  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OFFHOLLYWOOD HOTLINK + HOT TAP + HOTBOX R/S WIFI for RED DSMC cameras

Mmmm .... I think my HOT LINK is this case ... Tanks

Yeah, sounds like your HOTLINK has succumbed to the same fate as my first unit with a failed PCB; mine exhibited the same characteristics when plugged into camera or computer via USB. It'll need a trip back to OffHollywood, but they are super diligent and were able to turn mine around in no time. Best of luck.

I will be testing my repaired device more extensively this evening.

I just wanted to chime in here with some feedback on Mark and Mikael's efforts, as I've been using the Hotlink and Foolcontrol for the past 2 months now, on about 10 projects.

I've been using the Hotlink until my Hotbox arrives (which should be soon, which is awesome since I'm a tad frustrated it's been so delayed, if I'm just being completely honest), and in that time most of those projects have either involved EZ Rigs, Steadicams, Ultimate Arms, or Techno Cranes. Most recently the Hotlink/Dragon/Foolcontrol combo was used on a pair of commercials for a well known technology company, where we were either doing dolly work, locked off shots, or technocrane work, presenting the challenge of scrubbing footage, or changing settings on the fly when it would be inconvenient to climb up a ladder to work with the RED.

In full disclosure I'm not afraid of heights, but I am afraid of falling off things at great heights. So having worked with Jibs for years I absolutely HATE being 1st AC on crane jobs when it means scurrying up a tall ladder. So the fact that we could park my iPad AIR down on the technohead controls, and scrub footage easily, and toggle things like RAW look, or create curves for footage, was amazing. Here we had 100K in camera/optics attached to a 100K technocrane, and the thing that was blowing minds was the fact that we had full access to all the critical functions of the camera from an iOS device. By the end of the shoot this was the envy of the techno owners, DP, Director/Producers, etc.

The thing is, this kind of technology is a drag when it's not seamless. To me the REDMOTE was always a piece of gear you were fighting on set. When it worked well it was good, when it fought you it was a doorstop. Even when there was a hiccup in connections I was still able to start/stop the camera from my FIZ, so never once were we waiting on the Hotlink because it hiccuped. I would say that if you are going to use the system seriously, you owe it to yourself to buy a good wireless router, such as an ASUS or an Apple Airport Extreme. I've repurposed the previous generation Airport Extreme from a family member, and have it parked on my cart. I may at some point buy another Asus AC87U but I'm never THAT far away from the camera. Frankly the range from iPad to Hotlink is about 75-100', whereas with the Airport acting as a bridge the range is frankly just ridiculously long.

I'm interested to see how the HOTBOX compares. But the Hotlink/Foolcontrol has been so utterly impressive that it's paid for itself many times over. Foolcontrol isn't cheap, I love what Mikael has accomplished, in combination with Mark's hardware, and while I don't know if I can justify the 400 dollars for the OSX version, the iOS one is a bargain for what you get.

Simply put. I love it.

Well ... as the Bomb Squad used to say - better late than never. FINALLY - HOTBOX R/S units are starting to roll of the production line. It took a village. But we made a ton of tiny improvements and this is some serious kit designed for rental houses. Power distro, run / stop with ANY lens control system, timecode input, and wifi control.

Now we gotta push hard to get the HOTTAP 2 w/USB done and shipped to the poor folks who have waited forever.

HOTTAP 2 w/USB!!!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eeeeking out only a handful before XMAS to the very first folks.

But 1st production run ships units each week in January and will fill all existing orders and orders placed before the end of this year. I have to be very strict about shipping orders in the order in which they were placed since - since some folks waited way, way too long for these (they will all get a discount on the next product which works along side the HOTBOX or HOTTAP to provide HOTSWAP for power)

FYI - the HOTSWAP products we have in development (3 versions - 1) camera agnostic, 2) DSMC only, 3) a very special NAB 2015 BLOW YOUR MIND solution only for DSMC cameras) are crazy cool. But I learned a few lessons and I don't want the stress of taking peoples money and not hitting shipping targets - I'm not going to show HOTSWAP until all three models are done and actual production is starting.

Also - we are super close to closing a worldwide distribution deal for all of our products so that customers outside of the US can get these products from their favorite resellers around the world (UK, Germany, China, Japan, etc.) - so prices could shift, etc. - but I'll give everyone a heads up.

I'll be on email over the Holidays - any specific questions just email me direct - mark (at ) offhollywoodny.com

I'm not going to steal Mark's thunder, but I just got the shipping notification, I also got to see my unit with the laser engraved logo on it, and wow.

I'm so damn impressed with what Mark has designed.

I love that you ripped it out of the box and threw it onto a job in the middle of a shoot. Classic.

Order more :)

yes, will be ordering one for every camera.

Now we just need a device to get the HOTBOX and DSMC to play nice with VLCX batteries. But I have a feeling the HOTSWAP ...MAY... address that *cough* *cough*

Goddamn what an awesome accessory you've come up with in the HOTBOX, Mark.

Mark wasn't joking when he said R/S with ANY lens control system. Shit he even made it support the ET/RED system.

What a goddamn magician!

Will this work with my Bartech? I'm a little slow here, does it bridge my Bartech receiver and camera?
