  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK Redmote.... I dont like you... you dont like me...

I think Johnny is on to something, your RM firmware is really old, you might have to take some steps to get it up to date a bit more before you can even use the latest upgrade utilities or docking updating techniques.
Love my RM on a jib, for timelapses, UW housings etc. Maybe we shouldnʻt trash the concept of a remote control altogether here. That being said, if you decide to throw it in the dustbin Iʻll send you my shipping info ;-)

With everyone complaining about the Redmote...

Once it's up and running, with the upgraded antenna etc, it works brilliantly.

I was recently on a shoot with the camera on a huge crane all day. The Redmote worked perfectly all day. While the Arri remote focus I had in my other hand, kept losing connection and was a pain. The Arri WCU-3 is a $33000 system, so I was surprised that the $550 Remote had much better range.

I love my Redmote!

How about just docking it to your RED? It will install the latest firmware for you without the hassle of using a computer.

Timur after turned off the wifi in your mac- go to the Network preferences and choose the red mote. After that you can open the red mote utility and you can celebrate because it's so easy after that.
Cheers from Brazil

I am pretty sure that only works if your REDmote firmware is already updated to a certain level. Timur's f/w seems to be a really old one.

Redmote is a super cool idea. Nobody I know likes it in practice. It just isn't a reliable piece of gear.

I feel bad for everyone who is having a problem with RM. I might be the only one but I have never had even a little problem with mine and I love being able to use it on crane, or from across the room. I'd urge people not to give up. If you can get it to work, it is terrific.

I used to have the same problem installing updates with my REDmote. That was the easy way of fixing it. The only other way I was able to install updates was using a completely different computer. It seemed to be a problem how the computer got the wifi signal.

10-4 on that...no problems now after new antenna upgrade and the new upgrade utility....years ago however it was a pain. A very solid piece of gear now...i use underwater as well as above water and works beautifully. I'm sure once you guys having bad luck upgrade to latest firmware and antenna upgrades you'll see the difference.

I agree with Terry, for jib/motion_control/motion_capture work the redmote rules. I think the redmote seemed a lot more connection stable and the overall ease of use started working much better for me about two releases back, and that autoupdate feature (so it just updates when you hook it to your camera) works flawlessly.

I jump through too many hoops to get that thing to work.

In regards to pro gear, choose your reason:
"because it's leading edge technology, you can't whine that it should work 100% of the time"
and
"100% reliability and consistency is what separates the pros from the boys."

This thing is killing me....

What am i missing? How do you get it to connect to the computer app to update....

Its plugged in, charged, and just sitting there like a symbol of my technologic failure.... mocking me.... saying "rescan?"

Its currently on Firmware version: 2.0.13 trying to update it.

Johnny, how hard was the Antenna upgrade to do ... my mote signal starts fading about after 10 feet.

I also use it quite effectively for the rack focus function!

The first time I had to upgrade firmware on the RedMote I pulled my hair out for several hours. Once I sorted it out it has been fantastic ever since. Problem is "sorting it out" is different for each person, but once you do you will be fine, especially if new updates happen automatically through the camera.

Keep fighting with it, well worth it in the end.

For me the answer was turning off wi-fi and entering both the IP address and subnet, conneting multiple times. Fininally it worked and I could connect every time.

Hy Jim,

Ok what the hell does "entering both the IP address and subnet, conneting multiple times" mean? I speak computer bad.

Does anyone who hates their redmote want to sell it to me? I currently have a side handle that I drag out to every shoot in case my touch lcd goes down, but I have thankfully never had to use it. I can't imagine putting that thing on my camera, and I'd much rather sell my side handle (for $800, never used) and have the cheaper redmote.

Heh, fair enough.

Maybe there is something in this thread that will spark something:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?78457-Redmote-won-t-complete-upgrade-connection

Basically you have to connect the USB, then go to System Prefs/Network.

Turn off Airport (this may kill your internet until you turn it back on after upgrading)

For Ethernet 1 and 2 you may choose to switch from USING DHCP to OFF (this will kill your internet until you turn it back on after upgrading)

You should see REDMOTE in the list. Select it and change USING DHCP to MANUALLY.

Change the IP Address to 192.168.0.1

Change the Subnet Mask underneath to 255.255.255.0

Click APPLY in the bottom right, this should connect.

Then run the firmware upgrade app downloaded from Red.

After it's done, be sure to turn your Ethernet and Airport back on so you can go back online.

If this is all too weird, find a friend to do it for you, it's not nearly as scary as it looks, just takes patience.
