  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OBLIVION starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. Shot on F65 and EPIC.

Dont know if this was mentioned but the sky backgrounds were shon on Epics on top of the Maui volcano Haleakala.

You can see them in this video starting at 30s.

Yeah in the context of this F65 superiority discussion, thats some Epic irony right there ; )

( A little navel gazing here. 1,080 posts to match my Original RED ONE serial 1080p+++. Just thinking about the fact that I made the deposit in Oct 2006. Man time flies. )

First of all, professionals don't hate natural light, and second, the set-up you are describing involves artificial lighting!

That's the irony I was pointing out (the pseudo part); to make the most realistic artificial light, they shot 270degree fx plates of natural light, and then projected it so it'd act as a giant bounce that was hyper-realistic (but completely fake) to the point where they even used reflectors/bounce as fill off of the projected/artificial natural key... That's hilarious.

It's like, 'Only an idiot would actually reinvent the wheel... what we did was artificially reinvent the wheel!' It's awesome.

I was disappointed to here that this will be release only in 2K. I was looking forward to a 4K release of this.
I saw sections of oblivion in 4k, was nice but on screens smaller then 20 feet I had a hard time telling. Claudio and his DIT talked in detail on their process and lighting at nab, was very interesting. Claudio really wanted a 4k release, he did a ton of the shot approaches with practicals so would have a clean look at 4k. He talked in detail on his lighting approach, was extremely impressive ... Especially a scene which he lit with a candle with ambient projectors for a sunset. So far best shot movie I have seen this year.

Saw it this evening and was very impressed. Visually was a treat :)

I can't wait until high quality front-projected methodology becomes routine and cheap enough for small productions!!

You can see that it was an expensive operation, and required a lot of expertise:

"How did you stitch projection together so it looked seamless?

PRG handled it. They have servers and seaming software. I think at one point they had 10 projectionists and it was a three week install. It was a big deal. We planned this for months in advance and I was drawing and sketching it out. But it was so worth it in the end."

Stitching together shots is pretty easy with soft edge masking ...... I it did 20 years ago for a Expo pavilion. shot film then stitched it together for continuos video.

The bitch is aligning all those projectors & calibrating all the projector bulbs to pump out the same colour temp and brilliance . The more projectors the bigger headache.

We provided the Epics for the Drone POV footage which was shot using a small copter-cam, which is exciting because I'm told that's an integral part of the narrative. The guy that owns the copter rigs rented from us again the other month but couldn't tell us what it was for, interested to see what it turns out to be.

Well, I liked it. Not a big fan of the grading or the colours of the film. Liked the soundtrack and the ambience of it. Entertaining, but it built to an underwhelming ending. SPOILER DO NOT READ BEYOND THIS POINT IF HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM:

At least 51 guys will be chasing a girl, and 51 girls will be pissed and plotting for revenge. And caos starts when these couple's homes suddenly lose electricity and communication from Titan. :)

Actually, these ingredients make for an hilarious sequel!

First of all, F65 and EPIC look fabulous. As a movie itself Oblivion was a lot like Tron Legacy to me. Not the most sophisticated plot or extra involved script, but for some reason I was hypnotized by the audiovisual magic of the movie. I can compare that to what I felt after seeing Blade Runner for the first time, it had similar meditative and dreamy effect on me. I'm not sure if I use correct words right now to express the feeling, though. Score by m83 also helps, I'm a sucker for soft synths.

My son, who is not in the industry, said the same thing ... basically he liked the movie but the plot was too close to Tron Legacy (him picking tron legacy out of the blue really says how close the two movies are ... after he said the comment i mentioned to him it was the same guys ... which made sense to him). On the dialogue side I noticed I was picking exact phrases before people said them, which isn't a good sign for original writing. I personally could not get into the plot at all(and was bored the last 20 minutes). I also watched the movie in a new RPX theater - experience was similar to 4k to me(I have seen key sections of the movie in "4k"). My son though, didn't notice much difference between a normal movie and a RPX, aside from the seats being a lot cleaner. I did like the cinematography, but in whole it seemed to fall short (aside from a few scenes like the "candle" scene, which was brilliant).
