Agree Jannard, all red cameras are amazing, I do love my Red One, it is still better than many 4k cameras that are made this days...

Hey Brian... I know it can seem like a total madhouse. It is. And it is like that every year.
We change things 15 times over and over even at the very last moment, alot of times while I am literally typing the posts. It is organic... and yes it can look like a total clusterfuck.
It would make a PR person commit suicide.
Dear Jarred,
With all due respect.
I am confidently saying that the new RED Weapon line up, as announced with its specs, creates a rather big gap between Epic Dragon and leaves a big crowd of people that where looking forward to upgrade disappointed.
I am sure that most of us existing RED users would love upgrading to Weapon just for the smaller lighter form factor, contemporary peripherals and the auto calibrated sensor.
We would have been fine springing 10k for such a upgrade as that is a really great soft spot for most of us.
If the bigger processing power in the new Weapons is dedicated to recording ProRes, and thats obviously a big selling factor to a huge new crowd.
For us existing users that don't care about in camera ProRes, there is really nothing at hand.
I am convinced that most users here would love to see a third weapon, that tops current Epic Dragon but stays below the MG and CF Weapons with features and price tag.
In other words, we desperately need a steeping stone, so we don't fall in the gap.
Thank you kindly for your consideration.
… and sorry if I am going a bit of topic here, but its just my observation. ; )
Thanks James. Are you suggesting just a pure Epic ---> Weapon type body upgrade, without the extra processing?
That is kind of interesting.

Pretty much YES.
I think Weapon body and auto calibrated sensor are the two biggest factors.
Jarred, thanks you for considering this.
it could be the way for a lot of us to stay on the RED train. take advantage of the lighter and smaller body, clever new ergonomics but no extra processing needed for the prores. call it the Weapon for small shop that have no problem with the current RED workflow, and don't see the point of prores..

Now, this has just taken an interesting turn...
A Weapon LT (Lite) or Weapon RAW (meaning conventional workflow only - no prores) - basically as close as we can get to the Weapon... but one that allows small shops (good terminology Loic!) & Owner/Ops (small scale renters) to jump onboard.
With the new ecosystem of mags and accessories, plus the upgrade price as it stands now (and only having recently moved to Dragon in early 2015), it's precluding a lot of people (I expect) from moving on... myself included. If an intermediary step is created (and one that softens the financial outlay for those of us that are 'small'), then I'm all for it!
Advantage for RED is that you'll get a lot more people move over to Weapon LT (Weapon RAW) and then another upgrade path can be offered to the Full-on Weapon... as you'll already have migrated a host of users over to the new Weapon body and eco-system.
Whilst that might mean (in the longer term) that Weapon LT/RAW users pay more if they want to move over to the full Weapon, it can be viewed as a continual upgrade path, and would mean ROI can be recouped over time for owners - and RED benefits from having more of it's production facility focused on the Weapon system.
count me in for two Weapon RAW !
Prores makes sens for a lot of Red users so it's a smart move, but if it were only for us i'd want all the available computing power used on more FPS, DR and resolution, in that order![]()
I like that idea too, not just for EPIC. Don't forget Scarlet here.Jarred was talking about a model "without the extra processing". That would not make sense to sell a weapon raw with the power to do prores without prores. Where is the economy then for Red and for us?
I like the idea of an Epic Dragon in a Weapon body, then people can have access to the future models more smoothly, and get the accessories at their pace. Of course that would be nice to know about it before the Scarlet D-> Epic D upgrade ends in june ^^
"The smaller formfactor and hopefully the other advantages, like no blackshading and maybe less power consumption (and no battery-drain when turned off), less heat"
If such a camera is made - it would make sense to just call it Weapon AL - and make it from aluminum, as that was another common request in order to keep the price down. That would also go well with the MG and CF versions - as the key (and most visible) difference would be the outside shell material...
