Has anybody noticed Jim's talk abut 4K delivery, and his commitment to 4K?

What good is shooting anything else besides movies, unless the clients SEE it in 4K? The answer IS...REDRAY 4K.

Just when Sony has won the format war, another will kick off. 4K on an optical disk looks like a near future.

I just found this on the US Trademarks...

My buddy works for InPhase Technologies here in Colorado; you should check out their holographic versatile discs. They should do the job just right. :) And they should be at NAB this year for some demos.

I don't imagine Jim & co going into a consumer format war with Sony with their hands so full, right after the format war and with the advent of major online distribution.

Then again, those magic pixies can work wonders...

I dont know the read/write speeds of HVD but if there is a significant increase in speed and stability when compared to hard drives, I can see it being used to feed images/data to the line of RED 4K display solutions.

I like the thinking behind that. No messing about with complex DCI spec conforming, have a REDCINE like software application that checks for compatability/allows tweaks, then it burns your film onto the REDray disk. You just simply put the disk in the REDplay breakout box connected to your 4K projector and away you go!

I think that technology like this would be more suited to digital cinema distribution. If it's decided that it becomes the standard and supports all the known audio codecs used in the cinema... Actually maybe audio could be run separately but it would certainly be more convenient.

I think this is in line with some stuff that Jim said in the past about where RED's Digital Cinema technology was going and if such technology could be adapted for home theater usage, he's got a potentially huge cashcow though I don't think it's the right time to put 4K in the home yet with consumers just now making the transition to HDTV at a snail's pace. Then again, we are talking about something coming from a man who has been known to break the fundamental laws of the universe from time to time so who knows where this will go.

Call me stupid, but I don't see the need for 4K home theatre any time soon. We all know that the size of the screen/viewing distance is an important part of the equation, with many people unable to even benefit from full 1080P at the moment.

Then again, we can adapt personal computer models of development, whereby software/end products are designed to work on unearthly complex technologies, which results in semiconductor manufacturers scurrying along to meet demand...

Jim already announced Red would produce 4k displays and projectors. That is the logical step. From capture to output in 4k. I sure would like to see my 4k footage in 4k and not in some bastardized low res mode like we have to do now. Wouldn't you?

Dude the Red 5.6 inch LCD is $1700 and you're talking about a 4k TV for $750?
Lets come back to the real world for just a few minutes and think things over

The real world is that...the real world will change.

I'm thinking this thing will happen overnight, a few years probably. We shall see.

This is all about cinema distro! Bring the Pictures to the masses.
Fedexing a disc is still more secure and pirate proof then 1's and 0's in cyberspace. It also cuts the hardware costs for Digital cinema immensly (if they are successful with a projector recorder and playback device) It is really great to see red is supporting a FULL workflow from camera to post to projection that is AWESOME! Now if they can just write that script for me . . . .

Just realized perhaps this could be the low cost archival medium we need (LTO seems a but Heavy and tape has its vulnerablilities. Not only for display but . . . .

I think you may be missing the most important point on... WORKFLOW! The ability to play back R3D files instantly is ENORMOUS.

Oh no doubt, I fully realise that. I was just trying to say that RED RAY probably is not some consumer 4K-centric format. So few people have HDTV's around the world, let alone the money to buy 4KTV's and REDRAY to watch movies on.

So are they intending to make production houses the new theater?

Since 4k is a little beyond "normal" people and production houses will have all the cool toys WAY before any theater chain. You'll make movies and show movies all "in-house". Now that's a revolutionary idea...if a bit far fetched. That has odd potential. ;)

As I understand, Redray will do two things:
1- Debayer and play back 4K Red footage in real-time. Kind of like a Red VTR. (Dang, should've asked about deck control... and SD downconversion... and all the other nice features in current VTRs).

2- Delivery medium for 4K material. Play the material out through quad link SDI or DVI.

2b- This will be on a normal RED LASER disc. Not bluray, not HD DVD.

Presumably, this implies that Red is going to need(develop) a much more efficient compression scheme than what's available now.

Specs are subject to change...
