  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Optimo 30-80 or Canon 30-105?

Hi Will,
For me, it was availability first. The optimo waiting list was soooo long I just could not wait . But , yes, I feel the Optimos are fantastic, weight and length also are great and I'll go with the family stating they do have a nice cinematic look. The bug with the protruding rear element that forbids you to use them with a camera that has an optical viewfinder is just a marketing gimmick for Angenieux not to harm their other line of very expensive zooms that had the same range but were twice the price at the time... Anyway, the DP rouge series came out when film was still an option.... ;-)
So I went the ALURA way for many reasons: It's welcome on any PL camera (with or without mirror shutter), I love having the LDS incorporated for the VFX guys, both are the exact same length, no messing around with motors and matte box when switching zooms. The focus marks are Master Prime quality (big yellows marks) . They are built like tanks and will be in my kit for a very long time. The images are fantastic. No vignetting at 15.5mm in 4k. No breathing , and I really mean it, when pulling focus.
I intercut them with my Cooke Mini S4's with no problem. And they are available now.
Cheers.

Hey no worries Jeff, I know you are really busy and it's asking a lot. Thanks for whenever you get a chance to put them up.

Best.

Will, I'm trying to get some shots I can share. I know it's taking forever, but will let you know.

My mistake, I thought you were living and worked with the guys at RED in LA.

This makes buying you that beer a little more difficult but I'll catch you at one of these trade shows someday soon.

It would be much easier for you to rent them locally in CA. The cost of FedEx and extra insurance for the trip there and back would probably cost the same as a day or two of rental. I don't know about out there, but these lenses rent here locally for $275/day each or about $525/day for the pair. I know because I rented them a bunch while I was waiting for mine to come in. So far, I'm the only one to use mine and I'm hoping to keep it that way! I'll get something posted soon.

Jeff,

Like the Alura's, these are the same size and weight? No need to move the MB swing away or Follow focus?

To each their own. I have to agree with Evin, the Optimo DP's have a more cinematic feel to them. And they're such a nice size and weight. This is my go-to lens kit for most everything.

The Optimos are nearly identical in size. Difference is that the 30-80 is about 4.5mm shorter. It's inconsequential though, mattebox is happy staying put. I prefer the RED MB or the ARRI LMB-5 anyway with most of my setups. Small, light... When it comes to filters or anything else in the optical path, i'm a firm believer in the less is more philosophy.

Still not getting anywhere on rounding up permission for footage posting. Anything you want to see specifically? I'm just going to grab some shots of random things over the next couple days.

I'm a proud new owner of the 30-105, and I have say that I love this lens! It's not quite an Optimo, but it's close in terms of how it renders skin tones and faces. I have to agree with Mitch. It's very sharp, a little warm. I used it on a week long job, all steadicam, and it performed like a dream. The extra bump you get in focal lengths from 80-105 compared to the competition is really worth considering. I didn't feel the need to change lenses all day. I think the Aluras are overrated. A little too sterile for me. I think folks are swayed by the Arri stamp on the side more than how the lens actually performs. Some friends and I tested the 30-105 against the DP rouge 30-80 , Optimo 15-40, The Alura 30-80, The Cabrio 19-90 (not a fan) and some Zeiss ZE primes. The Canon came in just behind the Optimos, if not next to, and the availability and extra focal lengths, along with the stellar mechanics of the 30-105 sold me on it. It was a skeptic before this test and now I'm a huge 30-105 fanboy. It's a serious workhouse. It equals or outperforms lenses twice it's price.

You might also consider new Zeiss CZ 28-80mm T2.9 FULL FRAME zoom. It is under $20,000.

Have you looked at the 19 – 90 Cabrio? I recently shot on it and had a great experience. We did notice some breathing while zooming but if you're looking for A lwz which basically serves as an alternative to primes where you don't have to change lenses and can reframe quickly, I personally like the availability of the wider focal lengths.

What do you mean Breathing while zooming? like it loses focus? Thats a back focus issue. You can adjust on the camera or on the Cabrio itself.

I own a Cabrio 19-90. Cant say enough good stuff about it. But it is almost 40K.

I agree on the gorgeous look of the angie...but which one has less breathing?

Angie DP 30-80
Canon 30-105
Alura 30-80
Zeiss 28-80 (I assume its full frame design is not the best to minimize breathing...)

??
anyone who tried 'em all? ;)

I think this said it all, at least for me. I have also heard wonderful things about this lens, from a lens expert I know. He said this one, and the sister 30-300 are much better built than the angies (24-290), and very comparable in image. He said Canon hit a home run with these two. I was waiting for the Zeiss 28-80 mostly because of being able to swap mounts, but now Canon announced that for about $1,000 they will swap the mounts of these lenses, which means to me that if one day i find myself without a PL camera any more, I don't have to get rid of these lenses, I can just put them on my C300s. Plus I think they have a $1,000 discount plus a 24mo 0% lease going on right now.
I am still curious about the 28-80, we don't know how it is going to be, but Zeiss is usually more clinical than Angenieux or Canon glass.
The Rouges are great, sure, but the thingy in the back ruins it for me because I have an F65, and that camera has a mechanical shutter.

Dont quote me on this but I believe I heard Paul Duclose say they were working on a lens mount for the Canon zooms that will make the system quick change from PL to Eos, Nikon, etc, like the old century system for telephoto's.

I haven't done a side by side or anything like that yet, but the Zeiss CZ 28-80mm that I played with at NAB was ruthlessly sharp. Extremely impressive. I went over the stills I grabbed from it and I don't think it looks really like the Optimos, the Canons, or the Fujinon. It's something different on it's own.

The one Canon 30-105mm I saw and tested was pretty impressive.
