I hate to be a killjoy, but I really think you should reconsider having the word BOMB on the Electronic View Finder. It is hard to tell from the photos, but if the lettering is actually embossed in the metal then it isn't just a visual problem but it might show up on an X-Ray image as well.

Wait till you see the "Semtex" batteries! And the "C4" SSD!

On the other hand, I had six Soviet aluminum cases covered in Cyrillic in my car while I was working on a film in 2006. Inside was a Kinor 35H system, but from the outside it looked like old Soviet military surplus. In fact, while flying into the country I was told by Customs on one occasion that the metal tripod tube is very similar to a tube used to pack Soviet RPGs. Anyway, I crossed over the Canadian border on my way to both Montreal and Vancouver and passed back into the states. During all four crossings my stop at the border took all of 30 seconds. Nobody ever asked me what the Soviet road cases were all about or if I was planning to blow up any government buildings or shoot any foreign nationals.

Of course, I tried to take a snapshot of the White House once through the bars in the fence and as soon as my lens went between the bars a guy in uniform took an aggressive posture and parked his nose about an inch from my right cheek. So it kinda depends on where you're trying to work. ;-)

Now that I've finally exhaled after the 30th announcement...

(translation: awesome. looking forward to it all!)

Has is been expressed what the effective wireless range is of the REDmote/REDmotePRO? I didn't see it in any of the posts from the inside team (at least not in this thread).

Hot. Hot. Hot.

Best,

Pierce

Yes you can use it on Epic to pull focus on Canon/Nikon Lenses.

The knob is aprox. 2.5" in diameter, there are some similar sized knobs on the market and it feels really good in your hand. The white ring is replaceable.

The Battery on the Redmote should last an entire day. When it is on the back of the camera it charges itself as well.

Thanks, that it is great news. Is there any special thread to be able to use the Redmote on the side or to attach it to the side of the camera via some manfroto clamps or any other device to put it on the rods? It would be great if it had some thread to put some red arms to it, like the LCD or View Finder.

I just went and took this photo specially just for you Olafur..

Now you can never say that I never did anything for you :)

Could you take a picture of the back of the EPIC ??? :aureola:

Focus Points

Focus Points

I try to read as many posts as possible but forgive me if this has been discussed...

Any idea how many focus points the various sensors will have?

I'm curious if the UI posted by Jarred is an accurate representation of focus points or if it's just an early concept...

I wonder if the LCD touch focus ability relys on the focus points or if your can touch anywhere.

Just some thoughts that I'd love answered (whenever RED decides its time)...

THANKS!!!!!

I'm very curious about the Ergonomics. I don't imagine that I'd be doing much handheld shooting with the Scarlet (aside from shoulder mount etc.), but since it does stills too...how do you hold it, exactly? I have to admit that the reason I'm a Nikon guy is primarily for the super-comfy grips ;)

Its actually very comfortable to hold, although it does not appear to be. Matt liked it as you can see.

Jeff,

I don't understand how output size plays any role in this discussion in terms of format size. (Not that I don't see people doing that and I do agree with you it confuses the issue), but the greater pixel density is like zooming into an image, but optically, so it will change the DoF of the image. They are NOT the same. To me this makes perfect mathematic sense because it's not just a crop factor, you are also changing how you are reading the lens output. (Comparing two images with the same pixel count at two different format sizes).

I think a lot of people help people understand it by saying take an image that has a small DOF that is VERY large and shrink it down. All of a sudden it is sharp everywhere. It's the same principle. You've caused the image to be more dense (artificially) and you will change the DoF in the image (perceptionally).

I don't see why there is so much confusion on this.

Correct, the only reference I can find in his report about HDMI is this -

"Now the biggest problem when shooting handheld with this combo was Armin had know way of seeing what I was shooting. Now this is the fatal flaw with shooting the 5dmkII and 7D. If you have to use a viewfinder and I find it helps immeasurably when handheld then you cannot use a monitor. Plug a monitor in and you lose the LCD. Now you can shoot handheld and mount the monitor onto the rig and use that, then you could use a powered HDMI splitter and use two monitors or just have the director behind you looking in yours. I needed the viewfinder so it meant Armin had to watch back clips after I shot them. This slowed things down and was far from ideal. We really need to be able to have that LCD working AND plug a monitor in."

So, just what has that Canon camera issue got to do with Scarlet?

Stuart,

My real concern is about HDMI.

We are finding even difficult to use HDMI output with RED One and one of my friend who is red one owner here in chennai (the only one who uses HDMI monitors for On-set monitoring) is moving to HD-SDI due to non-consistent signal failure over HDMI.

What you think about this?

Epic and Scarlet will have a much more universal implementation of HDMI than the RED ONE has :)

Nice, thanks! Which lens is that?

I guess my only two questions now are:

1. ISO? (even to know if it's an "TBA item")

2. Weight?

Most of my gear is tuned for 8 to 10 pounds or less (Steadicam, Tripod, etc.), so I'd like to know if I need to throw some more dough in the savings fund

I think his problems with HDMI probably have to do with cable length, and connectivity. As you probably know, HDMI starts to lose signal strength after just 10ft. It is also prone to just falling out, since the port is not a secured connection like HD-SDI on BNC... It's also not very easy to secure HDMI cables to prevent falling out of the port, whereas with BNC you can wrap it around a top handle to provide stress relief. I would much rather use HD-SDI vs HDMI for a fast moving shoot, especially hand held, for a feed to video village.

Good thing is that you can always purchase the I/O module.

That's one of the Red Pro Primes-- a 50mm? I believe.

The weight was in the neighborhood of 6 to 7 pounds-- lighter than we were expecting.

It's a beast :thumbup1:

My brain is still trying to compute (1) a wireless REDmote Pro with Follow Focus, and (2) touchscreen focus with facial tracking. My Steadicam is doing a jig as we speak...

You're meaning it will conform properly to HDMI protocols? Not just be DVI disguised with a HDMI socket?

It'd be nice if that output on the Epic and Scarlet could be used with DVI, and all HDMI monitors.

This all just makes the GUNNER a must purchase regardless of weight.

Hold your empty hand in front of you and up chest level for two minutes. It gets heavy and tired.

The gunner with finger tip controls and the RMPRO mounted next to an LCD is insanely simple and genius to thing about.

Imagine the back of the camera and the LCD of choice viewable at the same time... next to each other on an "arm"

now thats going to be one of dozens and dozens of killer configs.

Man, I hope we can get our buildout done quickly and land some of the big productions coming to town this Spring...

We are all going to need the extra revenue for all this awesome kit. Which I believe will pay for itself very quickly. over and over.

thanks for the 100th time for all the hard effin work. Now I see why you guys cant wait to get this in our hands.

BTW thats the coolest thing Jim said in his last thread.

I would suggest to you that's not likely to be an HDMI issue per se...

And also that there is a big advantage in the range of signals that HDMI can support compared to HD-SDI...

However there is certainly HD-SDI available in the Scarlet system.

It'd be nice if that output on the Epic and Scarlet could be used with DVI, and all HDMI monitors.

Well that is essentially what HDMI is - DVI on a different connector, plus optional content encryption and communications (which we don't enable)

regarding to modular system:
i think it will be useful to see in future some kind of REDCALCULATOR - to calculate a price and maybe discounts depending of selected modules. In that way everyone can construct its own camera based on fixed or nonfixed body!

an MS Excel spreadsheet works for us...:yesnod:

cheers!

REDLink?

REDLink?

Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else in this massive thread. But on line #24 (Remote camera control via 802.11 WiFi AND REDLink wireless interfaces), I would love some clarification. Just what exactly is REDLink? I can't find any other mention of it anywhere else. Am I just not seeing it?

Also, #7 (Remote camera control and recorded stills / movie transfer over Gigabit ethernet). Does Gigabit Ethernet have the bandwidth to send RGB 1080p footage live? "Movie transfer" doesn't sound quite up to the task. It would be great to reduce the number of cables running out of the back of this thing.

Will some kind of proprietary RED software be required to manage the cameras as network devices for control purposes? Not that I'm complaining, I love the RED software releases so far, I just don't know how this system is managed, or if this has been threshed out in another thread.

That is all.

REDmote uses it's own wireless protocol i.e. "REDLink" This wireless link has significantly greater range than 802.11 WiFi
