  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Odemax is LIVE!

Both statements are correct. As to exclusion, I suggest you contact a moderator to enforce your judgment (relax, I still love ya :)) but I think they are fair questions that others here on the Red forum and elsewhere might like answered so that they can plan a course of conduct regarding the Redray and Odemax. I am certainly not recommending that others not buy a Redray or refuse to do business with Odemax. When a consumer vision of the Redray comes out in the fall or is announced or shown at Cedia, as I suspect, and services other than Odemax offer Red encoded content, I will consider buying one. I am not suggesting that anyone not get a Redray nor sign up with Odemax. Is that clear? What is right for me is exactly that and nothing more. BTW. Have you got your Redray yet or heard when it will ship being an early orderor? The Red site now says new orders will ship within 2 to 3 weeks.

I'd love to know how Incubator looks, if anyone with a redray player wants to give it a watch for me! haha

Very exciting!

No word on the RR Player but that's not an issue with me at present. I had a narrow window where I could have used it for a purpose in mid-June, but nothing immediate where it is needed. I do look forward to watching some of the content already up, when I do get mine.

To paraphrase Neil Armstrong... "One small step for a company, one giant leap for self-distribution!

As an end user I find the indy content interesting, but I would find movies from the major Hollywood studios even more interesting. Any word on that yet?

Just thought of where ODEMAX fits in with current methods of Hollywood distribution. Film festivals may be a thing of the past except as an excuse to gather and natter.

That is, a movie maker puts his or her movie up on ODEMAX but limits viewership to Studio distribution people. They watch, if interested, they bid. If no interest evolves, the movie-maker opens his or her content up for public viewing.

This ODEMAX thing... this looks like the movie maker's bazaar. And it could become the discerning movie watchers mall.

I hope they figure out that this is the way to reach a 4k audience that doesn't like going to movie theaters. They could still open popular movies in wide release and instead of or alongside, make the movie available on ODEMAX at the same time as DVD or Blu Ray release. The profit margin would surely be there for a viewing that would make an ODEMAX presence an attractive option for all content providers, large and small.

Yes, distributing new movies via Odemax instead of (or rather in addition to) theaters would be a nice option, as well, but my main interest is in actually buying "old" movies. Although first I have to figure out if I can live with the dangers of digital distribution and DRM. I'm not sure if I won't feel safer with a physical medium. But of course that's just my 2 cents as an end user...

For what it is worth, I agree with everything being said but as a nit on my friend Elsie, I question whether this should be called self-distribution. It is distributed by Odemax. What the step is, and it is not a small step, is it opens up distribution where such has been very closed in the past.

The option for the big studios is there, its simply a question of whether such an entity elects to use it.

I wonder if the new batch of Redrays is being built in house? it doesn't really make a difference as to who builds it, all that would matter is the quality control. From a business stand point its an issue of production costs particulary if your existing workers could be more gainfully utilized building cameras and doing sensor upgrades.

RED is building all the REDRAY players themselves.

As for self-distribution, the platform is pretty open. ODEMAX seems very accommodating at the moment and lots of people are putting up content. That said, ODEMAX is NOT RED or REDRAY. ODEMAX is the first channel partner to offer services on the platform. You or I could start our own service that runs atop REDRAY. Netflix could offer services on REDRAY.... Or RED could actually incorporate Netflix into REDRAY if they chose as the API services are available -- it would presumably be all custom software for something like that. REDRAY doesn't appear to be running a commodity OS on commodity hardware. It would of course be up to Netflix if they wanted to offer 4K content to REDRAY customers... Anyway, the system is very flexible. From here forward it all depends on the content owners and producers, primarily the larger studios, to accept and embrace the platform for what it could eventually become.

ODEMAX seems to have a 30/70 split model just like the going rate for most App stores and the iTunes model.

And yes, ODEMAX service is available right now to all REDRAY owners.

I guess that from time to time we have to say; ODEMAX out-loud, it’s alive (in Beta Form), just to remember that a new form is coming down the Distribution Road! What the Heck is ODEMAX http://www.odemax.com/movie/lookup?id=212 is CHUNKY start to explain what ODEMAX is! When you click on “Get Hardware” it links you a Red.com site; http://www.red.com/store/products/redray-player one day it will all be-up and running without any problems, as I said it’s a BETA SITE. The thing is that they continue to move forward, that’s good! Soon there will be another Option for Distribution (when they’re ready, not before), and that’s also a good thing!

I can see ODEMAX as Worldwide Distribution, the promotion and advertising will still be a requirement if you want to be effective throughout the World, but the Distribution of the actual Product will definitely be easier.

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully, all that want Redrays will have them in hand by the end of the month (three weeks plus shipping) and then they can sign up for and have Odemax turned out. No big deal waiting for turn on since Odemax is rather useless until one has a Redray. I assume content providers get to write their own description of the content subject to some character number limitations. It would be useful for such description to provide the technical details on the resolution.

Big Shout to the Pioneers paving the way for us all here! Hope those checks start flowing in too.

I am so humbled to have my short film "Botch" among the rest of the stunning work on ODEMAX. Massive props to everyone whose making this groundbreaking stuff happen.

The one thing RED is not good at is estimating accurate delivery dates. I would not count on all orders shipping by the end of the month.

I all I know is that we want them on that wall. Ala A Few Good Men. And we thank them.
