Just an FYI - I just got the Panasonic TC-P50VT25 Viera 50" 3D monitor and it plays 3D from side-by-side 3D media over HDMI.

That means you can use a DAVIO box to take two SDI streams from SCRATCH (or a 3D rig, or a QTAKE video assist system) - send out a HDMI side-by-side - put on active shutter glasses and you are in business.

This monitor looks great. I have not put the probe on it yet to see how the color stands up for grading - but it looks damn good. Under $2000 with one pair of 3D shutter glasses.

Sounds great! but Under $2000 where? $2500 out here and it is indeed a great monitor for grading after it seats in 100 to 150 hours... and is 10 Bit with HDMI 1.4 - talk to Jeff Kilgore, he should be a sales rep for this panel. :)

Hi Mark,
could you take us through your decision to buy plasma vs led?
Was it 10bit that was the deal maker?

Ive noticed that there is less ghosting on Samsung plasma compared to Samsung LED and in general 3d plasmas seem easier on the eye than led.

Is the plasma that much dimmer than the led?

How does the davio compare to the stereo brain and blackmagics new box?

My guess is that it was for a number of the same reasons we use plasmas as grading monitors in most L.A. based post facilities: Much truer blacks and significantly better off axis performance.

I'm lovin' the 50" VT25 here. I've had mine for about a month now. I paid right at $2400 for it after shipping. I've seen it cheaper since, which I knew would happen, but I needed to get a new monitor up and running and have it broke in and calibrated soon here. I'm finally going to be calibrating it any day now when my new EyeOne Pro arrives from SpectraCal. I've been monitoring it with my old Spyder3, which I don't trust any more, but black levels seem to be holding pretty steady.

The only 3D I have sent to the monitor was some ESPN from a DirecTV unit I hooked up just to see. I've seen other 3D demos on the VT25 displays, but don't have any content of my own just yet.

I went with the VT25 because Panasonic pulled up lame and never gave us a 50" PF12 1080p display. They skipped right over to the 13th generation (the PF20 displays) and severely crippled those monitors unless you spend another $2500 on the SDI board. I'm feeding the VT25 by HDMI from a Kona LHi and from the RED Rocket via an AJA Hi5 3G HD-SDI to HDMI converter. Both sources look great!

The Panny 3D shutter glasses are textbook definition suck, though....

We are putting this monitor into our facility end of this month. I've seen it only in bestbuy and the content they had running on it sucked, and I'm not a HUGE fan of active shutter 3D but as a 2D monitor after calibration it's supposed to look amazing.
You can also use this monitor to send a side by side signal from DVI-HDMI for editorial purposes and not have to afford the davio box cost. That said, when doing grading work you will need to do ask Mark is with the Davio to send two SDI signals through that davio filter to see 3D via Scratch or another grading app.
Looking forward to receiving ours soon! Thanks for sharing Mark.

Are you calibrating through the glasses or directly?

If you buy me two, we'll add some 3d features to RCX :)

I was wondering what is the color gamut of this monitor? There doesn't seem any technical information so far.

There are other alternatives to a Davio for this purpose. The 3ality 3play box, the Blackmagic HDLink Pro3D, and the Inition StereoBrain all come to mind.

I like the Davio, though, and it's a rather magical device that can be used for a whole lot of different things.

Davio is the killer device.

We have a 3ality 3play box as well - I like it for field use.

Mike - have you tested the Blackmagic HDLink Pro3D?? I'm skeptical as the color processing on the HDLink Pro is far from excellent IMO.

Inition StereoBrain is also very cool device - I like it for field use.

Thanks for the thread Mark! I'm just about to order the vt25. I was wondering if anybody could recommend a good but less expensive card to run 10 bit out of my Mac Pro over HDMI for grading? Also any thoughts on calibrating?

We are "burning in" the monitor in now. We'll calibrate on the 12th and let you know what we find out with respect to gamut, etc.

I saw Davio at IBC last year and told myself must get it.

But unfortunately still do not have it.

Next year maybe... :sifone:

I have not tested it, and frankly, I'm skeptical too. But it seemed that someone here was hinting at wanting cheaper solutions, so I responded accordingly. It doesn't necessarily count as a recommendation, though.

I will be calibrating my VT25 any day here now... Still waiting for my EyeOne. I use SpectraCal's CALMAN software and will build a profile for the display with gamut info and will post it. It will be interesting to see what others come up with too. Sometimes there's a bit of variance on plasma displays and it also depends on the viewing environment too.

I'm not sure about calibrating for 3D and not sure if it's possible to use the EyeOne Pro through the active shutter glasses -- it actually seems that may even be just a silly thing to try. The monitor attempts to run a bit brighter for 3D operation it seems, to compensate for the glasses, but I haven't run enough 3D content to the monitor to really know anything. Nor do I have immediate plans for any 3D post with this display. But it's nice knowing I have this feature. I am looking into the BlackMagic Decklink HD Extreme 3D... But I don't want to be the first one to buy one either. I more of an AJA guy... I still may do it though as I'm also seriously considering Resolve for the Mac.

We use CineSpace 3D LUTs for color management and the Hubble probe - pretty revealing - I'll let you know our results -

"broadcast 3D" is like the freekin' wild west right now with respect to luminance levels, etc. - it's more black-n-white to grade for 2D + 3D Real D / Dolby delivery via DCI -

I was referring more to offline editorial monitoring 3D not necessarily grading. I used a Davio box for on set monitoring from two RED's on the ET Rig into a Hyundai monitor and I had nothing but trouble. We did get it to work but it was quite finiky and annoying. Might have been a bad box but for the money it should work consistently and that just wasn't my experience. Glad to hear others are having a good experience with it. Love my Cinetal Cinemage 2000 24' though :-)
