  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So let me add to the speculation of how the HDR mode works.

  • 13.1 million variable NDs, individually controllable, are placed on the sensor
  • The GPS data is linked to a military spec weather satellite that can extrude the current lighting condition and re-calculates the exposure values on a subpixel level.
  • Approx 170 iPhone camera sensors are used by hyper-beamsplitter, achieving the necessary resolution and dynamic range. (This also explains the scarcity of the iPhone)
  • Someone at RED has made a Deal with the Devil. (Apparently it's not that hard.)
  • During the recording of the HDR R3D file, nanosecond frames depicting the words "I am seeing 18 stops of latitude" are inserted. Fast enough so the eyes can't see it, long enough for the sub-conscience to notice. (Hey, it worked for Coke, didn't it?)
  • RED cloned Michael, replacing his brain (a reasonable assumption considering the level of technology RED is pushing out).
  • The sensor has two read-cycles for each frame; one to measure the color, one to measure the light level.
If I don't make another post within the next 24 hours, you know that I was right ;)

Now that you mentioned them, It makes perfect sense, why didn't I think of those?

I'm so happy right now with my non-MX Red... and lots here thought images we made with my dp were films, I'm eargerly waiting for stage II and our first movie with it...

about hdr.

Is there a reduced Hdr mode ? Can we choose not to get the whole stops ?
I'm mean, most time we won't t need the whole curve, and most time it's easier to let the audience feel something if we have a hard graded picture... and let too much room to the grading artist can be problematic for dp's...

18 stops is a lot, and it's great, but can I clip in a pretty nice way in post ? After seeing lots and lots of HDR stills, it's often difficult to read in still, so in motion....
I don't want HDR to be the new fashion way of making movies, it's a pure artistic tool, but I fear users, and not only young dp, will think lights won't be needed because of high dynamics...

Let me elaborate:

trade-off has to be resolution, that's why, while HDRx will be available on the Scarlet 2/3, you won't be able to get many extra stops from it.

I don't understand what you mean. That on scarlet there would be a hdr"image still mode" but not hdr"film mode"?

Can we have an answer if hdri filming is a feature for scarlet or if the plans have been cancelled? I want to congratulate the red team for the achievement and I hope we soon se some moving pictures!

Is the motion hdri a Epic only thing?

Congratulations Red. You guys aren't happy with just making great cameras. You're not happy with just making your customers so, so happy. You had to go and make history as well!

With 18 stops of DR and 18 stops of latitude for sure you'll get a Baraka style of images...
