Why do I sense that there is one more big announcement RED is going to make during this NAB ?

I am positive the announcements are not over.

In an homage to Steve Jobs style, "by the way, there is one more thing....."

The big one is coming. I can feel it.

Jarred? Keeping secrets? Naaahh...

I think we've seen all there is for this year, which is a lot of a cool stuff if you ask me!

I don't know David... This is a lot for them, when you keep in mind their new announcement:release plan. My sense is that they could have doubled the size of their booth if they put out a bunch of prototypes that are 9-12 months out, but they don't do that any more. Clean room installations on the NAB show floor should really drive the idea home; Red doesn't just promise a lot of crazy shit. Red delivers.

:-)

I think the clean room was a brilliantly inspired idea that totally sells the image makeover. Bravo Red marketing!

I like the new global shutter / ND mount... Thats a winner for me. :) if they dont present anything else.

Dragon is cool.. but, Im already getting awesome pics from my current sensor... Will probably upgrade for the hell of it.

Pro res module wasn't worth realeasing... Sadly.

After looking at all other cameras launched over the last few days.... I feel that we still have the best camera in the market place, when it comes to SIZE, PERFORMANCE & PRICE.
Thanks Red.

(PS) the 4k BMC is pretty cool for the money.

I have not seen one photo or heard anything about the projector! I'll bet that they release the projector with footage from the Dragon :)

I bet you are right, but I'm thinking that the projector is in a holding pattern while ODEMAX gets up to speed.

Maybe it's something they are shooting during NAB...

still, I'm thinking there is a bit more...

Wouldn't that be the most inept marketing ever? All the major press attention is focused on the first day or so, and everyone announces/press releases on the first day. If you want to make a splash, you do it when everyone is looking it on the first day. And they did make a splash with the Dragon clean room.

If they've got something else big, they will wait a month or two til things calm down, and then throw it out there.

I don't know. You don't save news at a tradeshow. Too many key buyers (and press) only come the first day.

Steve Jobs never let the reporters leave the room before saying "One More Thing".

I still think there will be a late nugget.

Dont know why. Exactly, probably because it makes no sense.

When I saw the prores module was 1080p only and didn't actually use the contacts/modularity of the camera (making it objectively less enticing than the Pix, since the pix has sweet-sweet audio and a display and uses non-proprietary media and is essentially 2/3rds the cost when you factor in having to get a mini-mags and reader), I knew Toia wouldn't be too pleased.

I like the motion mount in theory, but I don't like the stop-loss associated with it (Phil said when turned off you lose 1 to 1.5), which basically takes the edge off of Dragon's improvements. Not good. Plus, for less than the cost of the mount you can get an entirely shootable 4k/raw camera with global shutter... why would someone pay so much when they can have a crash/b-cam/globalshuttercam for less $$ for those shots where rolling shutter and strobe are an issue?

The Fan 2.0 module bothers me more though; $450 to fix what many consider a design flaw? Yes, I realize that film cameras were loud too, but, uhh... this isn't film, it's solid state with no moving parts... Besides, RED, we know fans cost ~$8 each... 3x$8 = $24, not $450. Remember when you fixed the R1's sound boards for free? Yeah, well, this issue should have been treated like that.

I hope there is something more from RED this year. All of the announcements feel like 'two steps forward, one step back' to me... very incremental when compared to competitors making leaps (admittedly due to their transition to 4k/raw). I'm hoping the reason they haven't shown Dragon footage isn't a colour science one, but because they're going to be like, 'OH and by the way, Dragon does depth mapping' or 'single lens 3D' or '3 more stops natively....ABOVE the 18 of HDRx'... Something unquestionably better than anything the competition even has in the pipeline that will be relevant for the next camera generation (not something that barely edges out the F65 or Alexa).

Personally, I see BM releasing a FF35 6k for $5k next year, and it makes me think paying $9500 now for Dragon isn't worth it. I don't see Dragon earning me an additional $9500 over what MX will in the next 12 months (especially if the Scarlet-D turn-around doesn't happen for another 1/2 year.)

I'm sorry David, but I have to disagree on your idea that something big is coming. Dragon NOW is the big RED announcement. They announced it some time ago, and wanted to have it out in 2012. So this for RED imho is the most important news.
That's why the clean room is there: No empty talk about it, but REAL work being done!

To me the most exciting - because we already knew about Dragon coming - was the Motion Mount and then in no particular order: the new Quickplate stuff (incl. the XL battery plate) + RED's Element Technica acquisition and also that ODEMAX is alive and working hard to get it right.

We are still waiting on the Scarlet Dragon Details, but it doesn't make sense to keep anything big hidden for after monday. Key people are often only there for 1 or 2 days.
As much as I'd like more news, I would say: don't get your hopes up too much.

Better image quality and high fps?

Touche. And built-in NDs... I guess what I should have said was, without seeing either in action, I'm highly skeptical that it's worth it... Also, I'm talking in terms of Scarlet more than Epic.... so it really doesn't have higher quality or FPS since both would be ~12stops, 4k, at 30fps max... Oh, and the motion mount is scheduled* for fall, whereas BM ProdCam is scheduled* for Early Summer...

*I take the word "scheduled" with a huge helping of salt from both companies.
