  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Thanks for support. Let me amplify what I mean with two contrary examples:

Good example. REDlink. That was done absolutely right. Interface module, well-documented protocol, SDK. All kinds of good things are flowing from that; you can have any kind of control interface you desire, from smartphone app to long-range wired ethernet or RS232 control to a steampunk-style brass box. REDlink should be built-in to Weapon brain. But, so should a direct hardware equivalent for REDmote, Side Handle and Switchblade alternatives.

Bad example. Recording media. Early on, RED put in speed bumps to make it hard to use alternative recording media; firmware that refused to use unapproved CF cards and disks, undocumented external drive interface on R1 etc. And we all know why that was done, and it had good arguments in its favour; RED had to establish credibility and reliability, and didn't want to take the hit for third-party recording device FUBARs. But that is totally no longer the case; RED have enormous credibility, and everyone knows RED media is as bombproof as it gets. Any future recording FUBARS will result in 'ya shoulda used RED' rather than 'what do you expect with a RED camera'. Weapon should have an eSATA or, better, Thunderbolt port for external full raw recording. Direct to tethered RAID, cut out the SSD middle man, for those who want or need that. If people use that and it falls over, they won't blame RED any more; that won't be credible even to skeptics. This isn't 2009 any more.

Mike

In defense fo Red there is a very, very good reason for this. It would be terrible for ll concerned if some rental houses were allowed to use Sunshine Good Fortune Brand media bought off ebay - a lot of potential for lost clips and damage to red's reputation - not to mention the career of the poor sucker who would end up renting this camera. More than one (until I switched to only renting from Cinepool) i have been given Kinos with non-Kino bulbs, and discovered some nasty green spikes. that's a very small thing compared to loosing clips altogether.

I'm afraid we won't be able to use some of the modules with this. I get the change to mini-mags, but what about the side handle, the +1 adaptor module, the quickplate module and the fan 2.0 upgrade?
Will there be some cashback for them when upgrading or are they worthless after the upgrade? I invested in all these last year and just the +1 adaptor module is $1250 alone.

I'm excited with what Weapon will bring, but I'm also afraid that many of the investments I needed to do with my Epic MX will be rendered obsolete now.

Yeah me too, just bought everything over xmas, I have a V-plate, adapter plate and side handle. If I have to lose these (and they will be very difficult to resell with damn near every Dragon ownder doing the same) that's £1500 I'm losing to say nothing of the quickplate kit (although i can't see why that would have to be changed). Not a big deal if you've had it for a year or more but when you've JUST bought it, it's a bit of a kick in the nuts.

I think it's a dead cert all existing DSMC modules won't work with this otherwise why do a new RedVolt XL Module? And so far all pics show a missing side handle.
If I had to guess I think this new body will probably have two ports this time around, one for EVF and LCD.

i really hope there is more than 1 HD-SDI output...:S Hearing Jarreds comment and looking at the picture doesn't look like this. Heck even the FS-7 has 2 outputs. Now red is upgrading the body i really hope they include at least 2 SDI ports which can be controlled independent, this is something about every camera has that is released now, would be a real pitty to have to put a module on to have that...

If thats the "legacy" side module, Im assuming there's also a "new/standard" side module with possibly all new layout...

I almost bought a +1 module last week!

Got to wait now for more info. If some module are obsolete it would be good to know what works and doesn't soon to help guide current module purchasing.

Arri kept things professional with their recent PR. Simple and informative.

Hopefully red decides to let the cat out of the bag. Just now the cat is suffocating and indulging in self harm.

Why is adding them via module "a pity"? I would call that kind of option a godsend.

It is problematic to design a smaller, lighter and thinner camera while adding all kinds of ports, so they design that smaller camera with modular options. If you need the ports, add them. That is great! Don't you agree?

You can actually have the best of both worlds... Or many worlds. Build out the camera you want or need as the situation dictates. That is the beauty of the modular system, no? You just have to remember to do the module math before you get set on a price. Isn't that the only real down side?

One thing I often wished for was some sort of online camera build tool, or a collection of build templates to help configure the thing. The number of options can be overwhelming at times with all of the third party bits out there.

Jim or Jarred said in the "olden days" that mini XLR was the worst mistake they ever made.
Along came the 1/8 :)

If they are getting back to mini XLRs they know what they are getting into.
And I'm pretty sure, full sized XLR will be available for those that want it. modular!

I for one love the decision to move the ports to where they are and to change the 1/8 to small mics as a basic always in, and in their most basic I/O have mini XLR or whatever at least no 1/8

(That said 1/8 with screw lock are kinda ok - at least better than the standards)

Not a problem with Mini xlr's... it was those damn type Mini BNC's we put on Red One. Those things we were told were going to take over the world but I think only AJA and us fell for it.... but on the bright side it gave birth to Element Technica who made the nice little box to fix them.

Yeah,

RED give birth to LOTS of companies... Love ET's products!

Unfortunately that is not the reality we live in. If something goes wrong with a recording, Producers / Directors / People that bought the "3rd party" media that don't want to get in trouble will blame the camera FIRST. We have seen this a thousand times before with random 3rd party gear. It is one of the reasons I detest the cheap D-taps so much... you know, the ones that you can plug in backwards and blow shit up with. I can't tell you how many times over the years D-tap was inserted backwards and it blew something up and we received angry calls from whoever telling us we need to replace their monitors etc.

So yeah.. we take media very very seriously. One bad write could literally ruin a literal million dollar shot or at least one that felt like a million dollar shot. It's just not worth the risk.

Regardless... I know the whole Big Mag to Mini Mag is a jump some people are having problems with even though I have been warning about it for a year. To make things easier, we are working out a special deal for those that have REDMAGS already and need to switch to MINIMAGS. It is not a trade-in thing, but more of a one time discount when you jump over to make things a little less painful... based on the number of the big cards you have. So if you have 6 big cards, you can buy up to 6 minimags at a reduced price, only at the time you switch over. Fair?

We are not trying to screw you guys here.. With technology some things just can't live forever.

Dude I can't believe this...the original SSD mag's we bought with our Epic M's were way up there in price, but like some others we've not had a single fail (knock on wood). But we have been waiting to do the trade up, and very happy to see this. Jarred, you're a prince!

Whenever we talk about recording media we always look for the politically correct solution. What's wrong with saying RED is in business to make great cameras AND money. Recording media is one of those revenue streams they rely on since so many other parts of the camera can be made by 3rd party companies. They want to make money and this is a good place to make it. Wanna use RED? Then you'll use their media.

Or you can go to another company and use any media you want.. You'll have to buy a whole new camera every few years, but hey.. The media will be cheap! :)

it is not called the legacy module but yes, you would be correct.

Jarred-

Did you guys work your magic on power consumption for Weapon? I imagine it's more efficient?
Also, is there a future for the Redvolts?

Great idea!! I would love to see this. Kind of like a puzzle game; you could experiment quickly with all sorts of set-ups while you are looking for the best way to solve a particular need.

Definitely hope for...
• a cooler camera (temp wise)
• less power consumption of camera
• version 2 batteries that last longer and better charge retention
• version 2 batteries that don't get hot or need to be cooled before charging
• version 2 chargers that don't blink red/green for mysterious reasons (i.e. the Quad chargers)
• perhaps a supercharger that charges 80% instantly and longer for the last 20% (ala apple). 3hrs for a 30min battery to charge is rather sad when v-mounts take 3 hours to charge 2.5 hour batteries. Just saying.

To be honest, I don't understand why there was never a +1+2XLR module with dual (mini-)XLRs for current DSMC cameras released back in 2013 (basically a ProIO without the onboard debayering). Modularity gets shot in the foot when there are no worthwhile modules except those needed to make the camera functional on set (like the SSD module and the +1 for the AC to have touch control)...

We actually helped a 3rd party make exactly that about a year ago... there are some prototypes out there. Unfortunately it never came to market for whatever reason.
