  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Hey Gunliek,

what is nice to see is dumb side modules, like this one pictured above, like they took the old side handle port and made it the whole side, like the mag reader on the operator side,

this is might mean lots of hot swapable dumb side modules, high speed, etc and maybe other processing power for the stills side, like single frame mode to CF media which would be nice in its own module.

Everyone really super underestimates the STILLs side of Dragon. Tethering module, ecc. Remember the DXo mark test scores? This sensor is an ass kicker.

if they put more processing power in, like from R1mx to EPIC MX, then we can expect performance boosts on many areas. That could mean importing 3d party 3d cube LUTS as well.

I hope there is a Micro sd slot somewhere for FW and calibration, etc.

exciting times.

its a great time to be a reduser...our best days are ahead of us for sure.

dino

actually, that has been true since day ONE.

So appreciate the work you did for all of us Dino.

i hope Jared sends out a few more piece to the puzzle.

Agree on all points, david. I do however think that ARRIs focus on LDS and what I see is developed all over the world now, has a bit of impact.

In a way:

Cinema is now digital

Next up:
Signal and workflow.

I have no idea what's planned or on the horizon when it comes to MINI-MAGs, however a few users have asked for something in the realm of a 256GB model. I can also see a need for a 1TB model for other types of users.

Generally speaking in comparison to equivalent media for competitive platforms the MINI-MAGs seem to be in the wheelhouse price-wise. It's very cool you're working a deal to help folks out for sure.

Indeed. I like having more, smaller capacity cards. I agree 64GB is too small, even I don't use those much anymore, as back up maybe. But I love my 128 and 256.

They're mini XLRs. Not 1/8th. 1/8th would be stupid. Mini-XLR is still sorta stupid but less stupid than 1/8th, which is Black Magic Design stupid.

Im not sure you hate to be "that guy"... ;-)

Joking! ...but seriously, there are many different kinds of production scenarios and form factor needs than the standard Feature / Episodic TV 3 person camera crew which is designed around an operator, and 1st and 2nd ACs. If RED can produce various bodies/modules that suit standard crews, while also presenting options for other markets, I'm all for it.

HDMI, for instance, offers some fantastic options for realtime monitoring, recording, as well as transmitting. On certain film sets, it could be considered useless, but other situations, very welcome.

think of the importance of metadata to stills, apply it to the possibilities in motion and it becomes a massively important thing. As an example, just how dxo mark applies distortion correction for the hundreds of lenses they have profiled. That is hardcore, hardwork, but very useful and very applicable information.

if it does not rest in metadata, making those processes simple, it makes them difficult.

A simple, user definable dumb lens focal length which can be applied to metadata in the R3Ds could have major effects in years. If it is not there at the time of capture it is almost impossible to reverse insert.

I have been been on this one for years to no avail.

Regardless... I know the whole Big Mag to Mini Mag is a jump some people are having problems with even though I have been warning about it for a year. To make things easier, we are working out a special deal for those that have REDMAGS already and need to switch to MINIMAGS. It is not a trade-in thing, but more of a one time discount when you jump over to make things a little less painful... based on the number of the big cards you have. So if you have 6 big cards, you can buy up to 6 minimags at a reduced price, only at the time you switch over. Fair?

We are not trying to screw you guys here.. With technology some things just can't live forever.

TOIA! :)

It's solvable.
Thing is that you need "good data", not "almost correct data".

the latter is jus a hassle, and then less data is better.

But yes, we're on the same page here.

I don't like mini XLR's they fail particulatey the latches. Its very good to move away front eh 3.5mm jack but ca mini xor needs a specialist cable anyway.

Is a Lemo, Hirose or Tuchel or similar a better bet ?

if mini XLRs do get used they need to be of very big quality, Red one had a lead in it almost permanently as it could be extracted......

Jim or Jarred said in the "olden days" that mini XLR was the worst mistake they ever made.
Along came the 1/8 :)

If they are getting back to mini XLRs they know what they are getting into.
And I'm pretty sure, full sized XLR will be available for those that want it. modular!

I for one love the decision to move the ports to where they are and to change the 1/8 to small mics as a basic always in, and in their most basic I/O have mini XLR or whatever at least no 1/8

(That said 1/8 with screw lock are kinda ok - at least better than the standards)

Think about it, guys:
no adaptor module to be seen.
The basic (legacy one) I/O is what, 2cm thick at the brain back side and extending a bit for the ports?
Lovey dovey camera porn reduser hooray days.

Look forward to it. All sounds well thought out. But not mini XLR's ! Hope for more news soon.

Dino, that image is horribly cropped. Can you please upload the full image? ;-)

ha ha ha ...i gave you exactly what i got, certainly you were joking...i think it would be easier to get the nuclear destruction codes from the State Department then see more detail in this photo...could luck with that request.

Yes, I was joking - hence the blinky smiley ;-)

yes same REDVOLTS and same RED BRICKS.

two things I'm really hoping for are internal prores recording and lower power operation.

just a list of battery recycling centers for our DEADVOLTS :)

Well maybe if the weapon no longer needs a front fan that would mean that the system runs cooler and requires less power and the volts last longer. That would be amazing.

Hi Jarred,

any news about power consumption?

Please tell us you guys managed to lower it substantially with maybe new ASICs and/or an improved production process! ;)

In a world of disruption, one man struggles to enter the nuclear destruction codes that could mean...
