Any idea on how the newest EF-RF speedbooster will work with KOMODO? Saw this today and wondering if it will still cover the sensor at max resolution/get us closer to lenses acting like FF? I own a set of FD primes and want to have them converted to EF/cinevised and this might just push me to get it done.

It should. Metabones is using the same glass element on their adapters in this category and coverage "should work". I have one being sent over and I'll test it out.

Speedbooster works great on Komodo. I shot with this combo and it is great for low light and to achieve extreme wide angle shots with high optical performance.

Honestly not expecting any real issues as the glass is the same, mostly concerned about interface and lens control/data pass through.

Metabones speed booster seems to be the way to go in a lot of situations for full frame glass.

Any chance you slapped a C mount lens on that bad boy in your tests?

Looks like it would work if the lens is willing to mate with the adapter, i see girth being an issue in a few cases.

I definitely want to use some of my 16mm glass on Komodo. 2k 16:9 Red format (2048x1152) vignettes very slightly in the corners at the wide end with my Angenieux 12-120 HEC on the Bolex. A 105% DVE push in eliminates it. The pixel pitch is smaller for Komodo, 4.4 micron vs 5 micron for the Bolex, so the lens should cover Komodo without vignetting. The Angie 12-240 doesn't vignette at all and might cover 2.5K, but probably not 3k. Image circle diameter for the Bolex 2k 16:9 is 11.58mm, between 16mm and S16mm frame size. Some super 16mm lenses might fully cover 3K.

I have a C-Mount Adapter here and literally one C-Mount lens, but the good news is with the Flange Focal Distance where it is, you'll likely have a lot of success here.

I'll post this link with the caveat that Komodo's full supported resolution/format list hasn't been sent to me just yet, but with Komodo 3K HD you'll have a very Super 16mm Format:

I'd bet in most cases 3K FF, 2:1, and WS would also cover.


While we're on the topic of smaller format glass, the MFT Flange Focal Distance is 19.25mm, 0.75mm too shallow for RF. However, I suspect there will be "ways" to get certain MFT glass on there if you really are feeling adventurous.

L-Mount is 20mm and prior to the Covid-19 pause in industry I had several manufacturers confirm RF-Mount versions of L-Mount lenses, or dedicated RF stuff coming. I think a couple of the larger 3rd party companies will tune back into RF this year once Canon drops the next 3 bodies, add Komodo it that list you have a pretty broad range of cameras supporting the new mount.


There's a lot, and I mean a lot, of affordable glass you'll be able to tap into on Komodo via various adapters. I know of a couple things that were about to be announced at NAB which will likely be revealed around the rescheduled Cine Gear time frame, if not sooner.
 
So... Jumping off on a slight tangent here. Can Komodo work with the control ring version of Canon’s EF to RF adapter? Going to get one and de-click the ring if it works.
 
It's going to be a bigger concern on image performance in the edges on each individual Speedbooster and unless they are all using the same optics there will be some variance in quality. Coverage-wise you are actually within the design spec of FF35 3:2's image circle despite having a wider FOV similar to a 38mm sensor on a typical 0.71X reducer.

I'll keep it from getting too technical. Focal Reducers/Speedboosters are good at what they do. Shrinking a projected image circle to a smaller format size while increasing the intensity of light, usually about 2/3rds to 1 stop.

Keep in mind lenses are optimized to project their light to a flat surface and are usually designed pretty tightly. But optics are still optics and adding glass "does something" always. In the case of reducers you have one piece of glass working with a variety of lenses and not optimized for any of them in particular. And what you will uncover, because all lenses are different, is different levels of optical performance across the frame compared to just what you would expect when filming on a larger format, even on the same sensor.

Potential stuff you might discover:
- More Vignetting than you'll experience on the native format
- Enhanced Chromatic Aberration usually towards the corners and edge of frame
- Enhancing of other Optical Artifacts, like Coma on wide angle lenses for example
- Possible image projection related things, like even less coverage (that's part of where the possible larger vignette comes)
- A difference in lens flare, glare, contrast, and internal reflections compared to just the native lens
- Increase in aliasing and moire


That's the quick stuff. I'm not shooting down reducers. I use them for what they are good at. I more or less am somewhat bashing the marketing of the "miracle solution", pretty much the whole world that uses these only focus on the resolving power increase center frame and sort of ignore the other 90% of the image. Lenses are tools and it's important to understand what is happening to the image quality when you add optics in the mix. Companies aren't going to ever sell you the negatives and hell most reviewers were told what these did, which contributed to the "this is just always better" mindset. It's not always better. It's a rear of the lens auxilary optic. The cool thing is they exist and allow for the creativity, they are actually rather common in the world of astrophotography and other scientific imaging.

Use them or don't use them. I like them. It's just important to know what you're getting into. Stopping down cleans up some of the bad stuff, much like what you should do when using an expander as well (that goes the other way and usually eats a stop or more of light to project a smaller format lens to a larger format).

As to if there are "meaningful" differences to benefit or detract from the image quality you are after, well that's the whole thing really.

I suspect with some of the newer cameras, based on the early stuff I'm seeing right now, many are discovering once again that Variable NDs aren't the "perfect or ideal" solution either. It's just one of those things. Until you discover or know the downsides, you don't really know until it pisses you off.
 
The obvious choice here is too wait for the Komodo to ship to us commoners, rent the speedbooster and test it with the Contax (duh). Thank you for the explanation Phil, much appreciated once again.
 
Sorry if this has been asked already but, what adaptor is included with the Komodo already? Also, what adaptor(s) would you advise one buy in advance as a hopeful pending Komodo owner?

Great info I'm going to use canon ND,As far as the lens Xeen 35mm Classic , some good lighting will see real damage lol.
