  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

if I get the o focus for still lenses, can I later upgraded it to be suitable for pl glass in the future?

My O-Grips and O-Box arrived. Lovely kit.

Heading to Berkey System tomorrow to start designing something akin to the 15mm LWS solutions from VF / RED / Wooden Camera / Element Technica.

Planning to include a shoulder mount similar to the RED dovetail shoulder pad, but with a mount off the back for my Switronix V-Type battery mount plate to counterbalance the rig.

I'll post photos / links when it's done.

That would be interesting to see Bill!
Am scratching my head right now trying to PRE (scarlet) visualize some mixed-brand combo of these elements too.
Look forward to seeing what you come up with...

Good ? - I would like to know this too. The cine system sells seperately from the still lens system. I have both mounts so would need the FF to be cross compatible...

+3 on wanting clarification on this too.

Would like a system that is compatible for both EF and PL lenses.

Hi Guys,

Here is the deal on the O-Focus. There are two versions:

O-Focus DM Photo Set (this has the new Photo Hard Stop Handwheel)
O-Focus DM Cine Set (this has a CFF-1 Cine Handwheel)

The O-Focus bridge has a 1:0.75 (rounded) internal ratio. So one rotation of input gives you approximately 3/4 of a rotation of output.

The Photo Hard-stop Handwheel has no internal transmission, i.e. it's 1:1.
The Cine Handwheel’s internal transmission is 1:1.8

Multiplying the ratios out, you get:

Cine Handwheel on O-Focus DM is approx. 1:1.4 (this is well suited for cine lenses and is a ratio close to that of the CFF-1.)

Photo Handwheel on O-Focus DM is approx. 1:0.75 (this is well suited for shorter throw still lenses and expands the focus scale allowing for a longer more accurate focus pull.)

So what we have done is created a follow focus that can be optimized for still or cine lenses simply by changing the handwheel. Some customers have been buying the photo set for example and then adding a second cine handwheel to work with either type of lens. You could even have a photo handwheel on one side and a cine on the other (since it is a double sided unit.)

Here is a photo of two hard-stop handwheels on the O-Focus:

Please let me know if there are further questions on this thanks....

So on the O-Box what do you have as a mate between the Canon lens and the O-Box. Kind of looked like something flexible. I have an O-Box and I really like it. Just want to find a away to use it more on my Canon lenses when shooting with Epic.

Good eyes Andrew!

This is how the build was done:

1. The O-Box is supported by the Abel Cine AB-1519 adapter (adapting 15mm LWS to 19mm Studio rods.) The O-Focus was adapted the same way.
2. The O-Box has a 150mm back opening; the bellows ring is 150mm to a threaded 114mm opening and holds a 138mm round filter
(Pro Tip- the step down ring threading is the same for OConnor, Chrosziel and ARRI so the rings can be used together.)
3. We used an OConnor 114mm to 110mm step down ring (this 110mm ring is also threaded)
4. We then screwed in the 110mm Chrosziel Flexi-Insert Ring # C-450-20

This is a very good solution to have in your bag at all times. It accomplishes two things; one it creates a nice light tight fit around the lens when you may not have the correct size step down ring and two it allows for some axial movement of the lens. The downside is the rubber will tear after a while.

Thanks so much for the info Eric. I'll be sure to add those items to my O-Box kit.

Could a swing arm be added to the DM?

Hi Roberto,

The CFF-1 swing arm is not compatible with the O-Focus; they have different gearbox design profiles. The O-Focus is intended to be used as a direct drive follow focus; there are no plans at this time to add a swing arm. Hope this helps.

Any updates as to when that trigger is going to be available? I know you're an OConnor representative, but what other triggers are out there on the market that provide decent competition to OConnor's?

Also, is it necessary to use the OGrip in order to use the trigger, or is it compatible with the clutch grips?

Eric,

I've got an O-box on loan right now and ran into a few issues during my initial testing. Perhaps you can help answer these Qs?

1. With the O-box mounted on 15mm rods, the filter can't rotate more than a few degrees -- it runs into the rods. Can you only mount the mattebox on the END of rails, or am I missing something? I'm talking about a configuration like this:

2. The tabs on the 15mm LWS Rod Bracket don't rotate fully -- they run into the edge of the MB rear element. I assumed they should rotate fully to allow for maximum flexibility when tightening on rods. Again... am I missing something? They're the silver tabs at the bottom of this picture:

Thanks for any help.

Hello Ryan,

Regarding your two questions:

1. This is an issue with ALL rotating 4x5.65 filter stages on ALL matteboxes; the 15mm LWS rod standard collides with the physical ability of the filter tray to rotate. This is why you mount the mattebox at the very end of the rods; to allow for full free rotation.

2. The silver lock levers you are referring to are unique in that they use a ratcheting 18 position design. To allow for full 360 degree clearance simply pull out on the lock lever and position as needed.

This should explain your two issues; hope this helps.
