  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OFFHOLLYWOOD OMOD Modules for RED WEAPON

Chill out a little bit guys... they'll be ready when they're ready. Great products are never easy or predictable to produce.

Mark, do you have any comment about the OMODs at this time? Do you have working production units to show/demo?

Eric - I have many comments later today when OMOD.io goes live and we start taking pre-orders. I just wanna take a break and hit the gym, whip up a little FAQ and then I'll take the site live and I hope all of our questions will be answered.

There are working pre-production units and have been for a while. But it all takes time, tons of time. Firmware, software, testing, changes, more changes. I have worked harder in the last year than the total of the rest of my 49 years on this planet combined. I didn't go for the low hanging fruit - I went for a very forward thinking roadmap - a system architecture we can build on.

The first batch of production units are going to the early adopters in March ahead of NAB as well as being tested for some large studio projects.

I'll post in this thread when the OMOD.io is live - it better be before 8PM EST. Today.

Mark's been really communicative about progress! He basically went back to the drawing board, so it's a broader and more ambitious set of products than was envisisged for 2015.

The Final working units with our tech inside were together about 3 weeks ago... Now approved and in full production :)

Wish I could pre order the XLR module...

The ONLY reason you can't yet - is that I don't have the final board to approve yet. The moment I have it - and have it validated and approved by the audio experts I trust (Gotham Sound) - we start taking orders on all OMODs with the pro audio. The engineers who are doing the audio board for OMOD are some of the most seriously respected guys in the audio world based in the UK - so, I do expect the board to be awesome - but that is also why I don't have it already - these guys are not going to give me the thing until it's to spec and we set the spec WAY higher that the consumer audio chip level stuff that is in 90% of the cameras out there :)

That's fair. Good job on all the variations. There's something for every taste :)

I love this. Worth the wait.

Hi Mark,

Are you still thinking one of these will support Arri wireless handset?

And the big fish: any chance we support a Preston FIZ???

Nice work

you should remove the sound part from the non+ module though. it's misleading.
Professional in-camera audio features including push to operate controls, high pass filters, per channel line / mic level control and Phantom power (+48v). LEDs for level metering and peak warning indicators.

I'm sorry I will focus on the can't part of the OMOD, but It's a great system, and I probably get one or two.

- Am I right to say we don't have any audio input on the non+ module ? or is it the two slots on top withouth any indications ?
I never use sound in XLR, but I do use wireless audio receivers in mini jacks.

- There seems to be no dedicated power outputs, do you plan to have some on the v and gold mount themselves ? Right now it seems, I can't plug a TVlogic without batteries.
Or does the R/S port have proper Voltage/Amperage ?

- There is no on/off switch on the TX ? If I want to save batteries, I have to unplug the module ? I can't be a pain with top plates on set.

- There is no power buffer for switching batteries ?

- Weapon seems to disconnect the HDMI port when two Red displays are plugged. How does the Omod (3 outputs modules) function ? Do we have 2 Reds, + 3 SDI out simultaneously ?
You already partially answered that, but it's now buried, and others can be interested.

The OMOD CVOLUTION uses the same "white radio" that was co-developed by cmotion and ARRI - so ... the hardware is in place in OMOD CVOLUTION for use with ARRI WCU4. But ARRI would have to "turn the key" to let it work. We have not asked them yet, but plan to ask them at NAB when a working unit is in the cmotion booth and other booths. I suspect I can motivate them to offer a "paid license" to activate the WCU4 - but it's up to ARRI and I'm gonna wait until NAB to campaign them to make it happen.

I doubt Preston would ever play ball - but it would simply be a matter of them selling us an OEM version of their controller board based on a DXF file with specific headers for power and serial and motors.

I'll clean that up to make it more clear.

Right now, the non+ or XLR OMODs do not have any external audio input - you are limited to scratch audio with DSMC2 internal scratch mics.

- There seems to be no dedicated power outputs, do you plan to have some on the v and gold mount themselves ? Right now it seems, I can't plug a TVlogic without batteries.
Or does the R/S port have proper Voltage/Amperage ?
The R/S is a PWR+R/S and provides power for your TVlogic or CineTape, etc. - our battery modules in development have more LEMO and Fischer connectors for aux power as well.

- There is no on/off switch on the TX ? If I want to save batteries, I have to unplug the module ? I can't be a pain with top plates on set.

Lemme check on that.

- There is no power buffer for switching batteries ?
We are doing power buffer hot swap cells in our battery modules.

- Weapon seems to disconnect the HDMI port when two Red displays are plugged. How does the Omod (3 outputs modules) function ? Do we have 2 Reds, + 3 SDI out simultaneously ?

You can choose and route them how you want.

It takes the SDI monitor path from the DSMC2 brain (we call that Path A) and the HDMI monitor path from the DSMC2 brain (we call that Path B). You can route them how you want - each SDI output on the OMODs with 3 outputs is an INDIVIDUAL processed output - it is NOT a "DA" copy like others are doing. So, you can apply CDLs / 1D or 3D LUTS to them individually as desired - and even do HDR and SDR out live at the same time while shooting.

You can, for example - have one SDI routed to DIT that nobody sees and a different SDI out to video village for director and scripty. DIT can swing the color panel with reckless abandon - and when DIT is happy with the look - DIT can "push" that updated look to the monitor path going to video village - but nobody sees the DIT swinging the knobs over the live image.

You can choose to ignore the HDMI monitor path from the DSMC2 brain, which gives your both EVF/LCD outputs, and just work with three independent paths with the same gamma applying CDLs / 1D or 3D LUTS to them individually as desired - or - you can also take the HDMI from the brain (Path B) and it becomes another 10-bit SDI signal with re-embedded timecode. Now you can route Path A and Path B however you want between the three SDI outputs - but you do loose the EVF/LCD connector on the side of the DSMC brain when in that mode. We do have a clever solution that resolves this whole "loosing the EVF/LCD output on the side of the camera" when wanting to access HDMI monitor path - but that solution is not ready yet.

Thank you for all these answers. Too bad for the external in though. Good quality scratch track is useful.

The battery module is another module to add, or is it a "OMOD+battery module" module ? It's starting to get long

Battery modules attach directly to camera or OMOD - or any DSMC2 module - from RED or any 3rd party.
