Jarred, compared to the mini primes, how well will Canon L-lenses work with 2/3" Scarlet (apart from being electronicaly controlled, I'm more interested in the image itself)?

I have a couple of those and would like them to come to use. Or is it perhaps better to save up for a full sensor Scarlet for those lenses? And talking about the other Scarlet versions, do you have any approximate prices on those so that one might prepare oneself? :)

One more thing: I'm really impressed with what you guys at RED are doing and your presence at this forum. Keep up the great work! I'm pretty convinced by now I'm not the only one feeling this way. :)

Hi Jarred.

This is my second post here, but hopefuly I won't be ignored (as I'm a newby here)

Just two questions the answers to which I don't seem to find here.

1. As far as I understand Scarlet s35 comes with PL mount. Considering the people who are looking at this brain, don't you think they are likely to use nikon or canon and never use PL. Is there a possibility to choose any mount and since electronic mount are more exmencive, just pay the difference? I am more than positive that I won't need a PL mount, so It'll just lay around covering with dust.

2. I can't seem to fully understand what the module adapters are for. Does that mean it's impossible to stick the modules straight onto the body? Do we
need the adapter for puting modules and why?

PS: Thanks for the time you spend here answering our questions. Thanks for the great equippment. I got so overexcited when I saw the renders of REDMOTE PRO I couldn't fall asleep till 4 in the morning. :) I hope to become one of your customers soon.

Hey Danill welcome to the family :)

We are still discussing mount options.. It seems like an easy solution to just provide whatever mount is wanted but there is a bit if a logistical issue to provide that sort of thing.. But we are discussing solutions.

The adapters are a critical structural element to the system, they provide the first latch point and reinforcement. We could of just made the brains all longer and built that in, but we felt it was much better to make the brain small as possible for those situations when you don't need rear modules.

so we're paying for a fancy user interface now? RED ppl. i think that's the last thing film makers really care about as cool as it looks

Maybe I'm not a film maker, but I for one very much care about how the screen looks like, as this is the single most important tool for me to judge the pictures I am taking.

And either way, you are still paying less for this "fancy" user interface, than you'd pay for a butt-ugly one from other manufacturers.

REDmote uses it's own wireless protocol i.e. "REDLink" This wireless link has significantly greater range than 802.11 WiFi
Will there also be a way to use it wired ?

Wireless is fantastic, but aren't there some places where that might be problematic ? Like in very crowded places with loads of interference and already existing wireless networks ? Or places where you're not allowed to use wireless stuff (hospitals,...)

When the Redmote is docked on the camera, does it still use wireless transmission, or does it connect directly to the camera ?

Well that was quick! Thanks Jarred.

Slightly off topic:
For the people who are afraid of the "Bomb" wording on the EVF. Let me ask you something: Why should you be afraid that they pull you out? You are not carrying a bomb are you? That you are afraid at all shows that the brainwash into a fear society has already worked out great. I am from East Germany - my parents had been under surveillance, people living next street up were at the Stasi spying on the neighborhood - fear was exactly what enabled them to do their thing - nobody dared to say anything.
I recommend reading "Little Brother" by Cory Doctorow (or listen to the audiobook if you have not enough time for a book) for a more modern take on this that actually includes exactly this - Homeland Security overdoing border and homeland searches and surveillance to instill fear on the public. Its a "kids" book but reading some comments here I can only think that everybody should have a read.
In the end it is a word on a piece of metal - why the f* would you be afraid of carrying around that? If they pull you out its a fault of the system and not of you. (false positive) - the aforementioned book gets into great philosophical detail of that - if you are of the opinion "searches are making me and the US safer" or some such - read the book I guarantee you will not have the same opinion afterwards.

so sounds like to me that if you have the redhandle and side Cf module there wouldnt be a need for the adapter. that adapter would pretty much be used for things like the rear CF module and battery Module, i'm guessiin I/O Module as well?

I'm a stills guy new to cinema and I notice awful wobble effects on these dslr cameras like the 5d when I am panning in vid mode. Is this specific to cmos-based cameras and if so how does your scarlet/epic system combat this or is it just the way these dslrs were made?

Thanks
Gabriel

Scarlet will have a faster sensor read out speed.

It's going to be better than RED One, that's already one of the best rolling shutter (the best?) for CMOS cameras on the market.

I know what wobbly effect Gabriel is talking about in VDSLrs....

And no, you don't need to worry, you don't get that even in consumer CMOS camcorders. Like Pietro said, its all about sensor read. Notice that VDSLRs are typically verly limited in frame rate... even more so than consumer camcorders. Remember, the video mode on VDSLRs is much like the video modes on your consumer still cameras... ya know, those flat pink ones your daughter carries in her purse... The difference is you've got a DSLR chip with higher resolution and more range, plus the DOF of that with the Lens.

Obviously, neither are Ideal replacements for camcorders, but i've used the cheapest VDSLR, the Nikon D5000, in combination with my prosumer camcorders on my wedding shoot with 3-1/3 ccd sensors. The dynamic range of the VDSLR is a lot nicer, not to mention sharp DOF. The downside is short recording time, waving effect, etc.

I can make the package lite enough without compromise on quality and put it on a steadicam flyer. Redremote pro to the assistant for focus pulling. It make pro shoots excesseble for the major of us.

I saw this documentary last.. about darwin..where he actually meant those abel to survive aren't necessary the strongest. but the ones who can adapt to new surcome stances!

Yeah, that's really blowing my mind - a smart wireless Follow Focus system. Incredible. And for solo shoots, you've got facial tracking for human subjects, and touchscreen tap-to-focus/tracking points for everything else. Viva la Steadicam Revolution :cornut:

This is borderline dubass request, but it would be cool to have a kind of "app store" for epic and scarlet. Imagine making -approved- small scripts or apps that run on camera, making a special feature. This could make the cameras get alooooot more useful features that if all must be coded by red people. And then you can just enable the features you need and turn off the rest saving process power in camera and saving battery.

Example apps:
-Anti theft GPS tracking app
-Live mode app, syn of mutiple cames, low res streaming, propagating settings, etc.
-MoCap data collector and app for integrating in to 3D scene/SFX
-"Default locked" cameras for rental, all cameras must have wifi (internet) and download a key to start, so solen cameras are completely useless.

..but if you don't want that, you can just not use the app ;)

Best

REDmote

REDmote

When the Redmote is docked on the camera, does it still use wireless transmission, or does it connect directly to the camera ?

Yes, when docked to the back of the camera (or module stack), it disables its wireless transmitter and becomes a direct communication device.

Will the Redmote and Redmote Pro be released around the same timeframe as the bomb evf? Well any modules for that matter?

All these anouncements are awesome, but I'm a bit lost on one point :

Given that the Scarlet now has so many high-end features that were initially only available on Epic, what are the differences between Epics and Scarlets now ?

There is a $21 000 price difference between a S35 Epic and a S35 Scarlet.

Are the higher frame rates and bitrates the only differences ?
120 fps at 3K on Scarlet (+ 150 fps burst), Redcode 100
160 fps at 3K on Epic, and 100 fps at 5K, Redcode 250 ?

Did I miss something ?

Quite agree with you Nils. A bit lost myself on the different specs. Scarlet S35, EpicX...
But agree again that's awsome...

storage

storage

there are some great storage possibilities for the Scarlet. I am trying to figure out what will be the best for shooting, and have a question. The red-drive looks great for storage, but does this require being plugged into a wall, or can it run off of the battery module?

also,
how much recording time can you get out of the 1.8" SSD module?

Thanks!

Just a few suggestions...

Just a few suggestions...

Hi Jim, Jarred, Red Team.

The entire Announcement is incredible.

Just a few suggestions:

Scarlet Interchangeable is a very powerful tool, it just need a 2/3 zoom to be perfect.
16mm zooms are too old to resolve 3K and match with red mini primes; or too expensive if they are good ones.

It would be perfect if we could buy the 2/3 zoom of the Scarlet Fixed and we can add it to the Scarlet Interchangeable for 1500/2000 dollars. Or maybe if you buy a Scarlet Fixed + a Scarlet Interchangeable you have a big discount.

And Standard PL mount should be very important if we want to rent more expensive lenses.

At the same time I think the 2.8" LCD of the Scarlet Fixed is going to be too little for real work. I would like to have an option of Scarlet Fixed with the 5" LCD instead of the 2.8" LCD.

Thanks for your hard work,

Juan

(Just want to be totally clear on this, since the 8X Fixed is a special beast at a special price, it's a little different from the rest of the DSMC system.)

The price on the 8X Fixed is so good (even with the increase) I just want to be sure of this point - all the included accessories are the same as the ones I'd buy if I was equipping an interchangeable lens model, right? No issues I'd have to deal with when I upgrade the body and lens?

Mini primes and Scarlet Fixed zoom questions

Mini primes and Scarlet Fixed zoom questions

Jim, Jarred, Red Team:

Just a few questions:

Are the red mini primes and Scarlet Fixed, ready to be used with cheap follow focus units like the redrock micro?
How much does the miniprimes breath? I would like to compare them with Zeiss ZF lenses to decide if I buy the Scarlet Interchangeable or the Scarlet S35.

Can you post some mini red primes and Scarlet fixed lens tests soon?

Thanks!

HDMI output on the brain is great. Will the full look around and UI functions be viewable over the HDMI output for third party monitors?
