  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OFFHOLLYWOOD DRAGON R3Ds & MORE

ISO 5000 looks pretty sick. And I'm a terrible colorist:

Keep in mind she's lit by an effing match. This is INSANE.

You guys should post some grades of these in this thread - motivate me to post even better stuff :)

I have Peter Henket coming in on Saturday to test and shoot some fun R3Ds for you guys play with -

Did a quick grade on the shot that my friend Jason was involved in. Can't wait to get more dragon footage through my grading suite! (Also can't wait for either GPU debayer or my RedRocket-X)

Time to throw out all the expensive lights and get a box of matches and some candles. :)

Great stuff, I'd love to get dragon time in while i wait for the X upgrades. Reach out if you have a testing day and need a set of hands.

Any chance to have a bit of motion in the clips of central park at night? I would like to get a sense of the grain and play around with noise removal.

Great stuff Mark...... THANKS!

Those shots have pretty janky focus and camera movement (it was freeeeeezing outside and we were tired) - I will post some solid 6K motion R3Ds of NYC night exteriors on Monday so you can evaluate.

wow. just. wow. - I must have watched the OffHollywood MX nighttime test dozens of times, it's what convinced me to buy my Red One. Onward to Dragon.

Brendan - that comment makes me very happy and it makes me want to share more.

Wait until Monday .... that's when I'm gonna get seriously 6K XMAS crazy on you :)

Mark! Glad to see you posting again. Thanks for putting these up, I'll have some fun pushing these around.

One overall personal observation/opinion I have on Dragon is that IF you shoot a lot of RED on MX sensor and you are really accustom to setting your exposure based on the histogram - you will need to reprogram your brain a bit for the added dynamic range. You need to expose for the Dragon. Not the MX. For example, pretty much all of the shots from the "These are shots of subjects with a single light source - part of an exposure/lens test by Michael Berlucchi." group of R3Ds were exposed exactly the same:

rated at 800
incident reading at subject with light meter
over expose one stop for skin tones

now, when doing that - you see lots of room on the right side of the histogram. MUCH more than you see on the MX. So ... it can throw you off a bit. When we shot that stuff - we opened iris up until the stop lights reported clipping and then backed off a bit - until the stop lights did not indicate any clipping - basically pushing histogram as far right as possible without clipping. That was 4 stops over the above described exposure method. The image appeared almost entirely blown out, yet when we pulled the ISO from 800 down to 50 - we had full detail in the faces and in fact, no clipping. You can't get anywhere close to that on the MX sensor.

So ... as I continue to test the camera and watch people who shoot every day for a living test the camera - I now officially have my #1 Dragon firmware feature request:

I want the ability to have the LCD touchscreen set to RAW all the time - meanwhile the SDI/HDMI outputs are RG3/RC3.

My logic for this is simple - the histogram that served us so well with the MX is just to limited for Dragon IMO. And your brain will always yank you to the right because you are just not use to so much room in the highlights.

You are better off testing and working with a light meter IMO - OR .... setting camera to RAW view and using false color meter which gives you much more information on what's happening than the histogram.

I need to test more to make sure I'm not totally nuts - but this is my instinct.

So if we can just leave the LCD on RAW - and tap a button to turn on false color ... without messing up directors monitor, etc. (SDI/HDMI output) - that would be the best IMO.
