I'm still waiting to make an affirmative decision. I think seeing some dragon footage at 5K is going to be a big determining factor on which path I take. I'd like to see some low light tests of Dragon. I want to see how the dynamic range performs. I'd also like to know what the max fps will be at 4K, all we know is 60fps at 5K but how many fps at 4K? I'd like to know, and I'd like to see. I'd much rather make an informed purchase decision than rush for a higher que on the waiting list. I figure there's more time to wait on dragon because we may not have immediate support in CS6, or DaVinci, in which case I'd rather shoot with my Scarlet as is.

Subject to change, but the Scarlet D tech specs have all the WS max frame rates printed.

Thanks Doug, didn't realize this was posted already. I think I was a little hopeful that 4K would have more than 75 fps at 4K. I was hopeful it would be somewhere in the lines of at least 100 fps. That's somewhat disappointing. As much as people say high fps is played out, or overrated, I consider that nonsense. A lot of us indie guys shoot lots of music videos where high fps seems integral. Almost all music videos incorporate some sort of high frame rate, which has always bothered me about the Scarlet. 3K on Dragon will have 100fps but I hate the look of S16, that's one of those things that I can't get over on the BMC cams is that S16 look. People only shoot shoot S16 for nostalgia or because they have no other choice. I'd still like to see some Dragon footage, but yeah that is pushing me over to an Epic.

So who ever gets contacted to send in their EPIC's first should let us all know incase RED doesnt make a big announcement :)

Scarlet X 1549 Neo upgrading to Epic X order placed 04.12.2013 SO-0095520

I feel this is the best route for me in the long run.

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing Jarred posting that BOTH the upgrade paths (Scarlet-D and Epic-MX) will begin in July...
i would love to see that quote.....i have read all announcements again (and again) and there was nothing i saw.....the only mention of a time frame was that there would be a meeting after everyone came back from las vegas and things would be discussed then.....that was a week ago and if anything was discussed, i guess we are not supposed to know....
i just got booked a small job 3 weeks from now, i wish i would at least know which camera i will or won't have.....i am upgrading to epic, so i am not waiting for unproven tech...
my problem really is that i don't have 10K sitting around to spend when i get the email....i can get it together in a short time and i am obviously prepared but i can't set aside 10k for 3 months waiting....
and i am not desperate enough to just put it in my red account until someone is gracious enough to take it....

I would love to upgrade my cam to scarlet D... I just cant justify the investment for most of my work. Yeah it would be nice for the stills on my fashion work, but I'm already churning out awesome stuff with it... and the DP's I work with are churning out even better. Its a tuff pill to swallow for me when RED one can shoot Academy nominated films and be projected in 4k and look amazing to really justify needing a new sensor at the moment. 9 megapixel stills are great for printing even billboard size ( given the viewing distance, same with watching movies )and there is always uprising... I know that word should never be used, but we have had to do it with our 3k slomo, and sometimes the upres looks sharper than the 4k ( I think this is baselight adding sharpening on the upres ). I can't wait to see footage though from the Dragon I bet this beast is gonna make me wish I had an extra 10k laying around. Guess Ill be renting a brain and using all my accessories when I need to.

Red Dragon: Crop Factors, Dimensions, and Diagonals

Scarlet MX Max FPS (w/ crop factor)
12 fps 5K FF (1.3)
30 fps 4K FF (1.62)
48 fps 3K FF (2.17)
60 fps 2K WS (3.25)
120 fps 1K WS (5.51)

Scarlet Dragon Max FPS
(w/ crop factor)
60 fps 5K WS (1.4)
75 fps 4K WS (1.76)
100 fps 3K WS (2.35)
150 fps 2K WS (3.52)
N/A fps 1K WS (5.54)

I'm interested to see how much the noise floor is reduced in Dragon vs. MX, as it will help you as you crop closer in on the sensor for higher fps. I'm also really interested to see what the max FPS will be for FF acquisition.

I got good results shooting daylight 1KHD at 90 fps on MX, but it would have been much nicer to shoot 90 fps at 3K, essentially doubling my field of view.

what is going on with the scarlet to epic upgrade?
i really don't understand why there is no announcement either way....the silence is annoying...epics are available to buy, so that should not be a problem....or at least let us know that the swap will start in 4, 8, 12,...weeks....

I and a lot of us are the same boat as you. But it's a little more complicated then just switching the brains out for us. And I would assume they are putting 90% of their work into finishing Dragon and getting ready to handle not just scarlet to epic-x upgrade but every other dragon option they offer to work smoothly at the same time. Theres like 5,500 epics and 6,000 scarlets and everyone wants a upgrade. i would expext that we prob won't hear anything about the upgrade until dragon is ready, ready. Until then it's nov. 3rd all over again.

You guys also realize that your scarlet have to go through an evaluation right? There are still many logistics to consider. It's not going to be as simple as swapping cameras.
i understand that the "swap" requires an evaluation before the epic is shipped out....i also understand that things are a bit crazy right now at red because dragon is being finished off....
but: the epics are sitting there....i am not sure if it helps to ad the straight "swaps" to the dragon upgrade madness in summer....somehow it makes a lot more sense to me to get all (not in any way) dragon related things out of the way to have a "clear desk" when dragon actually starts shipping....
i guess i don't understand why it is easier to give the dragon updates an approximate date then to give the epic swaps one....

What do we know about this evaluation process? I heard from my bomb squad rep that any repairs will be deducted from the trade-in amount - which makes sense. But the question is what kind of repairs will be done. Assuming the camera is 100% functional, could I still be on the hook for expensive repairs to make it appear "brand new" for example?

We can assume they're putting all their efforts into getting Dragon 100%, and getting ready for the influx of cameras. It would be unwise of them to start receiving scarlets, possibly thousands, before they've perfected what will now be their flagship cameras. Scarlet to Epic X is not a priority when the whole online community is screaming for dragon footage.

We are also assuming there is a stock pile of Epic-x cameras sitting around. I hope there is. As for The inspection/evaluation process, it may be using the same assembly line as the dragon upgrades which would be a serious bottleneck.
