Exciting times indeed, Gibby.

And with the ability to capture in 1080p directly, this camera has just become ever more interesting for ENG/EFP productions, which we both know is a huge market (compared to the cine marked).

I love living in these times.

Exactly, Martin.

DSMC should not shot be for Cine and Photography but also ENG/EFP and Stereoscopic. Red doing Live 1080P broadcasting will make the DMSC stand for more than just its acronym!

Quick question, will I be able to mount my 2/3" B4 mount Canon HDXS zoom to the Scarlet without the 2/3"B4 to PL adapter?

James, you will need an adapter of some kind. That lens, and essentially every 2/3" B4 mount lens, is designed for a 3-chip / prism optical system. So there needs to be some form of optical correction to allow for proper color convergence on the sensor because Scarlet/Epic are single-chip CMOS. So other than the B4 to PL mount adapter, I suppose it's possible to just make a B4 mount for the new cameras. I don't know if RED will do that, I suppose if there's enough demand they will. But either way, there will be optics inside that mount and therefore it will be substantially more expensive than a PL, Nikon or Canon mount. Just as the current B4 to PL adapter is like $3400 or whatever.

RED RAY

RED RAY

By the way, I'm still really interested about RED RAY... I've asked twice but either it's being ignored or missed among all the other posts.

Just missed between all the other posts probably, but the quick summary is RED RAY is coming along very nicely..

Good news.

If the Epic does 1080 RGB, how much colouremitry is available on board?

With these new cameras on the horizon, these are exciting times for everyone - including us mobile production guys :hurray:
Steve,

That's good news about the RED glass and with the sensitivity of the new sensor that Jim is posting, it means that f2.8 will be pretty fast glass as well. You will need those screw in filters for sure!

Happy filming.

David

Just so I'm clear, this was Gibby's opinion on how lense construction would place, and therefore his own personal estimate as to lens weight, correct?

Steve, is there anything specific from Red that indicates this, or is it your personal opinion on what Red should do? (Which for the record I would welcome, but this is being taken as "news", thus I'd like to clarify).

Thanks.

I think Steve (and I can not speak for him, nor would I dare too) is understanding that from the current renders, it appears that it could be a direction RED is moving.

Oh yeah, they put in all of this touchscreen focus support, etc. I don't want to knock focus pullers, but remember (for about two seconds) stills guys got all belligerent about autofocus on SLR camera's.

Then the started getting crisp in-focus shots of guys running full speed on football fields, hockey rinks, hitting tennis balls, etc. and all of a sudden they said, "thank you". Try taking autofocus away from the best sports photographers in the world, doubtful.

Why can't this be possible for RED?

Why does cranking a follow focus unit on a geared lens have to be the best way to do things when we can implement a new technology?

I'll shut up before I start getting personal e-mail from IATSE guys.

David

Autofocus for stills is a whole different thing from autofocus in motion. I know for what motion I shoot, autofocus is not only unneeded but unwanted. Definitely needed and wanted for my stills though.

Think wireless follow focus. Not so much autofocus.

2010 looking like RED is leading the eco recovery. I'm in.

I noticed that the Epic-X deal does not include the RED side handle. is it a necessity to have this or can you use the camera with just the REDMOTE?

Side Handle is not required... you can use the REDMOTE to control the camera, and there is of course a Start/Stop button on the actual brain.

The Side Handle gives you another control option, a way to hold the camera ( obviously ), as well as a battery drawer to put a RED VOLT battery in to power the camera without a DC adapter or rear power module.

I notice that's pretty much the only main thing not included in the Tattoo package, does that mean it wont be ready by then?

Brains have internet connectivity built in.

Hmmm.

I smell some sort of theft deterrent... like the camera periodically checking online if it's on the STOLEN list... and then self destructing. That'd be sweet.

EDIT: sorry. already been mentioned.

Does the side handle price include a battery?

no.. it means we cant give everyone everything for free.

Please give us at least 4 ch of aes/ebu in. 8 would even be better for sure.

8 channels (4 xlrs) plus headphone return would be quite a snake with AES/EBU.

An alternative would be Lightpipe: 8 channels of 24bit/48KHz in a fiber cable. Very common in the audio world. Self timing. No need for a seperate WC out. Cable lenght might be an issue though.

What WOULD be nice would be a little audio safeguard:

A compressor / limiter!

Although 24 bit has a nice safety reserve built into it, I´ve seen mixerless on board RED One audio screwed up because of clipping. Happens to the best of us. Suddenly audio levels during a take are much hotter than expected. Audio - and take - unusable.

Hardware knobs on the Pro i/o module are a good step in the right direction (I´ve read it somewhere - hope I was not dreaming). Providing a bare bones compressor / limiter would be even better.

Yeah it does seem like a nice way to hold the Camera. Hope I get to hold one eventually!

This raises the question - will the DC adaptor come with the brain, or will the brain have a standard DC input on it? Hopefully we won't have to buy a $550 charger and a $150 cable like you seem to have to with the R1...

EDIT: Must have missed the $135 adaptor cable.
