  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NULL Lens now shipping -- and Announcing the NULL Target

I've had mine for a while now. Definitely one of the best purchases I've made for the RED kit. Takes just a few seconds to check collimation and only a few seconds more if an adjustment is needed.

What call is that? Did you leave me a message? I'm sorry if I missed you. I just spoke with someone on the phone a moment ago about using the NULL Lens, was that you?

I have a complete set of Red lenses purchased when i bought the Red One. Infinity has never been in focus on any of them. I checked the backfocus using the chart method and it is bang on to the distant markings on the lens. Nect I purchased a Red Focus and got it set bang on but again the focus is out on infinity. Would you recommend purchasing a null lense collimator? I have reset the backfocus many times over the years but never solved this issue.
Comments?

First of all, does it actually focus to infinity (or beyond) for distant objects (150feet or more away), and it's just the infinity marking on the lens that's off? If so, just make a new lens mark with tape and a pen!

Or can you actually not get distant objects in focus, in which case either the lenses or the camera FFD is off specification.

If your camera is correct with the Null, and also correct for lens distances less than infinity, it's likely that it's actually your lenses which are slightly off specification.

If you only ever use your own Red lenses and don't hire any, then I would just adjust your camera to your lenses. Use the widest lens first as that is most critical. If all your lenses have the same offset, getting the widest lens correct should mean all your other lenses are good too.

If you hire other lenses a lot, or hire out your camera without your lenses, then get your lenses adjusted.

Do you have any filters on or a Motion Mont.? Sometimes just a UV filter can effect things a bit. And are the lenses metric or imperial?

I just got a Red Null because I had a similar problem that some of my lenses didn't reach infinity. If you are using a RED Focus I'd figure you'd be spot on. How far off infinity are they? A lot or just a half mil or less.

ps for me this was a non modified Red Null on a dragon. Don't know if it fits the Epic x with out the modification to the Null lens or not
good luck.

Hey Russ, I had to have my RedNull modified to fit my Epic-X.
Now that I have the Dragon upgrade, I suppose by reading your post that the original unmodified RedNull would fit fine?

I have a Null lens combo myself - modified for Epic. When I bought mine a while back Mitch Goss's explanation was "The modification involves milling down the metal housing in the rear of the NULL so that it does not make contact with the interior housing of the camera." So the mod was only shaving down metal at the rear of the unit. I'd presume both modified/unmodified nulls give the same result.

Don't have a Dragon yet, does your mod'd null fit?

Andy, mine is the shaved down version...which was a really snug fit in my Epic-X.
I have not yet tried it on the Dragon upgrade yet...I am somewhat reluctant to try it before I hear from others who have :-)

Jeff, mine's had a shave too :)

I don't think there's a difference between Epic and Dragon - once trimmed I'm sure the null will be fine...

Edit - as proven by Frank's pic :)

According to Jeff Kilgroe on the other Null thread, the Dragon port is different to the Epic-X/Scarlet-X port, and will accommodate the unmodified Null Lens.

Jeff is correct the Epic and Dragon lens port are different in shape and size deep in the port. It works fine on my Dragon but I took the lens mount off first to make sure how far the Null fit in to the lens port or sensor chamber first and to make sure there was no contact to the mount area. And even then it is a very, very tight fit. The difference is there is sort of a square shape with rounded corners in the Dragon chamber or PL mount port that gives just enough room for the un modded Null lens.
Like I said I was very carful and I stress very reluctant to just smash the Null lens on the PL mount with out taking some time and R&D to find out what experiences others had before I did this.

It would be great if Able Cine dropped some info here on the forum, but then if it works with out the extra modification then that is kind of counter productive for biz if you get my drift. But hey if it works no problem on the Dragon then it might give a new boost to some sales of other wise items sitting around waiting for owners.

All in all its probably better to have the modded version just incase someone just wants to use it for Epic X/Scarlet X and Dragon both at the same time.. I only did it due to being in kind of a pinch situation and probably normally would have waited for the mod but all indications pointed to me being ok just needed to be careful.

From what I understand also about the modded version is that if you accidentally rotate it 90 degrees and mount it on the camera it can have the same issue as a non modded version on a Epic X/Scarlet, can anyone confirm this???.

Wow, you guys read my mind. I was going to ask about this yesterday as I am about to shoot with a Dragon and wanted to know whether the Null lens/target was working okay. I've only used it on Red One. Sounds like it's good to go. I was going to have to dig into my records to see which version I received when I bought it.

Thanks!

Russ, you are correct....if you mount the modified RedNull 90 degrees the WRONG WAY, it will hit the rectangular frame of the OLPH filter. As it is, even mounted correctly, I occasionally scrapped the edges of the frame...nothing that would anything to the camera or image, just something to be careful of.

If it scraped a shiny bit off any of the black matte surfaces, that could result in some unwanted flares with light at certain angles, similar to the infamous gate flare.

So, it seems that the 'modified' null, if mounted the wrong way, scrapes/catches on the Dragon....

What about the 'original/un-modified' null - if that's mounted the 'wrong' way, what happens then?

No, it should be fine with Dragon, it's the Epic/Scarlet-X which is an issue.
