I am debating between upgrading our two RED ONES to the Epic 5k with the Mysterium X sensor next summer, or waiting for the Epic 6k with the Mysterium Monstro sensor at the end of next year.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

Until anybody has seen any back to back tests it's impossible to say how much the improvement will be or know how reliable Epic is on day one. I would wait & see what happens.

To me, the most important element to Red or any camera is image quality. The monstro has more stops (13) plus any other benefits that will come with this future sensor (lower noise, higher light sensitivity? speculation here, but you know what i mean).

I don't know what your plans are, but let's say you're in the rent/hire me business. Your mysterium X sensors will soon be competing with monstro sensors. How do you convince your potential clients that they should hire you and not the guy with bragging rights to the monstro sensor?

because the monsto sensor is a full frame still camera size and your nice angenieux, cooke s4 or master primes won't cover it.....

Hi,

But the monstro sensor can shoot S35 windowed, so saying lenses won't work sounds like FUD to me.

Hey, does that mean my canon L lenses will go up in price? :)

...and why is that Antoine.
Today we're shooting with 3K, which is also a "sensor crop" format and it works like a charm.

There's nothing wrong with shooting with a windowed sensor. Using PL glass your going to shoot at max 5K and with RED mount or still glass you can shoot 6K. I'm planning on getting Epic with the Mysterium-X and then just upgrading to Monstro when it comes out. That's kind of the idea behind the new line of cameras.

sorry i now think my argument is competely stupid.

The "windowed feeling" comes from seeing the noise when shooting 2K windowed on the R1. But yes 3K looks.

thanks for making think,
antoine.

Hi Antoine,

I am with you "avoid 2K at all cost"

Stephen

I'll be switching to EPIC 5k for the size of the camera and supposedly (hopefully) close to instant boot up time. 1 more stop of dynamic range is cool as well. and of course because of the high frame rates. Not interested in ff35 for making movies at this time.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am with Stephen on this one, I think I will wait for the Epic 6K with the Monstro sensor.

I was debating upgrading to the Epic 5K, and then later upgrading the sensor to Monstro. But, there is no price announced for the upgrade path from the 5k to 6K.

Also, the lenses and accessories might be different for the FF35 Monstro sensor vs. the smaller 5K sensor. I really don't want to do two accessory upgrades. One from the RED One to the Epic 5K. And then another from EPIC 5K to larger Epic 6K Monstro sensor. Especially lenses. Fortunately we have not yet bought lenses. But we will with the Epics.

Also, the EPIC is a computer. And there could be substantial changes between the EPIC 5K released in the summer/fall and the EPIC 6K released 3 to 6 months later. While I am sure RED will take care of its early customers, I am still thinking about the accessories.

We rent our cameras a lot. So having the Monstro sensor is a must.
