  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NULL Lens now shipping -- and Announcing the NULL Target

what will be the target prize of the NULL target and lens?

As low as we can practically make it.

Seriously, if I told you a high number then everyone would be mad. If I told you a low number then everyone would be pissed off when the product came out to be higher. We are still in prototype and simply do not know what it will cost to produce.

Anyone received their RED NULL yet? any nuggets to throw out to us, is it working for you.?

Yeah c'mon, I know some of you have them.

Hi Mitch

I'm probably going to say something redundant and obvious or too late but:

I think you should in the design of the Target consider PL mounts that use shims rather than a 'with shot' adjustment process.

Epic may go shims and you also have other markets available..

kind regards

Michael L

It has already been announced that the Epic and Scarlett cameras will not use shims but instead will have a solid mount with the sensor moving back & forth to set correct depth. This is the same way the Sony F35 adjusts depth.

But we do intend to make a device for determining correct mount depth for mounts that use shims, such as on the Phantom. As I noted earlier, the NULL Lens is the start of a family of products, with the NULL Target the next in line. Coming later will be other products, such as the one you mention and numerous others. To make one device do it all means that everyone would have to pay a lot of money even if they were only using a fraction of the features. We figure that the greatest volume of clients will be using RED cameras which do not need NULLs with built in micrometers. This makes for a considerably less expensive unit for the RED client.

Sorry I hadn't picked up that Epic was definitely going to not be shims..

Looks like you got it all covered.

Would there be a field upgrade possibility if Jannard changes his mind? I'm probably pushing it a bit after all it's not an expensive item...sorry

thanks again Mitch

Michael

Yeah I got the Null a couple days ago.

Works as advertised. Pretty dang easy to use. I had to drastically crank down the ISO and up the shutter as I was using it outside.

The object you are pointing at makes a difference. Buildings with bricks or objects with lots of detail help with the focusing.

Let's not make plans until we see what the future holds.

Mitch, i know i won't have mine by end of week, but are you still on target to get all pre-orders sent out by end august, i think i remember reading that somewhere?

Red Null #7 just arrived...pretty simple device. Testing now on our 2 Red Ones. I'll post a review shortly.

Look at that pretty manual! I wonder who wrote that?

I believe so, but every unit has to pass through Abel QC before shipping out to clients and sometimes shipments get held up in customs. We lost a week on the first delivery because of this. I will do my best to keep everyone up to speed. We're a good chunk of the way through our reservation list as of now.

15 minutes and two Red Ones are now spot on focus. Very cool new tool, which should be considered a must have for any serious Red owner. There are other options in the works, Jacek's looks the most promising, but for now this is the only option shipping and it works exactly as advertised.
The only negatives have already been discussed, the fact that it must be used outside (or in a very large studio) and that critical focus is almost impossible w/o the new options just announced.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the Red Null. It is very simple to use and takes only a few minutes to verify the Red's backfocus.

After seeing the optitek and a few other
back focus / collimating devices on
the reduser I thought I might have jumped
the gun with the NULL. Boy was I wrong
this is so cool . Point it out the front door
at a neighbors tree, sharpen it up in 1:1
magnification ( focus assist) and Viola
back focus is good to go. Our first camer
came up a little off but with careful adjustment
it's fantastic. I put another set of critical
eyes on the monitor while I retightened
collar. After a couple of tries we got the
hang of it . This is a MUST have
either the Null or the other options but for the
size( small ) and the ease of operation
seems like the null is the way to go.
Unless you live in Indiana there should always
be something over 150' out a window or door
Thanks IB/E and Mitch this is a good one

Happy to hear that people are satisfied with their NULL Lenses.

Abel is shipping out more NULL Lenses this week to reservation holders, but we and IB/E didn't quite make our end of August deadline. Abel and IB/E decided to institute a double-verification program where each NULL Lens was checked against a standard both in Germany and in New York. This added some production delay but insured the precision of the devices. I'm happy to state that no NULL Lens was rejected after this Quality Control procedure.

We expect to have the remainder of reserved NULL Lenses delivered by mid-September. At that time we will have NULL Lenses in inventory for direct purchase. Abel Cine Tech has decided to extend the original $1595 pricing for a limited time. The NULL Lens can be purchased either by contacting a Sales Rep. in our NY, LA or Chicago offices or through our website. Here is the link:

http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=1001394

If you are an international client you can click on the Contact Sales tab to arrange a purchase or anyone is always free to contact me directly. Please include your direct email so that I can ask a Sales Rep. to be in contact.

More coming soon on the NULL Target.

Mitch, how long before delivery do you email and ask for full payment? I reserved one when they were first put on sale but haven't heard back since then to request payment.

Thanks and looking forward to it arriving soon.

Cheers,

Paul

We generally email three or four days before the unit is ready. If we don't hear back from you we'll keep trying for a while and last resort is after two weeks I'll PM the person here on REDuser. So far Sales has only asked me to do that once, so we're pretty good at getting back to people. We don't like to ask for payment until it's pretty much time to deliver the product, but we did have a few reservers elect to pay us in full instead of placing the 10% deposit. We have not yet had a case where we could not reach someone and had to skip his/her place on the reservation list.

Whats the ETA for the target add-on?

Don't yet know.

I just got my RedNull. It is awesome! I wish I had it a year and a half ago! Way faster than messing with a bunch of primes... I set my back focus in probably 60-120 seconds taking my time!

Cheers to Able!

Rich
