  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Phil's REDRAY Releases

Seriously though. I'm actually working on doing something rather unique that all will be invited to. It will be out here in LA and be in 4K. Working on some logistics, creative insanity, and funding right at this moment. It's going to take me a slow cooked minute to put together, but if it all goes off without a hitch it will be beautiful.

Sounds great! Looking forward to it Phil.

Thanks Phil for the downloads :)

Did anyone have issues playing the "its just paint" for the first time?

My unit froze then I had to power cycle it down twice cause the first one the unit was unresponsive.

Both reboots did the 3 min init.

Sorry to hijack your thread Phil but since your viewers here all have REDRAYS, I had to ask :)

Jeff, please try this and this link.

Thank you Phill, your posts are always education, your work is inspiring.

Hey Jonas,

Thanks for that. Mine actually finished yesterday, it just took forever. But maybe your link will help someone. I know I can't be the only one having such issues! It looks like the bottleneck was one one of the couple hops very close to Phil's server. Normally things like this usually don't cause much trouble and network traffic should get routed around clogs like that, but it happens from time to time. There's some sort of obstruction between myself and the artbyphil.com site. Loading the web site just crawls. I'm on a 12Mbps connection here and everything else seems to be working great, file transfers and all, just not artbyphil.com. Heh.

That's certainly not hijacking. I haven't seen this behavior yet and I have been trying to break the machine. This particular RRE .RED has been on a few REDRAYs and I haven't seen that yet even.

I also had no problems with Phil's clips (other than the fact that they were too short). This weekend I start playing with RRENCODE.

Sadly Im watching off an HDTV :(

Is there a noticeable difference between the RR encode vs a blu-ray on a 1080TV?

Yep. It's visibly better. I did a freaking side by side using Blu-ray optimizations just to be sure.

Phil thanks for that :)

Until we get this thing on the network I cant even start on any encoding tests :(

Phil quick question.

What was your worklflow getting this to RREncode?

Im struggling here with 10 second clips.

Have to use the R3D > DPX > RREncode route due to consistent crashes.

How did you deal with audio?

Do you have time to make a tutorial :)

Heh. I can write the steps quicker than a full blown graphical thingy.

Export DPX via Redcine-X Pro or whatever. I export 16 bit DPX files that go into 4096x2160 containers. So my UHD4K (3840x2160) material has "bars" on the left and right. This is more of a framing thing. If your playback device can support 4096x2160 content you can do that too. My projects so far have been 23.976 fps.

Audio, just export a stereo uncompressed WAV file and "attach it via" Redcine-X Pro. You did make a "REDRAY Panel" as the instructions recommend I imagine, this is where you can do that. You can also I think right click and "attach audio" on a selected image sequence.

You can choose your "poster frame" if you'd like. I actually tend to do this in Photoshop anyways and save at .jpgs to the correct dimensions.

Drop this into a timeline and create or use an export preset for your RRencode at whatever bitrate. Render.

Than drop that entire exported .RED folder package into a "CONTENT" folder on an SD Card or USB 2.0 drive and plug that into REDRAY. It will ingest the footage automatically.

Phil you ROCK!!

I will give this a go.

I take it you also have the RREncode crash straight from R3Ds right?

And does RREncode use the ROCKET at all in conversion?

Thanks again!

Nope. It works for me. I am on PC, Windows 7. Are you getting any specific errors?

RREncode doesn't use the Rocket as of yet. So don't do that :)

Ive tested on Mac Pro 2012 units with or without ROCKET.

One machine did a few second clip without crashing.

The crash reports are they typical Apple ones that take to long to explain.

Oh well as long as I have space for DPX files, Im good.

I guess I can just spit these out of RESOLVE then convert in RCXPro...correct?
