big deal, and it is more important than fan noise and any complaints that come with it. Heat increases resistance, slowing current and therefore reducing processing speeds. This would limit how much data the system can take off of the sensor.

Heat sets off a viscous cycle with a snowball effect. Increased heat means increased resistance which in itself creates still more heat but I think it also necessitates increases in amperage which also result in more heat. I'm not an Electrical Engineer but this is my rudimentary understanding. Please correct me if I am wrong.

More efficient processors draw less power producing less heat and enabling faster speeds as do other improvements in the management of heat.

It is possible that when Dragon was released, the body became the bottleneck and heat was the lynchpin. What we have seen of Weapon shows no fans. My understanding and my conclusions are simplistic but as plausible as any; Red has conquered the heat problem.

Phil I saw that graphic at Best Buy too! ....... Ha ha... Kidding.

Ha, awesome.

I believe Jarred has posted a video where the heat will be dissipating from... the mount!

Oh man, you're on fire tonight, Bob! (pun intended)

How hilarious would it be if there's an Alexa Mini in that "Top Secret" DSMC case? (Or am I the only one with that sense of humour?)

I think we are talking upgrades here, not downgrades. :) hahaha

Careful bob, someone is likely to start a thread on the optical effects of sensor heat dispersion through cinema glass and the effects on the coatings, focus and iris mechanisms, T-Stop , lens distortion and skintones in high altitude or in an underwater housing. They might go on to explain what effect the heat transfer has while passing through the OLPF and the particular effects on IR pollution. HAHAHAHA, I KID!!!

:)

Arri's own anti-obsolescence stance might have prevented them from introducing a higher resolution or quality sensor in their existing camera line up - as it would likely devalue their existing assets, and create a workflow headache studios wouldn't thank them for.

Arri introducing a 6k workflow in a new 65mm model would give those wishing to be on the (Arri) bleeding edge - access to it, field test the studios process around it, that would need to push 4x more data ... and when there is enough of an 'acceptance' of this - introduce a 6k sensor to replace their 35mm cameras that (speculative) might even have a backward compatible 3k output (for clients who are keen on 1080p masters).

Either way - I think some studios are going to have to tool up for 6k ARRIRAW.
I wonder how studios will regard the 6K .R3D workflow at that point?

Will Arri renters be thinking "Do I want to pay more for 6k?" ... or will they be 65mm centric?

Sounds like whatever happens will be good for RED, as however Arri promote it this time ... they are going to struggle to put RED down ...
