I think the new Panivsion camera looks awesome and theres some cool stuff about it. I think most of us were hoping for more but trying to steer this thread away from that. I am trying to understand the Light Iron workflow and what I get from the Panavision video I saw is that you can add internal Luts (Light Iron luts) in camera. I am shooting a gig right now. I am not able to go to th Cine Gear expo and I would love to know more. Anyone check it out? Do you think Light Iron will be available for the Weapon?

Hey Mike,
I had a quick chat with Michael about this at their booth. Hopefully he or someone from Light iron or Panavision will spot this thread. But a few tid-bits I took from the chat was:
- You wont be working in any of the gamma/color spaces you are used to within the RED. Instead you would choose the Light iron Color. So this new Light Iron color option itself will represent both the gamma and color space. I didnt get a super clear answer on this, but I am thinking this will be a pretty flat canvas so to speak to then color and work on top of. He explained that when deciding where to take this, they were taking into account where DPs and Colorists often go to as a starting place before getting into their final color work.
- The idea was still in their mind that people would be setting the camera to light iron color and then sending that feed out for live grading. You could then use Live Grade to make a CDL + an output LUT.
- Or if you want to add just a LUT on the output you could do that. But this would all be on top of the light iron color and everyone down the chain would use this as their starting point.
- This Light Iron Color would become available in other software once they release the SDK, which should happen.
- This Light iron Color however will not be able to be applied to other cameras footage. This will be due to the new camera passing a flag making the option become available in your software once it see's that flag.
- The camera like you probably assumed will only be able to be rented through Panavision, and you can probably bet they will be packaging this with their dailies carts. But that I am not 100% on...

Cheers,
Jesse

I'm sure Panavision will try to do that, but because LI color science will be a part of the standard Red SDK, you will be free too use any standard dailies tools you use now. And yes, LI color science will only be available with DXL camera, so you will to be able to use it with standard Weapon camera.

The workflow would be the same as with the Red Weapon 8K camera in terms of drive speeds and GPU rendering. Other than that it would be the same as working with 6K Weapon material, the only different thing is that you enable Light Iron Colorspace instead of DragonColor. The rest of the workflow should be the same, with 4K ProRes proxies for editing and R3Ds as original material.

One thing that I don't fully understand and could use some clarity on... is when working with the RED you have different internal Color and Gamma options for monitoring if you do not have a DIT to live grade, nor do you want to load in RMD's and you dont want to look at a log looking image. I understand there will be the option to add LUTs, but will there be internal color and gamma space options like the RED? Because again I am assuming the light iron color is both a gamma and color space combination that would be locked together...Maybe I am wrong about that though...

Cheers,
Jesse
