  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

We still have some work to do but the entire team was very quiet, eyes and mouths wide open when the 1st images came up on Graeme's screen.

Jim, please:
Does the team feel they it will be able to give a RED-quality 2k deliverable (or bigger)?

ANYONE REMEMBER WHEN THEY FIRST TOLD US ABOUT 4k?

Now the big question is: can you shoot everything you normally would in HDR mode? Or are there limitations in motion, speed, sharpness, etc.

Wow, hearing that from Michael Cioni means this is serious.

Now I know Scarlet has an HDR stills mode but I haven't seen anything about motion. For those worried about not enough differences between Scarlet and Epic, this HDR motion mode may end up being the biggest.

Just my interpretation because I don't know how they are doing their HDR, but I would guess from Jim's first post that they wouldn't sacrifice point #1. Resolution to achieve point #2. Dynamic Range.

After all, how could they? All the photosites are built with the same technology, and because the camera is recording RAW you're already getting the most latitude you can out of the sensor. Once you over expose the MX to the point where it clips it is going to clip no matter what you change the metadata to. The only way that you could sacrifice resolution for (highlight) DR is if there was a second set of photosites that were under exposed, for whatever reason.

Jim and all,

Is this HDR feature usable for 24fps motion shooting and not just for still photo work?

Either way....I am blown away be ALL that you do.

I could show you the chart we just shot, but Graeme has not put any magic into it yet. Some people just can't tell when a prototype is exciting off the chart. All they see is what isn't finished. My tendency is to wait until Graeme is a bit further along just so I don't get my blood pressure up when someone posts a silly observation after ignoring what I just said. These moments bring out the best armchair critics. This moment deserves the best presentation.

I could be wrong but I remember Jim saying that scarlet will have HDR video as well as epic, either way this is still very good news.

Wow this is becoming both a photographers and a film makers dream! DR has always been a limiter in photography and so we created HDR techniques to bypass this, but high DR red footage that isn't 5 years away is ... dreamy!

Amazing Job Jim and Team!

Wise move. I am all with you. Do what's best for RED, and for the reputations of all involved. Protect the event.

I will wait with baited breath, dreaming about shadows and rich mid-tones at noon.

The selfish person in me wouldn't want to wait - but I can see how the cynics would pounce on every opportunity. Perhaps not a chart, but a brief on the numbers and limitations of HDR mode would be great.

On a side note, just empty speculation, I wonder if the 21 in #21 stands for 21 stops. That is certainly around the eye's dynamic range, as Michael suggests. I would prefer to think it is far grander, however.
