  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OBLIVION starring Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman. Shot on F65 and EPIC.

The F65 created some remarkable and beautiful images.

Well done, F65 and Claudio Miranda!

Agreed, good talk by Claudio on fxphd.com on http://www.fxguide.com/fxpodcasts/fxpodcast-248-oblivion/ , the last 10 minutes he talks about his new movie (and the problems of really needing 65mm type "digital" film camera. [was similar to something David Mullen was saying on resolution in another thread]. Main problem Claudio is having now is he has to shoot with multiple camera's in a single film, to get the look he needs(and having so many different camera types is just a hassle).

Wasn't the front projected clouds the only thing shot on Epic, everything else was F65. If so, then does it really count as "shot on epic"?

Claudio Miranda said the movie is 98% F65, 2% Epic. The Epic (because of it's size), was only used for Tom Cruise body mounts, and some steadicam shots.

Saw it last night at the AMC Loews IMAX theatre on Broadway in New York and it is one of the most beautiful digitally shot films I have ever seen, period. The screen size is 80 feet and the images simply shined on it. Everything from color to final grade to VFX to dynamic range was superb, and all this with a 2k release. I am not a big fan of the whole "End of the world" genre but this movie had me completely immersed. I tip my hat to Joseph Kosinski and Claudio Miranda for a job very well done.

Just saw it last night, beautifully shot (as you'd expect from Claudio), but it was so all utterly on the nose that I couldn't get anything out of it - OH LOOK, THIS IS AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT BECAUSE EMOTIONAL MUSIC IS PLAYING LOUDLY.

The film could have done with a little more subtlety and nuance.

Perhaps, but then again you declare most of Spielbergs movies with John Williams bad because of emotional music playing over emotional scenes.
I can think of worse cases of bad music choices in films then Oblivion, which I think had a rather good "emotion on emotion" cues.

I still think it's odd that it's being almost said to have been shot on both cameras when there is so little shot on it. There are plenty of films using crash cams or other gear for certain shots but it's not like those cameras gets mentioned in the same way. I do love the Red cameras but Oblivion is all F65, that's the camera to give credit for this movie's stunning look.

I watched this movie late right after a previous one in the theater.

I could have easily critiqued it due to my tired eyes.

However the story and the amazing look of it kept me in all the way to the end.

One of the things I missed about going to the movies.

Some film scores treat the volume knob like some kind of 'emotometer'.

Very pretty. Starting with beautiful locations makes the world of a difference in getting great images. I would be intrigued to see some raw plates and see just how much of the front project actually got used. I imagine in a lot of shots it was all that was used but I just know from painful experience that what's pitched in marketing videos and what actually happens in the composite can be two very different things. :P

Story wise I thought it was a good solid story (if pretty predictable from the very start). Its biggest failing imo plot wise was the lack of chemistry between the two main characters. The love triangle was well thought out but I just didn't see anything between them. Seemed like a pretty loveless marriage. ;)

Also three teeny tiny things bugged me plot wise that were over the top "because it's necessary for the plot!" 1) super alien species can't deploy a few relay satellites for 24 hour communication? 2) The drones were autonomous due to lack of a relay satellite but they deactivated when the TET was blown up. It was already well established that they were independent of the tet. 2b) Why was there always a shortage of drones? Surely they had more than enough spares up in that megaship. Seemed penny wise and pound foolish for a super intelligence. Lose a giant resource collector instead of giving them 2-3 more teeny tiny drones--real smart tet. 3) Of the places in the solar system to get resources... earth actually kind of sucks. Seems unnecessarily difficult. But that annoys me in every space-invasion-for-resources movie.

Just watched Oblivion for the first time on blue-ray and it completely blew me away. Jaw-dropping imagery, I stared in awe the whole time. The F65 did an amazing job, but all this bickering about which camera is better seems pointless compared to the art direction in this film. I'm not sure what amazed me more, the movie or what went on behind the scenes. The sets, props, and building the actual bubble jet, the machine they built to simulate movement within the bubble jet, Tom Cruise pulling off his own stunts. Get the Blue-ray and watch the behind the scenes, incredible.

Just watched Bluray and BTS.%100 they shot fight scene in the end on Red Epic.Dont understand why on earth Claudio Miranda said They used Epic only on Cloud Enviroment plates.

He actually said they used Epic in few other scenes where the lighter camera was needed.
