  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Philosophy change...

I generally agree with this move, but it's also nice to have some kind of general roadmap. Some of us are planning entire films around new cameras. Hopefully you will find the right balance, Jim.

If you look in the red bar at the top of a post from a RED employee, on the right side of the bar next to the post number you will see something that says "RED TEAM". It's a little hard to see if you don't already know its there due to its hue. Click on that and you will be taken to the next post from a RED team member in that thread. Thusly you can skip every post that doesn't come from RED if you want.

Leo... this was a huge help. I'm sure this feature is documented, but it's not exactly intuitive (and I say this as a former web designer), so thanks for calling attention to it.

Sure thing. :)

I really only knew about it because I happened to be participating in the thread that spawned the feature, so I try to call attention to it when I can becuase it is a very useful one :)

It really is, perhaps, the one thing people should get an e-mail about when they join the board.

"By the way, every post from a RED Team member has a small "RED TEAM" button in the header of their post. Clicking on it will automatically take you to the next post in the thread from any RED Team user."

Yes to general roadmaps and yes to hints if there is a competitive product looking. Remember that an upgradeable program is a huge difference than buying the next shiny object over and over...

We are still here.

Jim

Jim, can you confirm that Epic-S is still on that general roadmap? Lots of people asking about it.

Oh yeah, sorry I know its off topic for the thread, but I thought I should add that in addition to the button on each RED post there is also one next to the thread title at the top of the page that will take you to the first RED TEAM post too, if RED has posted in that thread.

This post:

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?62912-RED-Road-Map...&p=814359&viewfull=1#post814359

makes it sounds like it is, but I can't find the post he's referring to.

The "I already posted it wasn't [taken off the table]" is what looks good to me. Though I agree...I can't find where that was previously posted. Thanks Häakon.

Oh, and Jim. I know you don't need me saying this, but don't try to give $20 moon rides or free Las Vegas houses. Just do what you do; make great cameras!

At first I had major issues with the switch to a real-name forum too. It took me awhile to sign-up again after that because I didn't like it. Over time I've come to understand why this change was made and I now appreciate it and even like it.

I feel for me this announcement will be similar. My first reaction is "What? No! That's something I love about RED". But I bet as time goes on and I see how this change in philosophy is actually implemented I will totally get it and it will then seem the obvious choice. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that right now there's a part of me that is, uh, unsure about the decision.

But really in any case, wasn't this said back around NAB too? And really hasn't it for the most part been in place since then anyway?

That is a very wise decision, I just was just told by
BandPro that Arri is launching a 5K camera at IBC!

Good to hear they've stepped up. It's a shame they (won't mention names from Arri) keep telling me that 1080 is fine and they have no reason to do anything different. The problem there, is that they've lost my respect by lying to me.
(and I'm tired of the "soft" Alexa images anyway.

Jim, thanks for continuing to raise the bar and force others to follow suite.
I for one will miss the anxiousness of when a product will arrive, but understand the need for change in the business model.
Can't wait for more!!!

Their taking a more silent approach is to me indicative of the RED teams confidence in their current and upcoming products. It's basically saying to their potential customers, trust us, we've got your back covered in terms of being able to give you the tools you need without ripping you off price-wise. But they're also saying, we have to be more careful now, because that big blood-sucking behemoth conglomerate we took on is now starting to roll our way. We showed them which way to go, and now we have to make sure we stay one step ahead of them or they'll roll right over the top of us and brings things to a stand-still or crawling pace again.

For us as current and potential customers, we just have to trust the RED team do in fact know what they are doing, in terms of where they take the technology and in terms of doing what they have to do to keep their business viable so they can continue to innovate and keep things progressing.

Anyone who's into this scene will know that they should never again make a purchasing choice without first checking what RED's doing. Jim has just stated that that level of information will remain available - "..If we see that our customers will need to make a decision on some emerging product, we'll help..." I could be wrong, but I take that to mean, if one of their competitors announces a product, someone from RED will still be able to say, "No, investing in that would not be a good idea, can't tell you why exactly, but I recommend holding off on that purchase if you don't need it straight away..."

Again, it's a matter of trust.

The danger for RED is if they go down the more secretive route and then fail to come up with the superior goods. In that scenario they'll have alienated their audience through the lack of communication, and then ruined the trust people placed in them based on their past successes. As long as they keep the communication channels open, they'll still be a preferred supplier though, for a lot of people, even if their products aren't really any better than their competitors anymore.

At the current time though, with products going out the door that will arguably be the best there is for several years to come, what sort of feedback do RED really need from the forum members here in regards to future products? And how long has it been since that was what these forums was about anyway?

Let the currently announced products come out, use them, or do research on others' use of them, and then start talking about future, improved, products, if that's necessary. There's nothing stopping such idea sharing, but don't expect anyone from RED to say yeah that's a great idea we'll definitely include that in our next product, or to come to the forums asking for help or feedback in such a way that tips off their competitors about what it is they're trying to do. I think those days are over, if it ever really was like that.

Two pages of posts have appeared while I've been writing this, better post it while it's still somewhat relevant.

Final point though, and I'm only guessing here, but I suspect this whole thread is a massive over-reaction, and that the original post was just the result of the combined frustrations of having people incessantly ask for release dates while ignoring the good stuff, and having to modify your own business in order to deal with competitors who truly don't deserve the rewards they're going to get for coming so late to the party (the party they'll then instinctively try to kill).

I really appreciated Red's approach on the Red Dragon announcement. It was a great middle ground between "going dark" and "kiss and tell." I hope that's how things are handled going forward.

The camera you want is later this year.

This is an example of what I think is the perfect update.

It's short sweet and to the point.

It gives us exactly what we need without giving the "competition" anything solid to work with.

When one is walking in the wilderness and notices not just one wolf watching you a but a whole pack, you start to walk more silently. The same goes for bears such as Arri. That's like passing by a Grizzly, somewhat a freaky situation. Jim, you have Hollywood. Your cameras are the best. Don't let the prosumer market fall just in the pursuit of maintaining the professional one. This is all I will say anymore about the matter as I accept my part in the ruffling of feathers which in my reality, should be ruffled, and why I have come to respect RED as a leader for so long until this so called dark age came upon us from a small just rebellion sort of reminiscent of the civil rights when the system started to initially question itself as truly equal opportunity state, of the people, truly for the people.

I have to admit that you're right, Jim. This is the way.
The Red Boy is being an adult, and a man should act in a proper manner.

But please forgive me, I have loved so much the young one, that... I can't explain my feelings.

Anyway, let's face the future, there is a graduation party somewhere, and I will be' there to enjoy!

Whoa. I did not know that. You have just changed my viewing habits. Thanks!

[Now I can leave this reply, knowing that it can be easily skipped over as well. Sweet.]

I'm not too disappointed by this announcement, its the passion from everybody at RED starting with Jim that keeps me swinging by the forums everyday. Your Passion rubs off onto others Jim. I think you know that already, way too many Reduser members to not know that.

Good Luck,

God Bless
