  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Perfect

I love it. My only problem is I can't afford one yet. But that sure as hell ain't nobody's fault but mine (and my old boss:glare:). Certainly not Red's fault for making a camera like this at this price point. Anyone made up an Alexa comparison table yet? It's gotta be a close thing...

S35, 4k, raw, DR from hell, small, upgradeable to an even nicer sensor, $15600 for a professional working package( for those with lenses already) and a ticket to a very red program/family.
I saw a lot of threads saying bad things and that's ok, lay down your frustration , I just thought of starting one to express how happy I am right now.

I'm glad you're happy with the Epic-S (that's what it is in spec and price). Because that's not a Scarlet, according to years of advertising made by RED themselves.

It is the original Scarlet S35 though, which I was used to see everyone to praise in these same boards as the best RED deal ever, taken the price point.

A dream came true.

Later but better than never :-)

Absolutely thrilled here! I've been waiting on the sidelines to get into the Red workflow and the Scarlet-X provided a near-perfect entry point for me and the projects I have planned.

Not quite. The S35 was specced to do 5K up to 30 fps (with bursts up to 72 fps) and 2K up to 72 fps and have a maximum data rate of 80 MBps. It's bit depth was, however, only 12 bits.

Honestly, the announcement couldn't have been more perfect for us! Excited to join the Red family in December when it ships! Hoping for S35 all along, and Red came through with an amazing product that I will be proud to shoot on.

LOL Very well seen ;) I just try to be positive when Jim/Jarred finally gave us the 35mm format back! :-)

I am amazed at all the people who bought one without even seeing any footage, etc.. Your believe in Red is beyond believe or you are loaded.
I will wait and see once the camera is out in the wild and get to know shooters reaction to it. And please do not write 'if you want to see footage look at the footage of an Epic'. An Epic is an Epic, and a Scarlet might be something else.

I missed the Red One train 4 years ago, not missing this one now.

Yep, with there. I nearly ordered it, then I read over the specs and was horrified at the fps and the windowing.

I'll wait for footage before I pass judgment. I'm sure it will give great images though.

The sensor is the same. And don't forget RED has a large(r) history since RED ONE.

The comaprison is quite hard to make...
Alexa is available for 60K USD... Scarlet goes for 12k USD...
Alexa is HD, if you add alot more money you get HD raw uncompressed... but then your camera is considerably big.
Scarlet has quadHD RAW with 3:1 compression... And is then so small so you could gaffer tape two of them together and shoot 3D...
For the 45K USD you save on getting a scarlet instead of alexa you could kit out your camera quite a bit... this would be my choices instead of buying a alexa.

2 scarlets... 30kUSD
1 top range steady cam with electronic gyro head able to pack 2 scarlets.... 13K USD
Surrounidng gear, extra screens, rod stuff and others... 10K USD
A top notch red rocket raid 8TB with laptop.... 7K USD

Then instead of buying into the not so usefull arri raw I would save the money for upcoming battery packs and wifi transmission and lenses..... and maybe the remote controlled 70km/h wirecam..

If you have the above I would not see any production or DP in the world that would say that they rather rent alexa body instead of the above...

Having two or more camera houses is worth a whole lot on set, not only when shooting 3D. Just having a spare one is sometimes the most precious thing ever. Shooting on a tight and wide lens on two angles is also very much a like amoung directors.. not so much among the DP's since they feel they loos control...

I honestly didn't know what to expect...I didn't know what would make me happy, and where the point is that I'd be disapointed. When I started hearing the specs, and heard the price of the Canon release I panicked a little. I was worried that it wasn't really competitive enough to force RED down a little. I still expected 2/3 and 3K just being somewhat safe and realistic in what I expected. So when I started hearing specs I kind of worried about the price...I was torn between 2/3 and s35. I like 2/3 for my style of shooting and to have more DOF. But then you see images with the S35 shallow DOF and it kind of blows your mind how beautiful it looks.

When I saw that in the end the reality is I really wanted that. Especially with the ability to use Canon lenses out of the box. And cheaper mounts were what I was hoping for. I was kind of shocked for the first few minutes. I didn't know how to respond. 4 months ago I really set my limit at 12K for everything. I took some time the days prior wondering if it would be much more. And found myself open to making the jump. It's something thats had to grow on me, and still is. But what RED did is really what I wanted. And at a great value.

Glad to see a positive thread. I'm really having a hard time even coming to the site. I've been sticking to the RECON and Epic threads simply because they appreciate what it is.

I couldn't be more excited for the 1st. Thanks for making this thread. I wouldn't call the camera perfect, nothing really is, but I think it's as close to perfect for me as it will get. It has the ability to grow through upgrades and sensors. You really can't ask for more. And to think this is only RED's third camera. How long has it taken other companies to get to even producing a HD Camera? I can count 10 sony Cameras that are in the HDV range alone.

Well done RED.

Red has made the perfect camera for me. I have zeiss glass for my canon's and wasn't ready to give them up if a Scarlet 2/3" model came out, so I was planning to get a Sony F3 instead. Luckily I waited the extra month for the Canon/RED announcement. 90% of my work doesn't require high frame rates so what we got in the final Scarlet appealed to me. When we need to, we will rent an epic.

There isn't a perfect camera for every job, but the Scarlet is certainly perfect for me at this point in time. Much much More then I expected at the price point.

Jeffrey, I don't really mean Scarlet is a perfect camera, there is no such thing.
But it is as perfect as it could be imho.
I was having a hard time reading reduser as well, all this bashing... I think it's not fair.

We are super stoked. Got out order in late on the 3rd because of the server issues. I wasn't really interested in the 2/3rd sensor scarlet, I even started to look at the f3, having used it on several jobs, and was eagerly awaiting the Canon announcement. Even before they spit out the price I was completely dissapointed. Then it was Red's turn...blew me away with what they were offering. Exactly what I wanted and more! Big thanks to Red for having the balls to put out a camera like this.

Just like everyone here...eagerly awaiting the email that says "Shipping"!

I'm just ignoring anything that's a complaint. Standard Internet Protocol is the same thing as Fairytale Bridge Maintenance: do not feed the trolls. Ever. It will only make things worse.

I'm excited at the prospects of what a Scarlet could do for me. Not entirely sure how I'm going to afford everything I need yet, but that will only push me harder to find paying work.

We are so excited to get our hands on this camera. We like the package of features being shipped far more than the 2/3"-and-3k version that was being talked about previously. The large sensor and 4k recording are far more valuable for what we do than super high frame rates.

Thank you, Red for making it economical for our little company to become a part of the family!
