  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK Redmote.... I dont like you... you dont like me...

As I have said in a probably hundred posts before: If your REDmote doesn't work well, work at getting it right; do what it takes. Mine has always worked extremely well and it is a joy to have it as an alternative for controlling the camera. Your going to let this tiny piece of kit defeat you? :-)

I told you man... it's KRYPTONITE! I'm defeated! ;)
Cheers,
Harry

Having the same issue, cant for the life of me, get a connection to my redmote and upgrade the firmware.
Turned off all wifi and ethernet connections, tried the upgrade utility, simply wont work :(

Update it through / attached to the camera.

When upgrading to the latest build, I don't understand the instructions:

"Start REDmote Upgrade Utility and upgrade."

Does this mean double click on "redmote.1.bin"?

Because all that does is open up "redmote.1.bin.cpgz"

and keeps going on and on...

I thought I saw some video where Ted was showing how you could use your Ipad or Iphone to control the camera. That was like two years ago. Has that been canned?

Like others I had several frustrating experiences with the RedMote early on and just gave up on it.

I got the antenna upgrade kit last week so I will install that this weekend. Then I will spend up to 2 hours making sure it is running the latest firmware, that I understand how to use it and test real world range. Hopefully that will result in my joining the RedMote fan club, it sure has the potential to be very handy on set.

it's crazy to me that the camera does not have an interface/ control built into it. Every camera's shutter speed and frame rate control (at the very least) should be built into the body in my opinion. Then if you need a smaller body for 3D...that should be the specialty body.

I guess what you're meaning is that you need the LCD, redmote or sidehandle to operate it?

YES!!...any failure in the corresponding cable, device or connection with the devices you mentioned and you're in trouble. So far, the LCD has not let me down, though, and I must carry spare EVF cables. However, the time it takes to pull the cable from the LCD and put it into the EVF has caused me to miss shots often...or be too worried about missing a shot (i needed to execute quickly) to change to the desired shutter speed, frame rate or ASA when i really wanted to. Don't want to add the weight, size and power needs of the I/O on most shoots (just to have both EVF and LCD)...and I don't believe the plus 1 adapter is available yet. The side handle would be a good option, but reduces the mounting options of a more ergonomic and comfortable handheld grip. About one out of every four times I re-plug the EVF/ LCD cable, i get the color chip chart stuck in the eyepiece and need to re-plug or re-boot. In a documentary or sports coverage situation that can add up to missed shots. Can you think of any other camera out there (other than a lipstick camera) that doesn't have a way to control the camera functions built into the camera body?

Obviously if the side handle is attached you do have a way to control everything from the camera body so you have voluntarily elected to remove that capability.

IAC, I keep hoping that we will see an evolution in the side handle design that would make it possible to mount it to a rosette on a hand held rig with a short cable going to a modified side plate rig that replaces the regular cover plate. Some guys posted pictures and notes on RedUser about a custom rig for doing what I am describing but I have no idea how robust it is or if it could cause warrantee issues.

BTW, are you saying that using the RedMote hard mounted to the back is still no good or do you have that space occupied by a V-mount battery interface?

Back of the camera is where the batteries go on my camera.

Dusting off this old thread... are folks still finding their RedMotes unreliable, or is it just me? Mine works well when I test it at home (low noise environment for wireless). On the occasions where I've been brave enough to try it on location, it always lets me down. I've updated firmware, installed the updated antennae, waved the RedMote around encouragingly, cursed at it to show it who's boss... it just seems determined to sporadically drop signal, regardless of proximity to the camera. Should I call in the bomb squad, or is this just an accepted caveat of an otherwise outstanding camera?

I recently noticed I get an audio interference noise as soon the Redmote is Wifi connected, find this issue with both cameras, so in case you plan to use the cameras audio recording and use a high input sensitivity I´d like to suggest to thoroughly test the setup.

Tim, it's not just you. My redmote has ben serviced twice and still fails to hold a reliable connection. It also freezes up and occasionally will not power up at all until put on about 12 hours of charge. It has made me wonder - is this why the Meizler module is so delayed? Could it be the guys at red couldn't get all those insane wireless promises to work properly? Did they abandon those ideas in favor of a complete redesign? What about that iPad app? Nowhere to be found.

Redmote has NEVER worked properly for me nor ANYONE I have personally spoken with. I ask all the assistants I work with around the U.S.- New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Charlotte, Austin, Nashville, Washington, D.C., Vancouver, Seattle, the list goes on and on and not one person I have asked has had a reliable experience with this piece of crap device. I wish red would admit that the redmote is a d.o.a. device and fix it for real with a version 2.0.
