  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Actually, looking at it again, it's probbaly just an old prototype PL that was lying around that Jarred felt like blowing up after reading how far this thread had strayed off topic. :)

Probably right, but a 65mm combined 35mm camera would really shake the market.

Don't think I got an answer to my question when I asked if it's possible to do a camera with a 65mm AND a 35mm mode.
If you could have a 8-12K sensor at 65mm and then crop to get 6K 35mm you should technically be able to change the mount to either do 65mm or 35mm footage.

Please tell me I got this right! (free Red Weapon upgrade for me!! :w00t: )

I think you're in
right direction, or something similar.
Still little to nab;)

Personally I think the 65mm sensor thing is a new camera and it will be much bigger than 65mm.

I really think that it's

a new smaller body design
better processing (new internal boards that allow for more onboard processing) like the extra EVF/LCK output already announced.
a minor bump in frame size (going from R1MX to EPIC went from 4.5K to 5K max.
New, excellent well thought out modules
A new dumb side that morps a REDMote and a SWITCHBLADE into one module.
optical viewfinder option with motion mount (or some combination of that. (in fact that is what I think the space is for on the PL Jarred is burning)
Mini Mag speed bumps.

That's what I think I have been able to figure out based on what has been posted here and there.

....

David, that would be brilliant! Never was a friend of EVF. But I don't think that will ever happen. But then, never say never.

Im generally hopelessly out to lunch on these things. Dragon with STH is just about heaven for me, even without minimags, etc. But I know I will be hitting refresh on the store to get timestamped, just because I have yet to be disappointed. :)

An optical viewfinder would require a mirror and some mechanical parts in front of the sensor. I suspect a lot more is being made out of the burning mount than is warranted, to me it's nothing more than good fun with burning magnesium with standard PL mount. A mirror assembly would take up more space than that. A static mirror would cut down the light reaching the sensor significantly and get dirty, a mechanical one would need a small motor that synchs to the LCD in the motion mount, or something of that sort. No thanks. There are other things to invest R&D in that are more critical.

I had to try a bunch, but at this point I think we have passable EVF options from a couple of vendors. I think the optical viewfinder on the Hassies and other still cameras is absolutely critical for fashion, current EVFs are nowhere near good enough for that, but for moving image there are decent solutions that fit the needs.

If Shane's reveal tomorrow isn't about Weapon he's going to have a bunch of pissed off subscribers. I signed up just for this "reveal" and it would be incredibly misleading if it had nothing to do with Weapon. Judging by the screen in the background and the Officer delivering a top secret package, it has to be weapon or Shane is the ultimate troll.

Good eye Phil. Must be Weapon then.

As a career operator I have found that no matter which camera body it is, the EVF and the lens/lens control are the key user interfaces. If RED, or a 3rd party, managed to develop a UHD EVF with good micro contrast it would make CamOps VERY happy. I wonder if the new EVF/LCD connection standard for Weapon is capable of carrying a UHD/4K signal?

Cheers - #19

The apparent size of Weapon and the enlistment of Shane signals an aggressive move by Red to compete more directly for Video DSLR shooters and/or those types of applications.

I think we we already know it won't be competing in terms of price. :-)

I primarily signed up for his filmmaking insights, particularly on lighting. Most resources on the web don't cover cinematic lighting nearly as in-depth as he does.

Considering how his name would be mud if he didn't have something Weapon related at this point and a full Weapon reveal would seem to negate RED's pre-NAB double-discount deal (not to mention piss off RED owners who didn't subscribe to the Inner Circle), I'm guessing:

1) Footage from Weapon without revealing the camera or specs (+ his Epic Dragon tests)

2) Footage from Weapon with a full camera reveal but without specs (+ his Epic Dragon tests). This would probably mean RED would also show a full camera reveal without specs.

3) His Epic Dragon tests with a mention that Weapon houses the same sensor, so it should look just as awesome. Granted, this would be the lamest route, given his teasers.
