  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

November 30th Announcement Feedback

OK thanks. I read his posts, but was not sure if he meant the full size PL was standard, or the mini PL was standard on the 2/3" cinema. I guess it's mini, drat.

I edited my post, adding that I meant 3rd party dumb mounts for other lens mounts.

I wouldn't be surprised if RED let you pick either full or mini PL mounts for the 2/3" Cinema as the standard option. They are offering both at no extra cost so it would make sense.

RED RAY Pro

RED RAY Pro

I know you guys are working on new spec sheets, no small task since your cameras are progressing as fast as they are, but try to explain some of the thinking behind a pro RED RAY.
Relative costs versus RED RAY consumer?
Applications where RED Ray consumer wouldn't cut it that Pro would?
Display options?
What kind of bit-rates would that new delivery format demand for 4K?
And anything else you'd like to spill..

I really can't tell you how excited I am to get my first scarlet, keep pushing the envelope, keep destroying boundaries.

I love companies that are a "scam"

Yes there will be a standard PL mount for Scarlet 2/3rds removable so you can use 35mm and 16mm glass. This is how I shot The Time Tank Revisited with the Scarlet 2/3" Prototype and RED PRO 85mm PRIME remember :)

PL mount is standard on S35 EPIC and S35 SCARLET cameras.

Mini-PL standard on 2/3 Removable.

Updated for correct quotes.

Space and connector reliability - EtherCon is a great system used widely but the shell is much larger.

I'm pretty sure that is not EtherCon. First, it is way too small; EtherCon is similar in size to full-size XLR. Second, the circular pin structure in the photo Jarred took is inconsistent with EtherCon. EtherCon is essentially an RJ45 with a big metal shell around it so the pin structure would still be linear inside. See the photos below for comparison.

I'm not sure what it is, but the port is very small.

Lens is F2.4, T2.6. (And Incredible)
/QUOTE]

Jarred, do you mean that the maximum aperture changes from 2.4 to 2.6 as you zoom?

no, lens maximum aperture is usually discussed in either 2 flavors, F-Stop or T-Stop. F-Stop is used in the Photo world, T-Stop in the Film world.

T Stops are actual transmission through the lens, and are a bit more accurate than F stops, and will likely always be larger of a number than F stops.

Yes and yes.

Jim

Hey Jim,

Good to see you managed to escape the basement. I was beginning to wonder what had happened to you down there. Did you get locked in?

Oh and by the way. Extreme kudos to you Jim and all the guys on the progress so far..

The problem with Beryllium is that it's highly toxic, in fact it is worse than lead. And machining it is also a very contaminating, toxic and environmentally hazardous process. It is a hard metal that tends to produce fine dust, known to cause lung cancer and another disorder called Berylliosis (imagine that); which affects both the respiratory and central nervous system. ...I used to work at a nuclear weapons facility, learned a lot about beryllium. And cursed its name all year round as we froze to death in the winter and roasted in the summer as all the ventilation systems were contaminated with beryllium dust and therefore sealed up. No air circulation for heating or cooling allowed....

So back in the day, original mag rims were the hottest things to want for my 1969 Saab 96. They weren't that easy to find, partly because magnesium has a tendency to burst into flame. I imagine the temperature-related stress tests currently underway at Red are figuring out just how far metallurgy has come since then...
:emote_popcorn:

P.S. Red, you keep making me happier all the time. Thanks!

So from left to right that is -

Headphones. HDMI. RS422. Sync (Video and Shutter). Gigabit Ethernet. D.C Power in.

Oh no.

Is it difficult to add HD-SDI port?

The biggest hurdle / problem the Canons and Nikons facing is the monitoring system for directors.

Please check out the Philip bloom article here - http://philipbloom.co.uk/2009/11/29/shooting-short-drama-present-tense-on-the-canon-7d/

Red - Please hear the customers feedback. HDMI can never be used as a professional monitoring solution on set.

Can Red revert back with HD-SDI than HDMI.

What users think about this?

Can't wait to hear about all those options for everybody. Care to share any kind of announcement dates for those? Would the next while be the rest of this month or are we looking a little further off?

I'm pretty sure you can get HD-SDI on both the Base and Pro I/O modules. Just click it to the back of the body (with adapter.)

Will you make C-mount for Scarlet?

I thought there was going to be footage.... where the footage at yo? :ack2:

To re-iterate some earlier unanswered posts, I was just wondering if you can tell us anything about the recording format for the scaled 1080 recording capability.

Seeing as it has been scaled it can no longer be RAW camera data right?

So it must be something other than RED RAW.

Somebody mentioned REDcodeRGB earlier. Can you comment on that?

What are the implications with workflow with the format it uses? Can you edit it at fullres realtime in FCP on a mac book pro without any hardware acceleration (i.e. realtime without getting into RedRocket territory) - This would make all the difference for some markets.

Ask people who are struggling with Canon 5D mark II / 7D / 1D mark IV.

The reason being it loses the display often and limitation of cable / monitoring for director are cumbersome?

If you have friend who shoot with above canon cameras ask them or read the philip bloom article I mentioned in my post!

read the philip bloom article I mentioned in my post!

Unless I'm mistaken, the only time Philip mentions the HDMI output, he's referring to the fact that the 5D and 7D don't have the capability to provide video to both the LCD screen and an external monitor at the same time. I don't see how that's relevant here.

Can the Redmote monitor audio ?

I thought I saw a headphone socket on it but can't see it in the recent renders/pics - perhaps it's out of view?

If no headphone jack for streaming audio for your sound guy to monitor wirelessly then at least a PPM display?

It does have a USB port on it right?

So perhaps you could plug in a control surface and have some extra fun!
I'm thinking multichannel audio control here (with the audio guy monitoring and controlling wirelessly if the lag is low enough) but there could be many other possibilities which relate to photographic controls.

Seems like this would be quite innovative on the audio front and you guys can't resist innovating right?

Using HDMI as a monitor port...

Correct, the only reference I can find in his report about HDMI is this -

"Now the biggest problem when shooting handheld with this combo was Armin had know way of seeing what I was shooting. Now this is the fatal flaw with shooting the 5dmkII and 7D. If you have to use a viewfinder and I find it helps immeasurably when handheld then you cannot use a monitor. Plug a monitor in and you lose the LCD. Now you can shoot handheld and mount the monitor onto the rig and use that, then you could use a powered HDMI splitter and use two monitors or just have the director behind you looking in yours. I needed the viewfinder so it meant Armin had to watch back clips after I shot them. This slowed things down and was far from ideal. We really need to be able to have that LCD working AND plug a monitor in."

So, just what has that Canon camera issue got to do with Scarlet?
