• Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What's that wreck, some wooden bark?

@ Mark, yeah, I've played with some of the UW pics some more. Most didn't turn out to be anything good. I couldn't see the rear LCD with the camera in the housing and I just had to eye it and hope for the best and I left it at auto ISO with a shutter priority of 1/160. Seems most of my shots came out rather dark and noisy. No filtering, so everything is excessively blue and dull. A B&W treatment on the image does look good. Don't need to add any noise, it's noisy enough! :) I'll tweak it up a bit better and post another when I get a chance. It has a real nice old-timey look to it.

@ Petr, the wreck is the Carthaginian. It's a steel-hulled ship from the early 1900's. I'm not sure of the complete history of the ship, but it was only sunk there recently to spawn an artificial reef. It's kinda hard to dive around it because the local tourist industry swarms the thing with submarine and snuba excursions. The ship is sunk a couple miles SSW of Lahaina, Maui. The location was chosen because it was shallow enough for novice divers and bare sandy bottom, out of the way of most boat traffic, etc.. And the touristy dive thing is what we were doing anyway, family trip and all...

Delicate Arch last night:

Liam, yes, it was a 65% moon.

Kalani, thats a great shot! Contax lenses are among the best ever made. I almost purchased a used Contax a while back (the one with the ceramic base) but it was a little out of my price range. What camera did you have the lens mounted on?

I had it on the 5D2 : ) I'm lovin these old Contax lenses, well built and inexpensive.

'Satisfaction'

'Satisfaction'

I guess is the only title that fits this shot. Playing around with water a lot recently, have some killer water drop imagery. This is as shot using milk and food coloring.

Cheers,
Mark.

Tapestry Arch, Arches National Park, Utah. This frame is part of a 571-frame 3-axis moco dolly timelapse sequence we shot last night.

http://tinyurl.com/StairwayArch

Canon 5D Mark II, EF 16-35mm II at 16mm f/3.2, ISO 3200 for 33 seconds.

It was taken with a Canon 40D; avaible light reflected from a large white wall across the street from the window in front of the subject. This was shot at 1/13 sec, f.6.3, ISO400 with the camera firing at 6.5fps. The secret to getting great shots with the 40D in low available light, stopped-down, is the fast frame rate. You end up with lots and lots of blurred shots, but one of them is nearly always razor-sharp. It's a great camera with incredible speed for its price point.

So true! That's just one of many reasons why I'm so excited about the Epic.

Tobias and Kalani, those are pretty epic. Tobias, what's glacier is that? Is it really dirty with sediment? Kalani, what lens? Did you use a multiplier?

Tobias, that's an incredible shot. Can you share some more tech info? I'm going to be shooting up in Alaska in a few weeks for a PSA spot and hope to do some night-shots at the Portage Glacier. Problem is is that due to time-restraints, I'll be shooting time-lapse segments with a 5D and a 40D, the 40D being rig I'm not so fond of.

Tobias, great shot. Does seem over-sharpened though. Black ringing around some of the stars!.?

Tom, love that shot of the milky way from under the arch. What did you light it with? LED lantern/flashlight?

I used a little eGear LED camping lantern (dimmable) wrapped in an off-white pillow case to defuse the light and warm it slightly.

Thanks Roberto. That's the Pers glacier, and yes, there's sediment everywhere, but it's not as bad as it might look on the picture. Just what you'd expect from a glacier. Here's a picture from another timelapse, daytime...

Thanks Joe. Shot on a 5D MK II, 16 - 35mm @ 20mm, f/3.2, ISO 640, exposure time 15 seconds. We had a full moon, so this was somewhat special, normally I have longer exposure times with higher ISO. Alaska sounds great, do share some pictures when you're back...

Thanks Jeff, and yes you are right, I did overdo it with sharpening, heheh... The final image does look a bit different.
