  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Peter and the Primes

I would like to know more about this strange looking bokeh:

How did this happen? Is it an interference with the background? Is it a compression artifact? How does it behave in a moving picture?

Just wondering...
It's a lens property. Just so no one thinks this makes the RPPs somehow inferior, Arri Ultra-Primes exhibit the same type of bokeh:

Casey, I love yellow when it is done right. Fun looking grade.

I sure can't wait for the 18, as well as the 14. I could live without the 21, but the 65 fills nicely the "hole" between 50 and 85. I would love to see as 150 at some point in the future to bridge the gap to 300. This is The Prime Set to have with Your RED ONE and 5K Scarlet/Epic...

I would love to see a 21mm. I think that if I were stuck indoors I might be fighting hard to use the longest length possible for every setup, and options would be welcome. And I think that if you are using longer lengths you might be more likely to be able to reposition. Still I am sure that the 65mm would look gorgeous for when you don't want to use the 50mm and you can't go much longer. I totally see what you are saying, the jump from the 50 to the 85 does feel a bit big. If I had to chose between the 21mm and 65mm I would probably end up with the 21 though.

How did he do 1.2 ND with no IR filter and yet with no visible IR degradation as is typical if any of us do 1.2ND on a sunny day?

That has nothing to do with the camera.... that has to do with the Red Pro Primes. :coolgleam:

Kind of figured you guys would tackle the IR pollution with the lenses. Looks very cool and I'm glad that I won't have to use my hot mirror when using these lenses.

Any news on the cases for the lenses that Red is suppose to make?

Wow! Does this mean we can mothball our IR blockers when using the RPPs?

Could someone please explain what the deal is with IR? I really haven't the slightest clue about it so if anyone would, I'd really appreciate a "third grade" explanation with the practical implications of this IR pollution you guys are talking about. Also I'd love to understand what will be the upside from using lenses with this capability.

IR occurs on hot days usually. You see it when there is a lot of heat in the air, shooting outdoors in the bright sun. You will notice it when you start stacking ND filters and cutting down your light. It comes across as a pinkish/purplish haze in your image that milks it up a little bit. IR filters reflect(bounce) that light off the lens like a mirror. The RPPs have some magic mojo coating that assists with this blocking of this IR pollution.

Does it only become visible when stacking NDs? Or would it also become visible with a naked lens at small apertures? Does overexposing/underexposing an image have an effect on the visibility of IR?

Thanks for the help Richard.

I've only really noticed it when using ND filters 0.9 and above. Haven't tried to overexpose or under to compensate. It's something that is just there though, easier to remove in post. Even easier to remove by sticking an IR filter in front. I think IR pollution depends on your tolerance for it. Personally, I don't let it get me down.. It's nice to know that the RPPs are handling this issue though..

Roberto,
Basically in normal light there is a certain ratio of visible light to IR light that is okay. When heavy ND (this is actually visible on Red in as little as .6 ND and gets really visible at 1.2, etc) are applied, ND only blocks the visible light and lets all IR through. This creates a bad ratio of way too much IR which degrades the colors, gives the image a "milky" look and can often turn black clothing to purple.

There's a great thread on here that shows this but I can't find it.

Shawn said it better.. You would have a hard time 'seeing' IR pollution in colder, winter climates..

yup cases are in stock...

Woohoo!

I thought the cases were going to be 6-space (for either ther 300mm or the 18mm when it ships) but the picture in this thread shows only 5...which is it? And this picture showed 5 in a single row, i'd sure prefer the two rows of 3

If I will be ever able buy any cine lenses (primes) that would be for sure RED Pro Primes definitely for so many reasons or simply to say is about their price and performance.

The cases are 6 holes and not rectangular like my personal case Peter showed.. that was a one off case I made for something else.

These are the RPP cases we are selling.... which are much better:

Nice! Can we get a shot of the inside? And what will they cost?
