  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Phil --

This is half jokingly, but if you can point to a single post in which you are a HARSH CRITIC towards RED, I will buy you a cappuccino.
Just a single post that meets this definition :-)

This is all serious, Phil is a good man whom spends an abundance of free time delivering helpful test results to help our decision-making. I for one appreciate informative Stickies and extra 'homework' he does for RED User community.

Not being a fan boy, just telling the truth.

Phil - Now that you've seen / touched the Weapon; perhaps you could clear up a few dilemmas for me.

Before a day of shooting with this new camera do you think I should choose the Corn Flakes or the oatmeal from the craft truck? Also when Crafty comes around with the first substantial should I choose the meat or the veg option.

So many things weigh heavy on my mind.

Is M3 a Cinetape mounting point... on the imaging plane?

Phil is out...

Guess he had that visit at RSH

Can you just show a picture of the whole "Weapon"

Can you just show a picture of the whole "Weapon"

Can you please just post a complete picture of the "Weapon"? Id like to know what I am buying before I buy it.

Thanks,

Stephen

Will weapon have integrated FIZ / wireless control / run stop? After struggling with crappy redmotes for years this would be nice too

But you will see it before you buy it, I'm sure you'll also see all the specs and footage before you can buy it.

Am I missing something? Why does everyone think that they are being forced into buying a pig in poke?

Much of this happens through emails to Red asking for feature requests in the camera, the firmware, RCX, AKS, etc.....

A few of the firmware related things I can think of?

- Single touch on the LCD Touch access to "one menu" for audio. It used to be two separate menus and if audio was not enabled you had to "go the long way". This has changed.
- Toggling of visibility between HDRx tracks to help with exposure. Previously you were "using the force", but you can now see the highlight track use the exposure tools.
- Displaying of recording time in minutes rather than percentage. This was something I wanted for a long time.
- Multiple Black Shade "banks". This was something many asked for I'm sure, and it's one of the very good things about Dragon IMO.

There's a few other things as well.

However, and I stress this, Red has listened to every request/idea and most of the time has come up with solution that has ended up in firmware, a new versions, and what not.

This is yet another reason why I shoot with their cameras. The fact that a camera company listens to these requests and implements a solution in free firmware updates is tremendous.

A few of the firmware updates have felt "like a new camera" along the way if you can remember those.

There's a lot of hard working unsung heroes at Red working around the clock to implement and design new things. Their passion is helping push these cameras way past a lot of the competition in my mind. If you look at just the simple menu implementation and the type of tools you have access to and compare it against the other digital cinema cameras it's pretty clear that we are using something from the future in comparison.

Cheers for that sir.

lol. Oddly I'm mostly a nibbler in the mornings, so I can't help you there. Meat option works best for me. Protein man. You need it for the hours and type of physical work on a standard production day.

Ha - it was veiled attempt to get your impressions... without getting your impressions. If you know what I mean.

My Theory based on the fact that I was toying with the idea a few months ago and that usually means someone is about to release it...

HD-SDI and power via NATO rail. No cables, just pick up all of the data through 'exposed' gold plating. Run two strips on either side of the NATO rail. Then make an isreali arm which runs 4 cables along it. Then you've got a quick release tool less design and cableless.

In this instance you wouldn't be able to transmit touch data through the 4 cables without an absurd number of gold strips so they'll probably have a tiny short range Bluetooth transmitter in the monitor for the touch data hence the wireless receiver on the side (for redlink too).

That would explain why there needs to be a legacy lemo solution and how it could be both wireless and wired simultaneously. Wireless control, wired video.

MY WISH: LCD WITH MIRROR AND FLIP/FLOP options !!

New showreel on www.camlight.nl (all RED)

Best

Ports look like....

Audio (2-Mini XLR)

Sync

Control

HDMI

HD-SDI

I/O Power

I hope we dont have to use a Octopus Cable for Trigger, Timecode, Genlock.

I love that the new Element Technica Breakout uses 5-Pin Lemo for Timecode much like the Alexa.

Will we get 4K output in the HD-SDI 6Gbs or 12Gbs connection.

If we can run a V-LOCK/Anton Battery in the back while plugged into a giant Block via Power I/O like the Alexa I will be very happy! No more lost takes cause of dead battery.

A few wishes I have for WEAPON:
- That it can hold timecode accurately. So we don't need to use Lockit boxes to each camera.
- That sound is a bit more powerful. 96kHz instead of 48 would be great and hopefully a bit better preamps. The reason why sound is useful is just to reduce the amount of equipment needed for simpler documentary shooting. Also some way of easily changing the input volume, ideally a knob.
- Higher frame rates. For example frame rate bursts would be incredible. I use the slow motion so often, but I often have to go down to 3k or 2k resolution which always pains me a bit.
- Easier to have it on shoulder. I just never found the perfect way to hold the camera. Its really front heavy with the Clutch so I often just skip it and hold it on my shoulder or cheats for docy work.

Exciting times!

TC is expensive and will drive up the cost of Weapon

You have to basically install the lock-it box inside the camera. Thats a whole extra department of people you have to hire along with R&D.

The Alexa does hold Timecode but will eventually slip so it's still needed; even after lunch you should always Jam. The Alexa holds it good enough for several hours that you don't have to ride it which 1st AC love along with OP's doing HandHeld. When I do Alexa gigs and we don't ride with one I'm always on my 2nd making sure it matches or taking the time to Jam it.

I agree TC should be in every camera but so should wireless transmitters etc.

With time it will come but not at the moment would be my guess best guess.
