  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

"Everybody knows that a thing is impossible to be realized, until one it arrives unprovided that doesn't know it and invents it."

Congrats RED, keep pushing the limit!

We have said all along that we love film, but at some point it is headed to the retirement home. Our fear was that digital replacements would not be good enough.

Jim, I thought you might be happy to know that there is at least one more area where digital sensors are superior to film, and that's the fact that digital sensors do linear light capture.

As it turns out, 3D rendering (for visual effects) is rendered into a linear buffer, just like the RED camera. It's also best to composite with linear light as well, and then tonemap in the end to produce a viewable image.

Unlike digital, film records logarithmically, and the curve that it uses isn't particularly well characterized. To get digitized film into linear form, we have to apply the reverse curves and the results are never exactly what you'd want (aka the light isn't truly linear). This makes the compositing in linear mode harder than it needs to be, and the results less realistic.

So to recap: digital (aka linear) capture is superior to film when footage must be combined with digital renderings.

So, this feature is not going to be in Scarlet?
(re Graeme: ...Only tradeoff I can think of is that you'll have to buy an Epic....)

Feels like the night before christmas. Leave me some time to be excited about MX, you maniacs. :yikes:

Cioni said it happened!

Jim

"They" are going to say Cioni is in the bag with RED. But who gives a shhh... "they" were not invited.

And "we" know what to expect from RED:
1. Things come late
2. You get even more than you imagined
3. Far more than you payed for
4. With specs magnitudes above the alternative

And soon enough there will be pictures to show it did happen, today. Lots of "pictures". ;)

Or, you could say the competition is several years late.
