  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I could be wrong, but I believe the Arri announcement was AFTER the Weapon announcement. Also, I feel that the Arri Mini is a reaction to the Epic body type as well as further fueled by the stabilizer rig movement.

For history's sake. Jarred and Red "teased" Weapon prior to the Alexa Mini press release and information. And boy did that make everybody super curious.

However, Jarred and Red "announced" Weapon right afterwards, no specifications as of yet.

Does this mean anything? Probably not. Though it's interesting that Arri didn't wait until NAB to make the announcement and release the specifications of the Mini.

I don't think there's a real reason for Red to spill the beans prior to NAB however.

And for those of us who will be attending NAB who have seen Weapon and especially to those who have not seen Weapon thus far it's going to be a hell of a week.

I hope they spill the beans just before nab. Would be good to know what weapon is before I upgrade to dragon. Im happy with the Epic but if weapon has some killer features I like to upgrade too dragon before NAB. Im sure it will be nothing short of amazing but feels unnecessary that we have to do a "leap of faith" for one day (consider you upgrade to dragon the day before NAB and next day you read the announcement).

I certainly won't be telling anybody what to do, but the clear thing is if you want to upgrade to Dragon at the early adopter price at this point doing it without fully knowing what Weapon is would be the current only option before NAB. Really at that point you are actually making the decision to remain within the upgrade ecosystem at that point as there's no path from Mysterium-X to Weapon. Weapon is a Dragon upgrade and personally I'd do what it takes to get there. You'll have a couple months post NAB, but at that point it sounds like the Dragon upgrade from Mysterium-X goes up and eventually ends. I'm also expected a fair bit of queuing for Weapon during NAB once the pre-order gates open.

I'm fairly invested in Red cameras as a system and Dragon is my preferred camera to shoot on. I make a living shooting on Red primarily. I also like the upgrade path as it presents a very reasonable option to stay in the realm of "state of the art". So my decision is rather easy.
 
Never forget folks, it costs money to stay on the bleeding edge of technology. Cameras of any kind carry a depreciation value, regardless of what you paid for it. If you've been doing this long enough you know this already and accept it and budget for it annually. RED's upgrade programs are an exception to this inherent fact in a fast paced market. The fact that your multi-year-old camera can be brought up to state of the art for a fee is a favour by the visionaries at RED. Never forget what the alternatives are.

To those who struggle with this, just try the alternatives. Please don't make senseless remarks here criticizing the process that exists to help you. Dumb ass remarks have driven the RED founder away from forums like these and I would hate to see that become a trend. Just try getting a response from the leader of any other of today's major camera companies on a public forum, FB page or via email. At best you will be bounced to a faceless 1-800 number or email support.

RED stands for more than a camera company. It is a concept which has revolutionized the way we think about image acquisition, not just with RED products but also with their support and customer relations. We are all very fortunate and should act as such.

Imagine if you could upgrade your truck every year or few years for a fraction of the cost of a new one, would you bitch then?
Is there any other product in your life which can be up to 7 years old that still offers you discounted upgrades to enable you to make a living?
Likely not!

Anyone who didn't expect a significant upgrade from Red at NAB this year isn't paying attention to what's going on in the world of camera technology.

What's unique about Red is that the upgraded camera comes with an upgrade path for current users.

I had made my plans to NAB 2015 after I heard of WEAPON...and I know I wont be dissapointed....

If I know someone who's going to NAB but not looking to get a weapon upgrade, does anyone think I can have them reserve one in my name? I'd love to fly out and get some early Weapon lovin' but I'm currently booked solid well into May

All orders will most likely be online. There is no advantage to being at NAB except seeing WPN in person.

Oh ok! For some reason I thought NAB attendees could book their reservation early. Fingers are crossed for a quick upgrade process. It took almost 2 years from the time I reserved to the time my Dragon to when it arrived (last December). Really don't want a repeat of that
 
Does anyone know if there is truth to the rumor that Arri is offering a full value trade in on the Arri Alexa M to the mini?
And if not what does everyone do with their Arri Alexa M's?

I heard that ARRI is offering two Mini's for every Alexa M; plus a pony and a picture of a rainbow. Meanwhile every Epic / Scarlet (MX & Dragon) gets shut off by a central command switch at RED HQ on the day N.A.B opens; rendering them useless unless you immediately upgrade to WPN.

Or maybe I've just spent too much time here on REDUser reading the mass hysteria and misinformation....

Hi
I think first day of NAB exhibits ie 13th will
be for Carbon Dragon and Dragon M users
From 2nd day onwards it will be for all Dragon
users.
This happened during Epic to Dragon upgrades.
Do anyone has any news in this???
