  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

Over the long haul, we have a hard time believing anyone can stay with us in resolution, dynamic range and "feel". Now add easy post solutions, size and price.

That is not a trade-off, that is a duty!

Now you mean no trade-offs in relation to shooting non-HDR mode? Or no trade-offs in relation of what other cameras can offer?

Duty-free hopefully.

Graeme

Absolutely amazing story so far, can't wait to see the images and test charts!

Where does Scarlet fit in this picture? I was under the impression that Scarlet would have HDR mode as well and judging by Graeme's post, it sounds like we have to get Epic to do this? Can someone confirm or deny this assumption?

Would you like to make a bet it will be under-priced -whenever- you buy? :lurk5:

If I can bet on it being under-priced, sure

Part of me wishes I could afford a Red ONE, but they're relatively unwieldy for someone like me. Auto-focus, integrated-redmote-focus-pulling on Scarlet fixed even... RAWRRR.... :emote_happyhappy:

Tomorrow we're going to load Film into the minivan and drive it to a assisted living center in Miami Beach with instructions that it be kept off life-support. Then we'll cry. Happy tears... Happy tears...

Graeme's response was tongue in cheek... the over-analyzing of posts here is quite amusing.

Is it possible to implement HDRx on a R1MX? What kind of magic are you doing, software, hardware, a little of both? If it's sensor magic will the R1 be able to do it too, since it's the same sensor...

The more advanced REDcode in the new system is an important piece of the puzzle in order to be able to hold all the tremendous dynamic range.

Deanan,
Are you still at work ?
What time does Red expect you in the morning ?
Does everyone just show up at 12 noon
Or you guys all sleep in bunks...

Congrats, you guys are nuts and it's working

So let me add to the speculation of how the HDR mode works.

  • 13.1 million variable NDs, individually controllable, are placed on the sensor
  • The GPS data is linked to a military spec weather satellite that can extrude the current lighting condition and re-calculates the exposure values on a subpixel level.
  • Approx 170 iPhone camera sensors are used by hyper-beamsplitter, achieving the necessary resolution and dynamic range. (This also explains the scarcity of the iPhone)
  • Someone at RED has made a Deal with the Devil. (Apparently it's not that hard.)
  • During the recording of the HDR R3D file, nanosecond frames depicting the words "I am seeing 18 stops of latitude" are inserted. Fast enough so the eyes can't see it, long enough for the sub-conscience to notice. (Hey, it worked for Coke, didn't it?)
  • RED cloned Michael, replacing his brain (a reasonable assumption considering the level of technology RED is pushing out).
  • The sensor has two read-cycles for each frame; one to measure the color, one to measure the light level.
If I don't make another post within the next 24 hours, you know that I was right ;)

And Græme, I would love to buy you a Scotch, but the only one I know is Sean Connery and he is out of my price range... But if you come to Norway, you'll be treated to a fantastic Aquavit.

Actually, you got me there.... I did think of another - you'll have to buy me a good Scotch too.

Graeme
As a scoucer living in Scotland, you deserve a nice 21 year old Whiskey. Will pass one through when I am next over.

Congrats RED team!

Steve
