  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Perfect SCARLET-X rig - buying advice

Phil you put a R1 in there? Those rigs where you hold the camera a foot in front of you sort of work for DSLRs, but I'd think once you double/triple the camera weight with a Scarlet/R1 it'd get very tiring to hold all that camera all with your arms, no? R1 gets pretty tiring even on the shoulder with proper balance so your back is taking most of the weight in my experience.

It was offset with Redrock Micro handles and more back weight for balance on the shoulder. When I put the initial rig together I built it around an HVX200 setup. It's morphed several times and had some things like the cage added to it. It's not as sturdy as I'd like it though.

Jon,
That red clutch looks sick. Any ideas for monitoring? Are you gonna use EVF or 5'' touch?

Thanks,
Jack

Yeah The 5" Touch is on the way, but I don't know if any of you have ever tried to pull crisp focus during an event or something, but in my experience (not with RED equip. but with my previous DSLR... Panny GH1) it is hard to get crisp focus with just the LCD screen. This may not be so with the RED Touch, I'm not sure, but I am going to get the EVF as well. The 1 and only reason I didn't order it right now is the backorder status... I don't want to be counting on it to be here before I go to Mexico next month, and then it not show up. Either way I will order after Christmas.

I haven't used the Clutch in any way yet, the pictures were today, and I had just opened the boxes, lol! But on first fit, it is very comfortable... The way it rests on the shoulders, and the front and back pads, I can literally let go of the handles and it stays still on my shoulder. It's pretty awesome so far, but I'll know for sure next week when I get my SCARLET and put it all together. I will post more pictures of the rig when it is complete.

Clutch looks nice, have you used it at all yet? I used one briefly on a rental and had issues with the grips not locking in place no matter how hard I tightened them. It looks badass but I'm concerned about the useability for the price. How are you liking it? Are the front and back braces worth the trouble? I didnt have time to figure out all the pieces when I was using it and it seemed needlessly complicated, but maybe that was because I was on a job and in a rush. Seems like a cool idea if you are going to be handheld all day, but it didn't seem like it'd be quick to take it on and off sticks a lot.

Noah, I have noticed that some of the m4 twist lock handles are going to be a little challenging. For example the handles that lock down the chest piece are so tiny that they are a bit hard to turn. I however am not going to let this discourage me, because I am determined to use RED and only RED equipment. It won't be too challenging to get onto and off of sticks, I'll just have to make a quick adjustment on the aforementioned chest piece twist lock handle. I don't see any needlessly complicated parts to the rig, It's made to be super flexible so that any body shape can use it...

I think many others are going to find themselves in this position too.

+1

It's good to know that we have and/or will have even more options to rig the Scarlet in the near future. I used a rigged DSLR just a few times, so don't really have a lot of experience with different rigs, but would be looking at something simple, stable (good control), and versatile (hand held, shoulder, tripod). I'll first get the feel of the camera and will be checking some of your crazy configurations.

Jon Jones I _salute_ you! Pulling the trigger on a rig worth damn near 1/2 the price of the camera? I can only dream. I think like most of the Scarlet crew here, I will be shopping for an alternate. My splurge was the BOMB, but 25 yrs of using Sony BVW viewfinders has spoiled me...

so far the best quality-for-value shoulder piece seems to be the Innocinema RAZOR for me...

Keep those rig ideas coming Lads!

I think many Scarlet userss will prefer the DUAL or QUAD Battery Module. (plus Module adapter) as swapping batteries every 20 minutes in the side handle is a PIA

Battery life is probably going to be one of the biggest issues when shooting on the scarlet... but I really don't like the idea of using the large Red Bricks or other AB/V mount battery solutions. I'm hoping the battery module comes out sooner than later. Its tough to swallow the price of those redvolts though, that adds up quick.

Is there documentation around that lists how many watt hours a redvolt is?

I believe it's listed in the EPIC manual as 30Wh, and REDVOLT XL will be 90Wh, but I'm not sure what the status of those is. Unfortunately it looks like REDVOLT is 2x as expensive as RED BRICKs per Watt Hour, and RED BRICKS are not cheap. The handle the REDVOLTs go in isnt cheap either. I opted out of the whole REDVOLT/sidehandle system for this reason myself.

I've been trying to find centre of lens to base of Scarlet measurement, it appears to be around 90mm, is this correct ? This measurement is vital , as other have observed, in trying to figure correct configurations for rails, MBs etc.

Where does the Mantis Rig lie among these other handheld options? Do people find it worth the extra money over the innocinema Razor? Is the Clutch worth 2 1/2 x more than it as well?

so Mike, are you using Red Bricks then and the rod mount? Seems cumbersome but i'm starting to understand why some people may choose to go that route.

So many posts after a day. Thanks for helping, but please let's stay on topic.

I talked to Ryan from Wooden Camera. He said he has a baseplate in the works and sent me this image. The baseplate will be available in 2 weeks. It has dovetail support (they will also offer dovetail plate) and it looks great. Available with 15mm and 19mm clamps. Costs:
Core unit is $399, clamps are $120 each.

Wow great! Looks like the grey matches the colour of my Scarlet-X.

Any word on how much the wooden camera Dovetail will cost? And is the above bridgeplate Arri Compatible, i.e. interface with an ET Mantis?

Hey what I figure is, I am going to invest my money in a company that has earned it. RED has gone far and beyond all of our expectations, farther than anyone else in the world, and plans to go farther, and faster than anyone else. If I had more money I would spend it here, and in the future, I will continue to. Bottom line... I trust RED.com, Inc. and that my investment will not be in vain.

The Wooden camera bridge plate looks great, I hope the dovetail is priced well then it looks like a realistically affordable solution which to date it seems competitors are in the $900 - $1200 range.

This could be in the $600 - $700 range?

That Letus gear looks Pimp!
