  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Oh no.

Is it difficult to add HD-SDI port?

The biggest hurdle / problem the Canons and Nikons facing is the monitoring system for directors.

Please check out the Philip bloom article here - http://philipbloom.co.uk/2009/11/29/shooting-short-drama-present-tense-on-the-canon-7d/

Red - Please hear the customers feedback. HDMI can never be used as a professional monitoring solution on set.

Can Red revert back with HD-SDI than HDMI.

What users think about this?

Like just about everything else with this camera, I'm sure you can just buy a module that will get you where you want to go.

With this modular and wireless enabled system I can foresee many possible future audio modules and innovations in that field to add to all the imaging ones you guys are making.

I figure you are not all so sexed up on audio gear and focused on imaging but hey as the audio guys like to say - in video and film Audio is 70% of what you see. To my mind ready synced on-board audio is an important part of the work-flow streamlining going on with digital cinema so the camera developer are the ones who can innovate further here and you guys at red are just so damn good at innovation I can't wait to see what you come up with.

A fully synced, meta-data embedded, expandable modular multichannel on-board audio recording system with wireless monitoring and control anybody?

(I'm no audio guy but I like my gear and take an interest in all fields - can't say if an audio guy would actually rate my ideas here)

Correct, for Scarlet with either the Base I/O Module or the Pro I/O Module you would get 2 x HD-SDI outputs...

(and in EPIC's case, as it has HD-SDI on the camera head as well as HDMI, that's a 2nd and 3rd HD-SDI output)

someone did post it, but I'll echo it.
Scarlet is beefed, I belong to a group of users not rental, which makes my Epic purchase less desirable.
I get the marketing and the need to revamp the "new comers"
The price point and feature set on scarlet, makes me more interested in FF35

I still want to be on top with my clients. I need them to know they get the best without the crossing the line:)

What's up with FF35?

and BTW
Jim; I'll be working on video for the Bombardier jets (customization).
Same you're flying and yes the client nows you well;)
I am in need to get some interviews..any chance for a chat in front of a camera?
Cheers

The lens info is saved in the R3D metadata.

Beautiful; you've thought of everything. So impressive, guys. Related to this: Will we be able to dial in specific focal lengths on the fly as well? For instance, will we have real-time feedback on lens data through e.g. the Redmote, so we can see what focal length we're using at any given time? Or is this only available in the R3D metadata after the fact?

(sorry to hijack this thread temporarily but I figure you guys from Red are reading this thread closely)

To further expand the modules I'm thinking of here for audio:

It has been stated before that 4 channels simultaneous recording is the max for the cameras at present. There can be many situations where a sound recordist would want to record more than 4 discreet channels of audio. If he does this on a separate device then he would need to cable up and sync to timecode if he wants to make syncing in post easier. (like I say, I'm not a sound guy so feel free to correct me on this)

Might it not be nicer to be able to record these extra channels in camera and have them transfer in perfect sync together with the video files?

So what I suggest is something like this:

  • Two separate styles of audio module
  • One that has on board recording to CF media and acts as a master unit for the others
  • the second provides 4 full size XLR inputs plus any other appropriate connectors, has high quality on board pre-amps, Compressor limiters and DACs for the inputs.
  • The Master unit can have any number of these input units attached up to a certain limit and will record the audio input from them onto it's media, taking metadata and rec/stop controls from the camera brain and any DSMC controller system like the Redmote
  • The audio recording module could also accept redvolt batteries or a battery module to enable the sound recordist to use it independently if desired
  • When working as a separate unit a redmote can be attached passing all camera data and controls to the unit wirelessly

Combine this with the Redmote audio monitoring and control surface capabilities mentioned earlier and we would have something very interesting - if it is at all technically possible.

The main factors that I can see preventing this from working might be data rates, reliability and latency in the wifi connection. I don't know enough about these to know if it could be done or not.
me = :confused1: , :conehead: = needed

Once again sorry for hijacking with my probably crazy ideas...

Would be nice to see that 4 input audio module anyway if it could be done significantly cheaper than the base IO and Pro IO modules for those that just want 4 full size XLR inputs.
i.e. if this gets developed this module could fulfill this often mentioned module gap too. (others have been requesting a simple, cheaper audio IO module)

"Waaah... the price went up!"

So many cry babies here. The same day the federal minimum wage went up all the food at my local Safeway went up 20-25%. Chips that were $1.50 went up to $2. My G2 drinks went from $4.99 to $5.99. That is life people... things are subject to change. RED may have raised the prices but you still get more stuff/bang for that money in the long run. For all those bitching about the fixed price how the heck are you going to edit the footage? I plan to get a new Mac just for RED footage as my current 3 macs are not intel based, and to save a little money I'll buy a used or refurb one as the models out right now I'll be able to get 20-25% off in 6 months anyway. Walmart sells digital camcorders for as low as $29 if your too poor to get a Scarlet system they can fix you up with something more affordable lol. I'm not a rich man. Yesterday I was broke. I have a $6,000 check coming in the mail so I could get a Scarlet this week or I could get a 1000 DVDs made from one of my movies and sell them on Amazon and still have $5,000 left over. I'm not going to waste my 6 or 7 months complaining. I'm going to work with what I have for now. I'll make another movie on HDV to kill the time and who knows I may sell enough DVDs to get something better than the fixed from RED. I'm just happy to be able to have something as nice as the RED cameras to dream about. As one of the "older" guys here 6 months will fly by like 6 weeks to me. I can't believe it's almost Christmas again already : ) ...A tip to the other broke filmmakers, I have a neighbor who goes out each night collecting cans from the trash and he makes about $100 a day so there are many ways to get money even if you are out of a job and don't mind getting a little dirty. Times are tough and as a freelancer my income is in flux month to month but if needed I'd go out and collect some cans if I had too. I'd rather be out shooting with a Scarlet but I still have plenty of life left in my current gear and cameras. If you really, really, really want a Scarlet get out there and work any job for it. Do car washes, shovel snow, mow lawns, sell your Blood (or that other body fluid). If you can save $25 a day you'll save up enough cash to live your dream. Also if your out buying $25 Blurays and $50 video games every Tuesday and going out to clubs and movies you only have yourself to blame as that money spent on fun could of bought the camera you all claim you can not afford (This advice is coming from someone who used to buy 3 or 4 laserdisc a week at anywhere from $40-$250 a pop so I could of had a RED one if I had banked that money I spent just on laser movies). REDBOX rents movies for $1, put the other $24+ you'll save in the bank. Now stop bitchin' and start saving! End of rant.

Not that it has anything to do with how the camera works, but I've personally always liked the black chrome LEMO connectors. Back when I was making a lot of cables with LEMOs, I thought the black chrome looked so cool. However, as I recall they cost more and they were always on backorder.

Is RED using the contact bodies with crimped pins and sockets or the solder cup style? Just curious. Good choice on LEMO though. I think they have several design advantages over Fischer.

so we're paying for a fancy user interface now? RED ppl. i think that's the last thing film makers really care about as cool as it looks

Nope. You are paying for (in case of Scarlet):

- 3K RAW Digital Cinema Camera
- 120/150 FPS variable speed
- 2/3" sensor
- kick-ass lens

That alone is worth 10x more if You look at any other cameras that don't even come close to this specs...

The fancy UI (and all the other features and functionality) is thrown in cherry on the big fat cake...

 Peter

Ken I don't think people are complaining so much as just voicing their dissapointment about the facts of life... they can't afford it.

I say the same thing about a lot of things. "Wow that Condo is beautiful and a great deal. Can't afford it."

We all have budgets. If they raised the price of the FF35 by 100% it would still be a great deal... but unaffordable for me and I too would voice my frustration as I placed an order for a S35. :) There is no downgrading from the 8x fixed. You either can afford it or you're not buying a RED product.

still waiting on that RED-LEGO app! pretty please

Actually, I'd really like to see something like that! Not an App but a feature on the RED home page. A 3D-virtual-build your own camera flash interface to attach things to your brain for configuration, and watch as the price increases as you add things. When your done you can press "Add to Cart" and check out. It would actually help people figure what exactly they need to buy for a working ideal set-up they want (there are so many things to choose from). :yesnod:

Mini Primes

Mini Primes

Any idea if they're all going to have the same size filter mount and what size that might be?

Bomb + Airplane = Not Good

Bomb + Airplane = Not Good

I hate to be a killjoy, but I really think you should reconsider having the word BOMB on the Electronic View Finder. It is hard to tell from the photos, but if the lettering is actually embossed in the metal then it isn't just a visual problem but it might show up on an X-Ray image as well. It isn't just airports either, courthouses, museums, and even some schools have security screening these days. All places where these cameras are going to be used.

Other than that the cameras and accessories are really looking great. Every new announcement they just keep getting better.

I think one of the joys of life for these guys is producing something that's aesthetically interesting as well as functional. Seeing the price points they're hitting, I don't think anyone's going to complain about a user interface that looks too pretty!

The new price is pretty awesome since I was expecting (and you can look this up in my earlier posts) an original out the door price of about $4,500 and a price increase to about $5,000. They beat my estimate by $250.

The $3,000 price some have mentioned was always for the brain only and my estimate of $1,500 for needed accessories seemed pretty much in line. So not only did they hit an excellent price point, they made me feel good about estimating correctly :-).
