  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Observations...

Agree Jannard, all red cameras are amazing, I do love my Red One, it is still better than many 4k cameras that are made this days...

as someone who dreamed of owning a Red when the Red One was released to saving every extra penny and purchasing the Scarlet-X the night it was announced, sitting on the couch with my wife when Jim made the presentation and internet at Red was getting hammered and having to get all my updates from Joe and others on twitter. To upgrading to the Red-Dragon last november, my entire career (short as it may be... has been thanks to Red). Everywhere i go i am "the guy with a Red". It has opened more doors than years of me pounding on them. And with the groundswell around Weapon it's no surprise I am again stunned with the future... all that to just say thanks Jim, Jarred, Phil (thanks for all the info). Red will be the last camera i ever buy (and that's a great thing). Obsolescence obsolete.

Jim and Jarred and of course the whole red team congrats on pushing the boundaries of what digital cameras can do. I am glad to have upgraded on dragon the last week, because future on red seems very bright. Don't feel the need to jump onto the weapon, but the extended 5000 usd credit will surely come handy when the right time comes. Keep the coolness and goodness of red, because it is well worth it.

It's moments like this that makes me wonder why I blew 60k on a 2.8k sensor that uprezzes to uhd lmfao

Hey Brian... I know it can seem like a total madhouse. It is. And it is like that every year.

We change things 15 times over and over even at the very last moment, alot of times while I am literally typing the posts. It is organic... and yes it can look like a total clusterfuck.

It would make a PR person commit suicide.

Spat my coffee over this - fantastic. Please don't change !!

Dear Jarred,

With all due respect.

I am confidently saying that the new RED Weapon line up, as announced with its specs, creates a rather big gap between Epic Dragon and leaves a big crowd of people that where looking forward to upgrade disappointed.

I am sure that most of us existing RED users would love upgrading to Weapon just for the smaller lighter form factor, contemporary peripherals and the auto calibrated sensor.

We would have been fine springing 10k for such a upgrade as that is a really great soft spot for most of us.

If the bigger processing power in the new Weapons is dedicated to recording ProRes, and thats obviously a big selling factor to a huge new crowd.
For us existing users that don't care about in camera ProRes, there is really nothing at hand.

I am convinced that most users here would love to see a third weapon, that tops current Epic Dragon but stays below the MG and CF Weapons with features and price tag.

In other words, we desperately need a steeping stone, so we don't fall in the gap.

Thank you kindly for your consideration.

… and sorry if I am going a bit of topic here, but its just my observation. ; )

Thanks James. Are you suggesting just a pure Epic ---> Weapon type body upgrade, without the extra processing?

That is kind of interesting.

Pretty much YES.

I think Weapon body and auto calibrated sensor are the two biggest factors.

Jarred, thanks you for considering this.
it could be the way for a lot of us to stay on the RED train. take advantage of the lighter and smaller body, clever new ergonomics but no extra processing needed for the prores. call it the Weapon for small shop that have no problem with the current RED workflow, and don't see the point of prores..

Hi,

I got a red one Mx, epic , dragon and also a scarlet - all the cameras from Red.

I had two epics, both failed and sent for repairs totally 3 times from India back and forth. I have a small request ,

I'm amazed at Weapon and 8K sensor upgrade path later. I have 2 Epic Dragons which will be weaponized sooner but I also had a Scarlet MX which I wanted to upgrade as scarlet dragon. I was ready to pay the deposit and opened my account to get a shock that it has become $12.k again. Can you please extend the $9.5k upgrade rate till some more time. At the NAB frenzy did not expect this coming and all our attention on Weapon. At least a week more , we can pay the deposit for dragon upgrade. We are a bunch of Red lovers from India.
The dragon upgrades are going to cease by June 2015 , why not extend the $9500 upgrade path for a few more days. I did not read it anywhere that costs will increase post 13th April :( can we get the upgrades for $9.5k ?

Thanks,
Aaranyan

Now, this has just taken an interesting turn... :)

A Weapon LT (Lite) or Weapon RAW (meaning conventional workflow only - no prores) - basically as close as we can get to the Weapon... but one that allows small shops (good terminology Loic!) & Owner/Ops (small scale renters) to jump onboard.

With the new ecosystem of mags and accessories, plus the upgrade price as it stands now (and only having recently moved to Dragon in early 2015), it's precluding a lot of people (I expect) from moving on... myself included. If an intermediary step is created (and one that softens the financial outlay for those of us that are 'small'), then I'm all for it!

Advantage for RED is that you'll get a lot more people move over to Weapon LT (Weapon RAW) and then another upgrade path can be offered to the Full-on Weapon... as you'll already have migrated a host of users over to the new Weapon body and eco-system.

Whilst that might mean (in the longer term) that Weapon LT/RAW users pay more if they want to move over to the full Weapon, it can be viewed as a continual upgrade path, and would mean ROI can be recouped over time for owners - and RED benefits from having more of it's production facility focused on the Weapon system.

I must admit I fell off the train a few weeks back, tumbling down the slope smashing my head and body against the rocks as I cradled and protected my Epic-MX… which by the way is delivering images my clients think are from a 200 million dollar Hollywood movie, (you do know people still drive around in Rolls Royces from the 60s, 70s, 80s etc with zero incentive or desire to buy the latest Roller)… but I digress…

Pro Res seemed understandable years ago when there was external misinformation, unclear 3rd party support and everyone was up in arms about the RED workflow, but these days the workflow couldn't be simpler. Drag my Red files into the NLE, edit it (in a 1920 x 1080 timeline most of the time, Jim just spat his coffee across the room cigar and all)… send it to DaVinci… spit out the final result. Or if I want just spit out a result via Media Encoder. I don't even need a Red Rocket. I'm not being held up by anything. What's holding me up? Everything's moving as fast as I can go. I can't think of a good reason purely for my own purposes to record in Pro Res.

But yes, other than the Australian dollar which was on parity or even stronger than the USD not that long ago, now seemingly in a tailspin anally raping me moment by moment tilt shifted (add 3 grand to anything 10k USD and on it goes exponentially like a balloon expanding but not exploding) then it's a great time to be paid in USD, not so great to buy. What I'm getting at in a longwinded fashion is the in-betweener Weapon would keep me on the Red train too I suspect. Or at least be a very strong incentive to keep the faith.

I'd bet this is probably what most owners were expecting and hoping for in Weapon right now, is still their only viable option financially.

count me in for two Weapon RAW !
Prores makes sens for a lot of Red users so it's a smart move, but if it were only for us i'd want all the available computing power used on more FPS, DR and resolution, in that order ;)

Jarred was talking about a model "without the extra processing". That would not make sense to sell a weapon raw with the power to do prores without prores. Where is the economy then for Red and for us?
I like the idea of an Epic Dragon in a Weapon body, then people can have access to the future models more smoothly, and get the accessories at their pace. Of course that would be nice to know about it before the Scarlet D-> Epic D upgrade ends in june ^^

I like that idea too, not just for EPIC. Don't forget Scarlet here. ;) A path to a Weapon body would make lots of sense for many. I don't need Pro-Res and i don't need extra power, but what i would love to have is the smaller formfactor and hopefully the other advantages, like no blackshading and maybe less power consumption (and no battery-drain when turned off), less heat, access to the new modules(!!!)...

And then a path to that VV-sensor with 24-30fps @ 8k. Just dreaming a little here... ;))

If such a camera is made - it would make sense to just call it Weapon AL - and make it from aluminum, as that was another common request in order to keep the price down. That would also go well with the MG and CF versions - as the key (and most visible) difference would be the outside shell material...

Exactly. Size, no blackshading and no battery drain, that's what makes me want the weapon. That would be a dream.

Great idea.
