  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

One Scarlet owners upgrade dilemma

I remember that quote from Jarred but that doesn't say if there is a "scarlet" weapon. There will be at least 2 weapons for sure, one carbon and a non-carbon one. That can be what he meant. One less pricey than the other. As we shouldn't have had any upgrade for the scarlet dragon in the future originally, he also announces that there will be one finally. But, imho, the fact that he clearly separates the 2 infos in that sentence means no scarlet dragon.

We'll find out for certain in a about a month (or less, maybe) but I think you're wrong for the simple fact that Jarred bothered to respond to your post. Why say anything if what you were worried about were true?

If he meant what you think he did, he basically confirmed what you originally said in the guise and form of correcting your assertion, which doesn't make much sense to me. It would be a very odd way of saying you were correct, no?

I think he answered the way he did in order to address two separate points of confusion running rampant on Reduser:

1) Yes, there's more than one Weapon model. I happen to believe this includes an entry-level model.

2) Yes, your Scarlet Dragon is upgradeable to any one of them (contrary to popular belief that Scarlet Dragon was ineligible for any further upgrades - you still can't upgrade to Epic Dragon, though).

Simple, quick question for this that have upgraded to Dragon: does your camera keep the same serial number or is it given a new one? Just curious.
 
Keeps the same serial number if it's new Dragon guts going into your current Scarlet/Epic body.
 
I tested versions of epic (mys/dragon) before i invested in my scarlet dragon. my perception after testing was that epic dragon only gave me frame rates and a bit more resolution, things that i could easily rent, should i bump into the moment i needed them. however, the difference of the dragon vs mys sensor was VAST... and the option to tweak olpf made the difference even more apparent. i will be at NAB, and i will put my name down for weapon if it allows me to make a better image. im a very happy scarlet dragon owner. and I'm sure i will be a happy weapon owner. :)
 
Thanks to everyone that gave input. It was very interesting to hear all the feedback, experiences, and opinions. After a lot of debate I finally decided to move to a Scarlet Dragon. I then took the extra cash and put it towards a set of cinema lenses. I think it will be a great move for my personal business. I'll get all the color benifit of Dragon, a useful FPS upgrade, stay in the upgrade path, and update past the limits of my Canon L glass. Overall I am extremely happy. Still really impressed with Red for rolling back the upgrade price.
 
I just sent in my Epic that I upgraded too from my scarlet... about a month ago. Ouch! In for a penny, in for a pound!

Just rapped my first shoot with the Upgraded Camera. I am very pleased with the upgrade. Almost entirely positive. The skin tones and highlight roll off are amazing. No surprise there. Everyone has praised that to death. The noise is now very organic feeling, and the image really has a much more filmic quality to it. The one "surprise" was just how much light the camera wants to expose. Used the Skin tone highlight OLPF at ISO 400 and we were shooting entirely on the RED 18-85. We lived almost wide open the whole time. We got beautiful images, but it is so different from MX in this regard. Would love to hear everyone thoughts, especially those who moved from scarlet to scarlet dragon recently.
 
From talking to Dragon owners, it seems the low-light OLPF is needed most of the time to prevent noisy low-light performance. Skin tones are still an improvement over MX (I'm told).
I hope Weapon addresses the low-light performance.
 
There is absolutely nothing I miss in going to Dragon from MX.

I've found the STH OLPF doesn't really present that much of an issue in low light if a) you're not hyper-adverse to any amount of texture whatsoever (this excludes those who pixel-peep 6K footage 10 inches from the screen at 100% magnification), b) your subject is exposed properly and c) you develop at the same iSO you shot with, or maybe 1/3 to 1 stop over, depending on the shot.

Most problems I've seen from people who've posted on Reduser is they underexpose by several stops and then try to raise the ISO in post. They're trying to make a dimly lit scene look like a well lit one and are disappointed at the results.

You can intentionally shoot in very dark conditions and, as long as you want the scene to be dark, noise won't really be a factor. Then again, I like a little texture in my images, so there's that.
 
Completely agree with this. I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't good in low light, just that it wanted more light than I expected. I will keep the STHL olpf on the camera 90% of the time. Looks great, and the texture is excellent. I would say that it is a great low light camera. It just isn't magic. You do have to do some lighting.

Paid for the upgrade of my Scarlet today.
Rolling back the price, before NAB, with a "warning" about discounts for Weapon-upgrades... It's just impossible to let this pass.
 
Yep! Sent RED $9500 today, and I'm totally stoked to hand over my cash! :001_tt1:
 
In the process right now. No pain, no gain. Can't wait! :tongue_smilie:
