Hi Jim,

Will the canon/nikon mounts be controlled by say a Birger/Impero style configuration or possibly through the redmote?

I'm curious as to how the lenses will be controlled. A different controller for each mount? A universal controller?

thank you,

so it is! sorry missed it...saw the post above mine on different lens mounts and missed the nikon bit...

Just wondering, since everyone's all about the 2/3 Scarlet...is there any chance on info for the 2/3 prime development on the 30th too?

Hi guys, I didn't see this asked but think it might be a nice feature in the 2/3rd fixed. You may have already thought about it but it would be quite handy for my purposes.

- The ability to select pre-set 35mm equivalent focal lengths from a switch or menu select. So instead of just guestimating or having to dial in the focal length for each shot, We could just hit the menu option that says 50mm or 70mm etc. To make sure our shots match up. That way we could use it as a semi-quasi prime lens.

p.s. You mentioned doing a wide angle adaptor. Will it have some sort of electronic detection so the above mentioned system will be able to correct for the additional glass/perspective?

Love what your doing so far and thanks for the picture update guys.

Well calculating is not really a complicated task however I imagined a quick menu, called "digital primes" or something (ok I'm stupid coming up with names).

And you open this slide menu and just click on the focal length presets and the zoom automatically goes to that point.

Sounds kinda pointless but sounds so cool too :).

Lol I agree, it seems a wee pointless, but I would feel better with a zoom lens in my hand knowing that I could "lock it off" at a certain focal length.

I just asked this same question over on scarletuser lol

Yeah... i'd love to have a option to zoom to the field of view on the fixed that would be equivalent to another's camera same field of view on a different lens

so say I wanted a field of view of a 50mm on a S35, just dial it in
Say you came to my house with a S35 scarlet with a 50mm Prime lens

we wanted to make the same shot, same field of view so you couldn't tell which one was which cause the frame is the identical size

make sense?

If you're trying to pull focus, zoom and adjust the aperture at the same time you're going to be either an incredibly dexterous individual, a spider monkey or multiple people and using a follow focus system.

Or an ENG cameraman.

On sticks: left hand across the top of the lens, under the viewfinder. Little finger on focus ring, middle 3 fingers on zoom rocker, thumb on iris ring.

Off the shoulder doesn't count, you get to use two hands there, that's practically cheating.

News doesn't wait for you to adjust the lens in your own time. :)

Right on. Would love a real zoom control. ENG gets a bad rap with the Hollywood set, but it paid my bills for a while. And those tools have been refined and battle tested.

Hey Jon, the nikon, canon, and RED mounts are all electronic. From everything that I've seen posted the brain will control them, so yes whatever lens controls the REDmote has will flow to the attached lens for those 3 mounts. The universal controller is the brain. Choose your lens and appropriate mount, mount the lens and start shooting.

All, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I really like this idea - although what would you be basing it on, equivalent field of view for s35 or FF35? Maybe that could be an option too.

Focus ring... iris and zoom control are electronic (focus is electronic also if selected). New fly by wire controls.

Jim

A question about the servo zoom. Is it likely, with the servo zoom, that we will be able to dial in specific focal lengths, rather than simply having a free-roving zoom fixed only at the short & long ends? This is important for matching cameras in 3D, matchmoving, & other post-production concerns.

Regards,
RQ

I believe it would be difficult to control focusing from the redmote just looking at it's configuration. That part of the comment was more to show the range of my speculation.

If the mounts are functioning now as stated, the only reason to not include how they are controlled is because that function is not ready at least enough for us to be informed. Just wondering if I could get a general idea.

Also, something about touch screen focusing. I recall something about this somewhere in memory but controlling canon/nikon lenses this way would seem pretty fascinating/complicated; as if anything in this field is not.

The Redmote ( or multiple Redmote's) can control focus.. if you want it to.

And on the fixed 8x lens.. remember the ring on the lens is electronic. Which means you can program it to control focus. or iris. or zoom. Some people might want to touch focus or auto focus and use that ring for zoom control. Some might not. The choice is yours.

For a lot of people interested in the DSMC system, I don't think they have realized the magnitude of what will be possible. Not only is the camera system modular, but the user interface is entirely customizable. I can't wait to get my hands on this stuff. :w00t:

the one problem i have is that i've used fly-by-wire before with early olympus SLR's and at least in that case the manual focus was unresponsive and didn't have physical feedback that you get with manual lenses.

I'm not saying that the scarlet hasn't addressed these issues just that i'm concerned, especially since i'm pretty sure hard stops will not be possible.

One other question is will there be a good Peaking option or other focus assist's on-screen? I've not used a RED personally so i'm unaware as to what options are available in this regard.

Annnnd there goes any chance I was getting the Fixed Lens Scarlet. Oh well.

Sorry to say that a zoom ring is a pretty necessary feature. I assume you have some robust settings to control zoom beyond just the "+/-" buttons we see on the Side Handle, but still, having to program how far you wanna zoom and how fast for every single shot? Just give me a ring to grab!

I have some of the same concerns too. Mainly because Many of us in the doc word don't have time on our hands to program to go into menu's, or even switches to go from Iris to Zoom to focus. I film rather frantic events that happen quickly. Try filming a rhino capture where you need focus, iris and zoom pretty much all at once or you'll miss it.

I plan on a detachable scarlet, but was really looking to a fix for all the close up action and leave my detachable with canon tele's on it.

Would love clarification how this work. I'm sure my need are addressed, either on the side handle or something I've missed. Maybe the lens is control by a pair of oakley glasses like chopper pilots. That would be cool.

A little late but...
can i tattooed??

:)

exciting times

great work guys

Very nice photos Jarred!!

Needless to say... RED rocks

I for one, am very pleased with the lens design of the fixed scarlet. I think it hits a perfect middle-ground, simple enough for consumer use and complex enough for a professional. I was originally planning on only getting a FF35 and a S35, but i think i might have to add a third scarlet to that list.
