Thank you kindly for your reply, Mr. Jannard. I thought that would be the case.

I used to work in a rental house and we had an Arriflex 535B and 435ES, among other cameras. They are somewhat modular, but RED has taken the concept to a much higher level. The possibilities are very exiting. I'll be putting a deposit on a fixed lens Scarlet the day RED starts taking them. I was nearly seduced when we got our first A-Minima. Now I'm glad I saved my money.

I do have another question, again, if it's something RED is willing to discuss. The addition of an Ethernet port certainly opens up a world of possible functions and interfaces. Will the Scarlet be capable of operating as an IP camera and streaming video? I'm sure that a Scarlet is overkill for a network camera, and if it didn't have that feature I wouldn't be disappointed or deterred. However, I can see how it could be useful in some situations. And again I'm just curious. Thank you.

It would be way beyond cool if they made the Ethernet port copper based
10gBaseT enabled (backwards compatible with1000/100/10), since Arista is planning on shipping their 10gBaseT switches at the end of the month. Single port NICs from Intel are under 1K usd. Cat 7 wiring will support up to 100 meters.
OK end of wishful thinking.

ok thanks

ok thanks

I really like all the projected specs about the 8x Fixed lens 2/3 Scarlet. The only drawback for me is this issue. The smaller sensor does make it slightly more difficult to create that shallow depth of field that adds so much depth and emotion to images (still and video). There is a post in the Scarlet threads that talks about this in some detail. Short answer is that the DOF capabilities will be similar to f5.6 on a typical non-full frame DSLR from Nikon or Canon et al. Still achievable but you may need to bump up the ISO if there isn't enough light, etc. And this assumes that the aperture on the fixed lens is around f2.2. If it's lower, all the better.

Once you get up to the Scarlet S35, you are dealing with the near equivalent of a non-FF DSLR in terms of DOF. But what you lose is the high frame rates that the 2/3 has.

I know there are other trade offs, but those ones are the ones that I'm paying attention to. My wish list for the fixed lens Scarlet is an aperture of sub f2.2, but however it turns out it will still do more for less than anything else out there.

Thanks for the info. I read that other thread and barry green's white-paper and it makes sense to me. I'm sold on the 2/3" scarlet instead of waiting for the S35 version (which I can't afford yet anyway). I can always buy up later on (the whole point to the RED brain system). I also believe in RED to deliver a product that it's customers want. So if I could I would plop down my deposit right now.

Here's what sells me on it: First, DOF is important to me. I have a sony digital still camera (mine's not technically a dslr) that takes amazing pictures and has nice dof. I do want to be able to achieve a reasonably narrow dof and not that "video" camera flat-look (or I would have already bought another sony video camera). Being educated on DOF having to more to do with the lens and the F stop than the sensor size was a good eye opener. Plus those 2/3" images on the other thread look great. Like I said above - I believe RED will deliver on the specs.

Second: It's a great point that one of the tradeoffs is the higher frame rates, which also interest me.

So now the only decision is whether to go with the fixed or the interchangeable. Until I get further info I am leaning towards the fixed because of price and convenience over flexibility. Something tells me that fixed lens will be a good value. But I'll wait and make the final call when more info about the two options are available.

Lens Mounts Switching

Lens Mounts Switching

How easy/fast can we switch between the three new lens mounts, PL, Nikon and Canon, for the Epic-X? Is it as simple/convenient as the Allstar design?

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=31890

In real world situation, can I still practically mix lenses with different mounts in one shoot on the set?

I may be mistaken but I believe I recall hearing that it was a simple matter of 4 screws to change a mount.

It looks that way from the pictures. But compared to Allstar's design and compared to everyday operation for changing lenses on the set, unscrewing and re-screwing FOUR screws back on is still a bit complicated. Also, are the screws and thread designed to handle frequent changes?

I'd like to hear some official response.

It is a very easy change.. and frequent changes should be no problem.

Do you guys have any modules for Left handed people?:thumbup1:

Sorry if this question has been answered in a previous - once again I tried the search engine but that doesn't work very well.

Will the S35 Epic have an optional cable between the brain and the rest of the bits so you can put it (and a lens) on a small Steadicam-like device?

I remember this as an attractive feature of the Kinetta.

Also, will my current LCDs and EVFs work with it?

Thanks!

The details aren't public yet, but it's been said before, there will be remote capabilities for modules.

funny.. somehow i have just learned to adapt... i couldn't imagine composing with my left eye.

The irony here is that I am right-handed, but I always compose with my left eye when I use DSLR. Many of my friends have noticed this and laugh about it (in a good way)...

 Peter

Seems like I 'm a minority myself. Although right-handed I use my left eye to compose.

Hey, Peter we 're two already...
