  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Peter and the Primes

I sometimes see color shifts when using REC709. Did you happen to record any of that footage that day? Any R3Ds?

sorry - no cards with me to record.
Stopping down a stop or two got rid of the effect. Seems optical to me.
I hope I'm wrong.

anyone at Red care to go into the store and shoot something bright with the 300 RPP thats sitting there on the camera?...

Not saying that this is the case with RED because I really don't know, but I've read that the demosaicing algorithm in some digital cameras can affect the amount of CA that appears.

The blue/purple fringing is there in the R3Ds that Peter released. I mentioned it in post #131 in this thread. It's not a processing or colorspace issue, definitely an optical anomaly. I have also seen the same fringing with my RED 300mm. ...And similar fringing or other CA artifacts with Ultra Primes and Cooke S4's. No lens is "perfect" even the coveted Master Primes.

I haven't seen anything with the RPP's yet that really concerns me. So far it's quite the opposite. The clips from Peter as well as Richard Darge's video he shot in the RED parking lot look great.

sorry a little late to the party here... The PF ( purple fringing ) on the 300mm fully wide open is somewhat normal.. not only to the 300mm but just is a characteristics of multi-element lens designs in general as Jeff very well points out. Nothing to hide.. it happens, and it's real.

That said, the image Sanjin processed himself and posted looks to be overly-saturated to the nines so it exaggerates the effect, but I think his post may have a somewhat alterior motive behind it.. the guy loves his old glass and wants the world to know it holds up to current day glass ( and thats not a bad thing, because some of what he says is very true)... I love Sanjin, but you gotta take what he says with a grain of salt, just like you need to take what I am saying right now with a grain of salt, we both are obviously biased.

Regardless of that, this is truly a normal occurrence, and if even put up the all-mighty Master-primes you will see similar aberrations, specially with colors in the spectrum of those flowers.

Well it isn't demosaicing. I saw it live on the camera.

you are actually right in the point you are trying to make, but technically wrong a little, if you saw it live on the camera, you saw it demosaiced:)

Thanks for the replies, Jeff and Jarred. Normally with zeiss lenses you have to zoom in greatly to see the blue fringing. What struck me in the red store was that I could see it easily on the 5.6" monitor. On a white computer mouse. And it's very clear in the car yard shot in this thread, and there's no alterior motive there.
There are plenty of great shots posted from the RPPs, it's true.I hope you're right, there's no great flaw here. I've got a reservation down, too!

The Red's internal viewfinder processing greatly exaggerates CA and purple/blue fringing, I see it all the time in the viewfinder and it's barely visible in the finished files.
This is especially true with Cooke S4s which have horrendous purple fringing on the viewfinder.

That's one of the things I was trying to point out in that other thread. The processing was having a big effect on the degree of CA. It appears to me that the Sharpening/OLPF compensation in Redcine 3.18 has been tweaked a bit and seems a bit stronger, producing more artifacts than in the past. Am I imagining this? Sanjin's processing seemed to involved some strong sharpening. The comparison was bad too because it was a completely different shot from the one with his vintage lens, so tough to really make a comparison objectively.

My only point about the demosaicing and processing in general is that if there is some CA there due to the optics (and as has been pointed out many lenses suffer from it at times) it can be influenced by the demosaic and other processing decisions you make. I did not see it as much in the version I posted in that thread. It might be there but minimal.

To me, the RPPs look great from what I'm seeing, albeit I'm seeing them showcased via compressed quicktime movies. I like the look. Richard's video was great because he was mixing shots from the K35s with the RPPs and I like those Canons for different reasons than I think I'll like the RPPs. Which is why it's great to have so many options these days.

Has anyone shot anything with 35mm and the RPPs yet? That would be great to see. A good test by the way would be to take a shot that has some hot highlights and get that CA while shooting on the RED and then shoot the same shot with 35mm and see what the effect is. I'm curious whether some of what we're seeing is the difference in dynamic range amongst the channels. Perhaps detail is retained in one or two channels and blown out in the other or some such effect.

Anyway, can't wait to shoot something with these lenses and learn their characteristics.

Evin is right.. the de-mosaic in the viewfinder path and the de-mosaic used in the post tools ( RED alert! etc ) are two very different animals.. the viewfinder is a "quick" output meant for speed and zero lag rather than the true quality that is contained in the RAW R3D files.

Excuse my ignorance here, but I'm about to pick up a new set of ND's and an IR cut filter/hot mirror. In that we're also ordering a set of Red Primes, does that make the $ spent on the IR a waste of money?

Thanks in advance.

Nick.

Thanks, Evin. This makes sense from my experience too, from using Swiss lenses, and seeing the fringing on camera on set using the magnify button, then being happy that it's not visible in the online. But it's very evidently there in the car yard shot posted above, don't you think?

I can't tell if it's CA in that shot. The color temp is obviously cool and there seems to have been mist or fog in the air adding the slight glow to the reflections. We'll have a chance to test for CA at SALT this weekend stay tuned.

I am up on a Bainbridge Island in the middle of Puget Sound off the coast of Seattle, WA, with Neil Rabinowitz (www.neilrabinowitz.com). His wife Beth grilled a king pink salmon and we just had a fantastic dinner. This place reminds me so much of my own country (Slovak Republic), as well as of New Zealand. I love it up here. It's going to be hard to go back to LA on Wednesday... But the footage we shot over the weekend is waiting and I can't wait to get back into it...

Thank You all for the kind words, but lets please focus on the star of this thread - the RPP's. Having spent the weekend with the complete set (including the 300) there is very little left to desire...

I sure can't wait for the 18, as well as the 14. I could live without the 21, but the 65 fills nicely the "hole" between 50 and 85. I would love to see as 150 at some point in the future to bridge the gap to 300. This is The Prime Set to have with Your RED ONE and 5K Scarlet/Epic...

See You back soon...

:) Peter

Ups... I looks like Neil wants to keep me for one extra day. I will be back tomorrow (Thursday) and upload more stills and R3D's...

Sorry about that...

:crying: Peter

PS: Jarred - I wish I have the #10 & the RPPs here. I could have brought some amazing footage - including some hummingbirds...

Thanks, Evin. Greatly appreciated.

Excellent Peter thanks for loading this stuff up for us, very helpful in helping to sell this acquisition to my new partners.
